What's the dumbest thing you have done with your car?

Bought something you wish you wouldn't have?

For me it's a toss up between the Scorchers on the GST
- On my old silver 97 GST I have those BF Tire with the red tread in them.

&

The Altezzas on the GSX.
- On my old 95 GSX I happen to have some sweet tail lights with me at Hills house while he was installing a FMIC and some other goodies for me. I did the unthinkable and put them on right there in his garage.

MustGoFaster 12-06-2004 11:14 PM

Put N2O on it, it just feels slow with out it.

HondaKiller 12-06-2004 11:16 PM

Paid money for it.

1ViciousGSX 12-06-2004 11:21 PM

Allowed a stud to fall into my first new engine.

Matt D. 12-06-2004 11:25 PM

Bought a DSM thinking it would be a summer project.

A//// Guy 12-06-2004 11:31 PM

I think the amount of money over the last 4 years has gone too far for me. Compared to a newer car, I dont think I could get something as fun or as nice. But after the amount of work and money Ive put into it, it would be nice to just have a reliable car that isnt so tempting to throw money at.

I dont think that is possible though... any car I will own will prolly get a stereo, and other mods...

I really love dsm's though. Havent driven mine in almost 5 months and its killing me. In a week or 2 Ill drive to storage but then I will have to wait 4 more months...

I also should have waited and not done the UICP, LICP, and other mods that got dumped within a year.. as they were just a waste of money. Also 2.5" exhaust was a mistake...

SuperSleeper 12-06-2004 11:35 PM

I bought ropelights for my Buick back in the day. That was pretty ghey.

jdr_fatbob 12-06-2004 11:47 PM

put about a grand into my ol mazda only to have the clutch go out and have it worth 50 bucks

At-Least-It's-An-Evo 12-06-2004 11:48 PM

Tried to fix something, then made it worse and spent twice as much time and money trying to make it perfect.

Raptor 12-06-2004 11:57 PM

When I was 17 I repaired the wiring under the dash of my 69 chevelle with an extension cord. In my defense, I knew it was ghetto, but had no other option to get the car running that particular weekend and the girlfriend who lived 50 miles away was all reved up and needing some attention, what else could I do ? I certainly couldn't let the poor girl go without right? I fixed it right about a month later after stupid little electrical issues kept happening and eventually ended up with a grey cloud of toxic smoke emanating from under the dash.

niterydr 12-06-2004 11:57 PM

I modded my grand am :(.

Raptor 12-07-2004 12:00 AM

Yep, thats gay! Almost as bad as the scorchers and not quite as bad as modding the tempo.

Khadgar 12-07-2004 12:03 AM

I wish I had never done freemods and started this madness.

JDM 12-07-2004 12:12 AM

Bought it, Rallied it through Ryan's corn field, or entered the burnout contest at Elite Autosport.

I'm on my 3rd Tranny, My 5th Clutch (In my defense, I'm counting clutches with the trannies, which would make 3 Flywheels), the thing has 67k miles, I've replaced EVERYTHING on that car, and it's only a 2003.

Sign me up for the Darwin Awards.

Holy crap, Mike had a girlfriend.

More than you could imagine little man, and I didn't have to pay for mine ;)

Poly motor-mounts and ridiculous stiff springs. I guess these things aren't that dumb...but I really should have kept the term "daily driver" more in my mind while modding.

dylan 12-07-2004 01:08 AM

Best times in the car were also my most destructive times. Ramming garbage cans / recycle bins, and going off this jump in the middle of an elementary school field.

Goat Blower 12-07-2004 01:19 AM

The brakes on my Monza Spyder that I had in high school were squeaking, so I put some grease on the shoes and put it back together. The squeaking went away and it actually still stopped. I got a lot of flack for that the next year when I became a mechanic.

