What Do I do!??!!?!? (about selling the car)

Ok... so today I was referred to a buyer who was interested in buying a highly modd'd 1g. He wants my car and supposedly has CASH in hand and would meet this week! I gave him the specs of the car, pics, and the info needed. He is deadset on purchasing the car depending on how I want to work it out. Sounds like he is willing to pay at least $9.5k for it the way it sits. He wasn't so impressed with the mph trap with what the whp figures were. I told him it was lacking a fuel system and that I could do that for him for more money. He is probably going to have me do that and try to make more power with it. The ONLY problem is... I DON'T know if I really really really want to sell it. :( I know if I try to do more with it, it might cost me alot of money as we know these are all money pits. What do I do..???!?!?! Sell it ....?????? Some relevent information. I spent 10 months putting this car together, spent about $11.5-12k total + probably $1k in misc things. What I spent is about 80% of what the parts were worth so in reality, it'd be like $15-16k for a person building it from scratch. I knew going into this that I won't get as much as I put into it, but I don't really care, because this is a pretty damn good % of what I put into it. I'm somewhat happy with the car but I feel I really should move on and do what I really want to do and stop messing with cars. I don't know what's best for me, keeping it or selling it. Either way, it's gonna be tough as hell, advice? He's emailed me 3 times asking a bunch more questions about selling it....!?!?!?!?!

Wow, I'd say it would be good to enjoy it a while before selling it, but you will have to put a lot more into it to maintain it as things will break. I don't think anyone can make the decision for you.

stikx 11-11-2004 12:40 AM

i say sell it to him...its always fun building cars and in that sense you can let them go and do the process all over again and still have fun...plus didnt you say you wanted to do more with your life than mess with cars...i say go for a change and sell the car...plus if you get interested again you can always start another project later down the line...but if you love the car too much..i guess keep it :) what do you want more? if you dont know, sit down and make a list about pros and cons to help you decide.

Super Bleeder!! 11-11-2004 03:57 AM

hells no, keep that nutty wagon!

santa 11-11-2004 04:12 AM

keep that fucking car man your an idiot to sell it!

SuperSleeper 11-11-2004 08:43 AM

I'm going to have to say... sell it to the guy. That's more than you could expect a typical DSMer to dish out, and you seem to always have complaints about it. Imagine what you could do with $10k besides get a decent reliable car... pay some bills... buy a new guitar... get some guitar lessons... follow Mraz around the country...

Kracka 11-11-2004 10:57 AM

If you truely want to sell it, that is more money than you'll ever get offered again for it. Weigh all your options and just decide which is best for you right now.

JET 11-11-2004 12:15 PM

Yep, that is very good money for the car. If you truely do want to sell, then this is the guy to sell it to!

Raptor 11-11-2004 12:19 PM

I don't think you should if there is a big question in your mind. You will just end up spending another 12K next year to build a replacement ;)

That's pretty much the same thing I said to him too.

Sell it!

Goat Blower 11-11-2004 01:14 PM

Wow, that's alot for a modded DSM. If you are you're sure you're getting out of this, then sell it, that deal won't come along again. If you're unsure, keep the car and have fun with it. Remember, unless you racked up credit card debt to build the car, it's probably paid for. The only way I'd sell my car is if I could instantly replace it with an NSX.

npaulseth 11-11-2004 02:15 PM

Dude, this is going to be a tough choice to make. You have spent a lot of time dealing with the car, but $10k is a lot of money. If you really want to move onto the west coast, I don't see any other way than selling your car. I think it would be a really hard thing to do, but if you need money, I say go for it. That car is insanely sweet, but it's only going to cost you more money in the end. Do whatever you think if best though. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do.

A//// Guy 11-11-2004 03:06 PM

I say sell it so you wont bug me about buying parts off it haha.

I would sell it. If someone offered me 8k right now for my car Im sure Id sell it. Almost 10K for that car is very good, and that chance wont come up again. If you past it up you will end up having to part the car out if you want to make any money off it and that is alot more work then just selling it as a whole.

Pushit2.0 11-11-2004 03:11 PM

I dont know.

If there is any question in your mind "don't sell it" Personally I think you didn't get a chance to enjoy your hard work.

Like everyone else has said that's a lot of money for a 1G, regardless of Mods...

