Its time for a new radar detector, now I like the V1 but not the $400 price so than I like the Escort 8500 and the BEL v985 v980 v960 I like voice so the BEL wins price and options. what do ya all think? :rally:

Iceman 11-18-2003 06:19 AM

Why do you want a radar dectector i think there almost usless i mean by the time they shoot you your already speeding... Unless hes parked somewhere and getting other people than i know it would come in handy.. Waste of money in my point of view but yeah..

BEL V985 :) would be my choice

unreal808 11-18-2003 06:32 AM

Ya thay don't work all the time, but the time that thay have worked for me, thay have paid to have. :D

john 11-18-2003 07:52 AM

I agree with Korey. Mine has saved me several times. BTW, I have an escort 8500. It signals them before you can even see them a ways down the road. Even if you dont speed wouldn't you atleast like to know where the cops were? Mine hasn't been working too good lately though. I think it is because I have left it in the sun for the last 2 years. Haven't been caught speeding though or even pulled over.

Check out this thread from a while back about radar detectors: Looky
You may also want to check out this website which appears really know their shit when it comes to radar detectors: Looky #2

Yea mine works well too, havent been pulled over yet ever. So its been worth the money.

Mine was reletively cheap because I got a deal but its a nice one. Whistler 1670 LD laser/radar and it has a memo button you can record stuff on to. :jammin:

A//// Guy 11-18-2003 03:55 PM

I guess the bell's are really good, all the 980 and 990 and vectors did well on the tests.

MATCHBX 11-18-2003 08:23 PM

I have a detector that I use all the time. It's a cheaper one but it works pretty good.

I like my scanner better though. It picks up the regular channels plus it picks up the "mini-repeater" frequencies the patrols have in their cars so they can use their handheld radios. It's a BCT7 made by Uniden. It's saved my butt plenty of times. I love having a scanner in the car.

There is an article from Car and Driver from Jan. 91 or 92 (can't remember) that's called "Ten tips for fearless flying". It details how to make your way through traffic on the highway at a SLIGHTLY faster rate than what they are moving at. It's a really good article. You will learn alot of things about how to stay alert when you're driving.

JDM 11-19-2003 12:56 AM

I work part time with the Saint Anthony PD... I have done numerous ride alongs, and when using a traditional radar, you can just flip it on and off, and still get a lock reading with a tone...

A tone is received (doppler effect) to measure the strength and reliability of the reading. Usually the radar is tuned every night before a shift, or every 24 hours using a pitch fork. The fork is struck, and placed in front of the transciever, usually there are 2-4 (front/rear... State patrol also has left/right). An officer could flip it on for just a split second, and if you're within 1/4 mile, and you're the fastest, closest, or biggest target... you're fucked and you won't even know it... A good tone takes about 1/4 of a second to receive. Try it sometime. If you're driving, and you see the parking lights, you may not kick a signal til your close, or you may only kick it for a second. The most common signals and tones are K and Ka, sometimes X. The same technology is also used on automatic doors at department stores. Not to mention if an officer can obviously see you're speeding, and he is either a prick, or has an onboard cam, he can give you a general speeding ticket... (Tom)

These things are only good if you're in light to moderate traffic, and the cop is country, and leaves his radar on all the time... Not likely though.

:rally: maybe I should get lic plates that filp and a radio jammer and machineguns front and back, an oil slick dump with spikes in it, and surfs to air missiles and a paint job that can change with a switch on the dash, than I would not need a radar detector.............. :3gears: or I could not speed!? dam I can not help myself "Hi my name is Korey and...... I have a speeding problem" dam people are like sheep on the freeways baaa baaa or cattle, get that old fart off the :censored: road, my car needs room! am I an asshole or a jackass? I'm sorry I have been driving the saturn too long and summer is to far away. :headache: the best time to drive is 4:00am ahhh

Couldn't of said it better.. Baa baa "Ill run your ass over foo!" Thats me when i drive... most the time im nice and don't tailgate but yeah... As for the radar thing did some searching and found a license plate frame thingy that blocks the radars senser and send the cop a error screen or something.. Anyway it comes with a 1 year warrenty for no speeding tickets... Yeah i know it covers the speeding ticket but not the insurance which is what i whould be worried about. Also when it gets hit it sends a signal to a red LED you can place anyway telling you thats happening.. Its around 250$ i think can't remeber anyway just thought i would through that at you.