Wizard50369 12-07-2004 04:21 AM

Forgot to tighten the right axel nut and wondered what that grinding noise was. Drifted around a few corners only to make the noises worse... than i noticed i didnt have an axel nut anymore. In my defense I just got it running and was anxious to take it out.

tpunx99GSX 12-07-2004 04:33 AM

Lowered it with coilovers, then when one of my shocks broke i took a 3 in metal pipe and slid it around the strut to hold the spring holder up.... umm its still holding strong, but hey it saved me some money.

TheBlizzard 12-07-2004 04:39 AM

The worst thing I ever did was buy my first DSM. Its been downhill ever since. Money, money, and more money.

CRAIG

jd1828 12-07-2004 10:43 AM

drifting it into a curb doing 20mph.

dsm95gsxer 12-07-2004 10:55 AM

Buying my heavy ass 18 inch motegi mr7s and putting yellow scorchers on the wheels. They where for my Grand Am, it was tight. Talk about a waste of $1200

Kougar 12-07-2004 11:10 AM

Either putting my own clutch in only to end up dropping the tranny 4 times in a row and wasting 8 months of downtime.

-or-

Driving about 6 miles to work on a flat tire in my beater.

TalonFiero 12-07-2004 11:17 AM

I made a cardboard gasket from a ceral box for the oil fill cap on my '77 T-bird. Had a bit of an oil fire under the hood. Luckily I was able to put it out.

I also rebuilt the "iron duke" in my first 84 SE Fiero. That was a big waste of money, I even put a header on it. :(

bought a fwd dsm and inwasted (invested and wasted) more than i should have in it..

deciding to mod my car even more after it broke

SlowWhite 12-07-2004 12:00 PM

Run from the police 4 times... I'm kidding....Really I am!

ABV 12-07-2004 12:10 PM

The worst thing I ever did was sell my '87 Toyota pickup. I had two "beaters" (the pickup, and a '92 tsi awd) and a '98 GSX at the time. I wanted to get rid of one of my winter cars, so I kept the Talon, and sold the Yota. I still regret doing that. If I had kept the truck I would still be driving it today, but the Talon lasted me for about another 6-7 months before I had enough and parted it out.

Jana 12-07-2004 12:10 PM

The dumbest thing I did with my GSX, was to buy suspension for the car, never use it, and end up losing money on it. :(

JDM 12-07-2004 01:27 PM

I still think I win this contest. I've probably spent well over $35k in my car by now. Stupid me.

scheides 12-07-2004 02:37 PM

I used to drive a 1983 vw gti (1st year in the usa, baby!), and had been working all summer as a mountain bike guide in new york (state). When I got home, I was pretty amped to be driving my car again, and was out on a gravel road with some friends in the car.

I was telling stories about NY as we came down a hill to a 'T' in the road, where we'd take a left onto a tar road. I decided to e-brake onto the tarmac and....well....after looking for oncoming traffic, slid sideways in the most pefect drift you've seen, straight across the road and off the other side, down the steep, steep ditch. I stayed on the gas, we landed upright, kept up momentum and somehow I drove the thing out of the ditch, without a problem, or even a studder!

My friends were completely sighlent, and it wasn't until after we got back on the road, and I finished my story that we erupted in laughter at what had happened. Seriously, we were going probably 45-50mph, and at the speed and angle we left the other side of the tarmac we should have rolled the thing.

Backed up into a huge rock @ Super America!

1slowdsm 12-07-2004 04:39 PM

Let RS Motors touch my car! Clutch job=$600 for labor + over $350 for ACT 2100 clutch (which they called Stage II). I dont even know if they resurfaced my flywheel or not.
Fried my clutch at RF last spring and wasting too much money on crap parts...like Punishment Racings 2.5" Pressbent DP. Cheap in price and quality..haha.

I backed up into those concrete blocks that hold up light poles in parking lots...haha.

A//// Guy 12-07-2004 04:41 PM

Punishment racing BAHAHAHA you owned yourself there. Extreme quality!

hey, that was the first performance upgrade I bought for my car and I didnt want to spend too much and regret not spending enough. Oh I also let Dave's Exhaust shop do my exhaust and that was just as much of a waste of money as the cheap DP. I got a 2.25" custom catback...Oh yeah! LOL