It's your call you have to descide what you want to do. If the cars paid for and you want to move on and do something else. Then why not do it? You don't have to sell your car to Change your life unless you need the $$$$.... keep the car as a daily driver. Just stay focused on what you want out of life. And the car will become a 2ndary part of your life instead of the primary.

jpretz 11-11-2004 04:31 PM

It would be a very tough choice...

Shotgun! 11-11-2004 08:21 PM

I say sell it if you want but don't get outa the game! You don't have to own a DSM to be in the group! We need you here. Who is gonna be knutty with you gone?

At-Least-It's-An-Evo 11-11-2004 08:47 PM

Well, he sent me an offer of $10k the way it sits, or $11k with it tuned with more boost and supporting fuel. I am 75% thinking I might take it. I told him to give me a day to think about it and he's cool with that.

Sounds like a good deal for you. I would sell it as is. What if it pops with more boost? Sell it and then offer to tune HIS car for a fee. You will also want a legal disclaimer for this with the bill of sale.

Raptor 11-11-2004 10:23 PM

Reid brings up some valid points. I would do just what he suggested. If you do sell it, do it as is. It would suck to have 10K that close and watch it go up in flames on the dyno. (not to bring that up ;))

At-Least-It's-An-Evo 11-11-2004 10:36 PM

Well, it won't pop ;) but I don't know if it made high 6 or maybe 7 if I'd change my mind....

JustROLLIN 11-11-2004 11:16 PM

Sell it. Build another. I know mine wasnt as quick as yours is, but I got offered a price that I thought was good, so I took it. Tough to let it go, but there will be others. Who knows, maybe you will find another car you would rather have for a good price a week after you sell it. Stranger things have happened.

PSI2HI 11-12-2004 06:00 AM

Get out while you can before you lose your ass on it. If it were mine i wouldn't do the fuel mods or redyno it just for the sake that something did go wrong then your stuck w/ it. If you do go that route i'd get a down payment from the guy to @ least cover the cost of the fuel system and what not. Modded DSM's are becoming harder and harded to sell and worth less and less as times goes on. I had a hell of a time finally getting rid of mine.

Aaaaack! The memories! :(

Shane@DBPerformance 11-12-2004 05:58 PM

Sell the car that cost $12,000 and many hours to build for $9500. Then do that over and over until you are rich!

Sticky Rice 11-12-2004 06:15 PM

Take the money and run... Sell it..

He musta been tutored by AJ ;)

santa 11-13-2004 03:04 AM

dont sell that car you idiot you'll miss it!

At-Least-It's-An-Evo 11-13-2004 01:48 PM

Well.... he called me 4 times in two days. I did it.

I told him I couldn't sell it :( I don't know if I just made the biggest mistake in my life or what...

Kracka 11-13-2004 01:51 PM

Yup ya did ;) Aslong as you are happy with your choice that is all that matters. You did pour a lot of time and money in to that car, and if you are having fun with it there is no reason to sell it. In the end, it is just money....happiness is better than money any day of the week.

Shane@DBPerformance 11-13-2004 01:53 PM

Fix the car up, make 700whp, go run some low 10s and then sell it for $15,000. Then you could afford an SC with dish or a $500 beater and be able to live in Cali for a good 2 months.

AJ 11-13-2004 02:09 PM

Good Choice Nutty!

MustGoFaster 11-13-2004 02:32 PM

Good choise, only sell it if you really want to or if the person offers more that you put into it $$ wise.

niterydr 11-13-2004 04:24 PM

Now go make it fast cher!

Goat Blower 11-13-2004 04:40 PM

Time to break the 700 whp mark.

Jana 11-13-2004 05:00 PM

Good choice Cher :D

A//// Guy 11-13-2004 05:52 PM

Bah now he will just end up parting it out. I think everyone on this board that has a dsm has put ALOT of time into there car... Just becuase of that doesnt mean you shouldnt sell it if the right price comes along.

Even if he makes 700 there is no way he could sell it for 15,000, unless you gold plate it!

Have fun with it but dont kick yourself later or bitch about it after this!! ;)

Shane@DBPerformance 11-14-2004 01:26 AM

I don't think the purpose of building these cars is to sell them for a lot of money. If throwing away ten grand or more on a car seems like a lot to you then you have the wrong hobby.

This is all very relative. For many of us, $10k is a significant amount of our funds. Cars can be your hobby without putting that much into a car... not all of us want 700+hp. I'm sure that's why many of us got DSMs... cheap speed.

Good luck with the car Cher, I hope you accomplish what you're shooting for with it.