Have you decided?

unreal808 11-19-2003 10:46 AM

BEL V985 $229.00 or around that have to shop online, most of the time local shops sell it for $375.00 and the V960 for $229.00. or I could find it on Ebay. I like the Escort 8500 but the BEL has all of the options I like, price and voice. most of my radar detectors last three years or so. maybe next time I will try the Escort.

1ViciousGSX 11-19-2003 06:57 PM

The Valentine radar detectors are supposed to be really good.

A//// Guy 11-19-2003 07:45 PM

How do radar detectors just die? How do you know when they dont work besides just not turning on...

unreal808 11-19-2003 11:35 PM

the valentine is like $400.00, I love the valentine but the Bel v985 is $220.00, I do not wish to spend more than $100.00 but will come halfway. I know my detector is on its way out when I find a speed trap and go by it two or three times and it beeps one time maybe not at all. and it starts to talk to its self like dasfhgkahdk I have an old cobra with voice. anyway if your detector is more than seven years old it not up to the task of some of the new radar guns.

1ViciousGSX 11-19-2003 11:44 PM

$400 now for Valentine
or $200 for detector plus $200 for ticket later. ;)

Just remember that anything that covers the license plate (transparent or translucent) is illegal. Technically, you're not allowed to even have a license plate frame on it.

Just don't speed. It's that simple. I don't have any room to criticize because I will speed from time to time. Sometimes excessively but almost 90% of the time just under 9 mph over the limit on the highway and just under 5 mph over in town.

Let's see how well most of the younger drivers know their stuff when it comes to traffic laws.

--When can you be pulled over and ticketed for driving the speed limit?--

Anyone over the age of 20 is not allowed to answer. Besides, the younger ones should know the answer, they just got out of driver's ed not too long ago.

I can't argue with that V1is the best, its just that I have had good luck with the under $150.00 radars so this is still a step up the Bel is like 3rd place.

I love my Passport 8500.
Worth evey penney.

Jakey 11-28-2004 10:08 PM

So I'm planning on picking up a radar detector over Christmas break and I came across this article: http://www.radartest.com/Best%20Detector%20Under%20$100%20rev%201.pdf

The price range used in that article is what I'm looking to spend. I don't speed heavily so I don't need excessive protection, hence why I'm looking at the lower end models. Does anyone have any experience with those mentioned in the article?

A//// Guy 11-29-2004 01:14 AM

I have a 2 year old whistler that has most of the features the one int hat article has. Its saved me a few times and for the 80 bucks I spent on it, it was worth it... well my aunt worked at sears so I got it cheaper but it still a nice unit for the money. Ive found police like KA band alot. So look for something that scores high in that. The whistler did pretty good though. In city false alarms are mostly x band.

Sometimes it's nice to know that you are getting pulled over so you can hide the heroin & dead hookers before he stops you ;)

But the 8500 X50 is $300 for the regular one with the red display, thats the noly difference, $40 extra for the blue display. I have the red one in my dak, and blue one in my SRT.

Although, im looking at getting the SRX right from escort soon

They really are the best. Others are watered down as far as sensitivity goes. They might claim to have the same features, but they don't. The cost means nothing seeing as how it's the last radar detector you will ever need. They send you the new ones when they come out. Seeing as how no one can compare to them yet and they've been around for years, i'd say it could be some time:) I will say that there is nothing like "seeing" the cop from ten miles out!
Edit: My father owns one and we could see a cop from ten or more miles out when on our last trip, a few months back. We would be cruising at 90mph and it would start to go off. My father would just say "give it a minute and then back off". Sure enough, it worked over and over!

finch63tsi 12-02-2004 09:52 AM

escort solo 1 was named the best in auto week

Shotgun! 12-03-2004 01:01 AM

the Ford Focus was named best in autoweek. Whoever pays them the most wins.

finch63tsi 12-03-2004 07:24 PM

yeah that is true , also techtv just did a review of the top radar detectors like 6 months ago and the escort solo 1 and the escort 8500 tied, i have ran cobra's all my life no tickets with it in the car yet!!!

unreal808 12-03-2004 11:03 PM

I have had the BEL vector 985 for a year now, The cost was $214.00, I love it.

dylan 12-04-2004 12:07 AM

Yeah dude I had a 8500 once it worked great. GG bestbuy discount

Re: Radar

Well I received my Beltronics Express 925 today, $106.99 after tax. It is rated the best radar detector under $100 by radartest.com so I thought I'd give it a try. I especially like the fact that it is designed and manufactured in Canada which I realize isn't the USA, but pretty damn close.

Alpine TSi 01-06-2005 08:31 PM

Re: Radar

Great choice the 925 is a great unit, let me know how it works for you as my old ass bel is dying.
