Re: Oiled down the track tonight.

Exploded the oil filter.

2nd pass of the evening, just as I let out of the accelerator in the traps it let go. Needless to say my testicles jumped straight up into my throat. Nothing like having a big ol' cloud of oil and smoke at the end of the run paired with the oil pressure warning coming on. The whole left side of my car was dripping with fresh Mobil1, tires and wheels, door, rear quarter, rear bumper, etc. It pumped out 5 qts in less than 5 seconds at 120+ mph. I shut it off as quick as I could. I had to leave the track to go and get another filter and oil. Filled it back up and the engine is doing fine. Lucky for me the run was over when it happened.

Unfortunately I didn't get another run in. Had to get an A/C Delco filter and standard Valvoline to fill it back up. I'll get another Mitsu filter Monday and put Mobil1 back in it.

Anyway, 2nd pass was the best so far.

11.86 @ 122.1 mph. Slow 1.97 60 ft on the pass.

Still doing some tuning and would have done more tonight, but,..............

I didn't have access to a Mitsu filter when I changed the oil last night, so I went with the Mobil1 oil filter. I thought it would be a good choice since it was bigger to support more filter media and is supposed to filter really well. I ran them on my 2.0L all the time with no failures. Maybe it was a bad one.

My buddy blew the filter housing apart on his 2g right in front of me one time. Its a pretty crazzy thing to watch. good to hear the motors alright his wasn't so lucky after the second time it happened.

Re: Oiled down the track tonight.

You are lucky. I blew the gasket out between the oil cooler and the piece the pressure senders in. I didn't catch it untill it started making noise. Not one piece made it throuogh alive (head, bottom, turbo).

Re: Oiled down the track tonight.

After 2 hrs worth of degreasing my car, I took another look at it. It looks like the o-ring seal pushed it's way out of the sealing groove. I had hand tightened it really tight, but it looks like not enough. I think the pressure caused to oil filter to push away from the sealing surface which allowed the o-ring to come out of place.

Well at least I get to keep going and don't have to tear the engine down. :D

I doubt it, theres no pot to stir. No DSMer will ever keep his balance shaft (given the chance to remove it) because the oil pressure *might* blow off the oil filter.

lol I have a removal kit and I've never seen or heard of that being a cause to oil filters exploding....

Exactly, that is why you should port the relief hole a bit to try to get the oil pressure down. I lost my original motor from losing all the oil at 100+mph. Good to hear that everything seems okay with his motor though. Maybe time to pull off the oil filter housing and do a little porting, if that already hasn't been done and hoseclamp/wire the filter the so that it can't move at all.

Re: Oiled down the track tonight.

I wouldn't really say the car is giving me headaches, just issues to fix as they pop up. You've got to remember everthying is new (engine, trans, clutch, ign, fuel, etc.) and these little problems will need to be fixed. All in all, I think it's going really well. The mph of my last pass shows I'm on the right track with the car. I can see the need for the bigger turbo to free up the exhaust pressure. So it's next on my "to do" list.

Re: Oiled down the track tonight.

Just be happy the oil down didn't cost you. In the big leagues(NHRA), they can get pretty costly. :-)
