JM Fabrications
www.jmfabrications.com
Anyone know anything about this company and it's products? He has what, to me, appears to be a decent smim for a very decent price. It does have a tappered plenum, as well as velocity stacks. What about venuri designed into the runners? It doesn't say anything about that, so I'm guessing it doesn't have that. I am no expert when it comes to this so it'd be nice to hear what everyone else has to say about this. |
Re: JM Fabrications
Browsed the whole site; products look decent however I have never heard of them. And the $450 price for the intake manifold isn't all that great without a proven name if you ask me. I like there roll cages though, I didn't see a price on them but the welds look good and the fitment looks good as well.
I don't know what to think about the water to air intercooler project. Good idea, but looks to be a lot of work with the cutting and re-welding of the passenger side fender well. CRAIG |
Re: JM Fabrications
That design actually looks pretty solid. It is pretty similar to the ones I might be making. I have come up with a pretty cool design, but I haven't gotten prices yet. I hope to be in the $400 - $450 range.

Re: JM Fabrications
Jim's products are growing in popularity quite quickly. From what I remember, his name and products have really started showing up around different boards within about the last 6 months. I have yet to read a review of his products that is anything but 100% positive. I've seen pictures of his heat shield on a few different rides and it looks great. With the price of the Magnus increasing, the weld-blowing problems of the Venom, and the number of people downplaying the Forrester (SLS for one), I can definitely see why his popularity is growing.

Re: JM Fabrications
Yeah Jet and I were just talking about them. I think that developing a intake manifold is kinda like re-inventing the wheel. Yeah you might have a cool design and a good look. But when it comes right down to it, people are going to 1) buy one that is proven that costs alot of money or 2) buy one thats cheaper but probably does close to the same thing. But if you are planning to develope and intake manifold, something cheap, durable, and a good price is the way to get a name for yourself.

Re: JM Fabrications
Ya I've just read about their intake mani's. People seem to be saying they like them, but really no numbers or anything. Just hear-say which doesn't amount to that much. But I guess to me it still looked fairly decent. I'm going to be in the market for an intake manifold and am just trying to see all my options. The Magnus seems to really be one of the top performers from all my reading i've been doing. But 700 bucks, that's a lot of money and a semi-large investment in my books. Not trying to cheap out, just see all my options before dishing out that money. If the others out there quality just doesn't compare, then I will just have to dish out the money. But I'd like to cover all angles first, and this manifold caught my eye. I'd still like to see if QPR ever comes out with their design. And what kinda price range that'd be in. *cough* MIKE *cough* j/k man!!!
|
Re: JM Fabrications
QPR has a design for an intake manifold. Its on a car in our driveway. Unless Mike has came up with something else since then which I am sure he did.

Re: JM Fabrications
oh really. I guess I didn't know. I just go by their website and they don't have anything in the Intake Manifold link. So I figured it wasn't out yet. Is there any info you can provide on that one by chance? pics? impressions of it?
Oh I just found this!! Guy is making his own . I'll just follow his writeup, im sure it'll be a solid design for sure!! http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167966 |
Re: JM Fabrications
I do have a different design, just need to find a little time to get to making the new ones. All the parts are in hand, new tooling in place etc, just nine motors, 4 O2 housings, several heads and a few cars holding it off. Maybe in a week or two I can get to it again.

The website is pretty gay, i need to do a new one. The manifold on tuners is just lovely, looks like something tom would build. If tom could weld or do anything productive that is. |
Re: JM Fabrications
Ya I noticed a lot of the links on the site don't have anything. Just too swamped with things I'm guessing. But please if you have any info or pics or price range on your manifolds, please share. Also can someone fully explain the "venturi" design? Is it just the kinda of rounded trumpet lookin ends on the velocity stacks? Or do the runners shrink and open back up 3 inches into the runner or what? I hope that made sense. I'm under the impression the purpose of it is to speed up the air against the walls, so that air isn't moving that much slower on the walls then the air in the middle. Is that about right? But the design on how they do it on these manifolds is what I'm kinda not crystal clear on.

I wouldn't get too excited about that guy. There have been probably 5-10 serious people in the past couple years on Tooners who were all about building there own manifold. There was even one guy who claimed to have been working with some local engineering firm and had consistent access to a dyno to refine his design. As far as I've ever seen, none of the manifolds ever amounted to anything, including Mr. Engineer & Dyno. |
Re: JM Fabrications
Ya I was joking about that guys design on tooners. I am all about fabricating things like my own fmic piping, intake pipe, things like that. But when it come to things like intake manifolds, I think I'll leave that to the pro's because that's just a whole different level of fabrication in my eyes.

Re: JM Fabrications
AMS is working on some awesome designs. And they are probably the only people out their actually testing their designs on a dyno. Personally, I think you could do just about anything with a decent sized plenum and short runners and get a good power gain, the stock intake manifolds are so anti-topend power that just about anything works. Look at my pos old school Magnus, it is held together with silicone couplers and the runners don't even line up with each other. With it on my 2.0l, my power didn't start to drop until 8300RPMs, compared to 6500-7000RPMs on a stock intake, and it has made 660whp so far on my 2.4l. To get something special enough to blow away a basic design would take a lot of work and testing in a controlled environment on a dyno.

Re: JM Fabrications
So general consensus would be that this JM guys manifold seems like it would work alright then? Thanx for everyones feedback. I'm going to keep a lot closer eye on it, because it would be nice to see someone post up some numbers on it sometime. I'm not getting one tomorrow or anything, but will be in the market for one after I first get a few other small things, like another rear camber kit because taboo ran off with my money.

Re: JM Fabrications
ya, look on Vendors-Reviewed.com He is supposed to be back and getting everything caught up, but he still won't answer any of my recent emails regarding my order placed in August. My address has changed since I placed the order so he he would prolly ship it to the wrong address now. I try to inform him of changes, but he won't write me back at all. My worst vendor experience EVER. But ya, how bout them intake mani's!!

Re: JM Fabrications
If you wait a bit I should have an intake manifold on the market in 2 months or so. I am buying a TIG with my tax return and I have access to a couple of machine shops for the press bends and CNC'd flanges. My design is similar to a BJ's, but with a few changes.
|
Re: JM Fabrications
Ya like I said, I'm keeping my options pretty open for now. Trying to look at everything there is. It'd be after I got home from Japan when I'd be looking at this. So maybe you'll have a design by then that I can see. When I get is pretty much dependant on the kind of job I get once I'm home and out of the Marines. But I'll keep you in mind, just like I am everyone else!

Re: JM Fabrications
Everything seems to be going up. Mangus 2g manifold are now $715.00. I think that's crazy high but if people are paying it, then why wouldn't you raise your price. Just like ebay raised their prices, because they can.
Like other people on here, i'm also making one. We actually have a CNC machine but i'm gonna buy the first flange so i don't have to put a ton of hours into R&D. I found a place that sells flanges very reasonable. Then i can write a CAD program to CNC the flanges. Everything will be machined in-house to keep the cost down. I'm not gonna spend a ton of hours designing and testing my work though trying to make a new design. I'm just reverse engineering a very popular well known SMIM. I copied all the specs from a guy that has the original. I figure all i have to do is change a thing or two and, "It's mine". Once i get the flange from the guy, i'll be on my way. I'd be willing to sell these but it won't be anywhere near the $700 range. |
Re: JM Fabrications
I had the same old school Magnus intake as Shane. Although i never rev'd mine past 8k it was still making power there. The magnus aslo has such a nice broad torque curve as well, just flat and solid, not peaky like other.
I still think the FRH intake SUCKS!! From the 2 vehicles we have tested it on, its a very peaky intake and refuses to make hp or trq on the top end. On 2 vehicles we tested both on SC61's one w/ 272/272 and a Magnus the other w/ 264/264 and FRH there was a 115whp difference. Both on the same boost levels and both on stock motors/heads. Both vehicles we're dyno'd w/in 2 hours of each other as well in our own shop tuned by us. You tell me!! If anyones looking for a Magnus before the price increase sets in on my next order i have 2 left. Nick SLS |

Sorry to bring an old thread back from the dead, but I just did my first transaction with this place. I didn't get an intake manifold from them yet, just got a heatshield to cover my old ugly 2g manifold. Transaction went smooth as possible, and the packaged even arrived a day early, packaging was top notch. As always with polished items, this picture doesn't do it justice at all. The thing is awesome, and the metal is actually much thicker then I was expecting. I was expecting some thin cheap sheet metal, but this stuff is thick and sturdy. Depending on what all happens over the winter, I may be in the market for an intake manifold still, and after seeing how much time and effort was put into this simple heatshield, I will definately be keeping an eye on this intake mani. There are a couple others I'm still looking into, but after seeing this piece, I feel plenty comfortable going with this guys manifold!

That looks really nice :D

Nice!

Re: JM Fabrications
nice heatshield, but not one of his roll cages appear legal.

Re: JM Fabrications
I like his stuff. I'd get his intake manifold when the time comes. Looks simple, it's cheap and is quality.

Re: JM Fabrications
I may be way off base here, but looking at the intake manifold he has on the site for the 1g, I noticed the runners protrude about a 1/4" into the plenum. This may be ignorance, but wouldn't that disrupt airflow? Especially at higher RPM's. Please correct me if I'm wrong. It just seems that you would want something smoother, wouldn't you? It looks like it would trap some amount of air going in causing turbulance in the air that does make it down the runners.
Obviously I am not the smartest when it come to manifolds, that's why I'm asking this. To see what the experts think. |
Re: JM Fabrications
The answer is yes and no. Normally a runner like that should be flush on bottom of the plenum. He did his like the runners that have a radius around the opening, unlike the flat lip his have. It actually helps with the rounded lip, but I doubt it does on his.
