Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Picked up a new bike and figured I'd make a thread to help me keep track of it and what not.
It's a 2012 Kawasaki ZX10R that I brought home on June 26, 2014. It was a new left over that they wanted to move so got a halfway decent deal on it. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps5a5ae6b0.jpg After picking it up I bought a right away Zero Gravity Dark Smoke Double Bubble Series Windscreen, mounted/wired my GPS and set out to California. Put a little over 7,500 miles on it and bike did just great. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...pscd39abfc.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps4a4029f7.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psd504ca75.jpg After I got home I threw it on the dyno to get a baseline before I started to mod it. Bone stock it made 155 hp to the rear tire. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps974035c4.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xopWUI-NQQQ&hd=1 After the baseline I put on a Brock's Alien Head Slip On and got flashed by Archer (local guy in Fargo) and threw it back on the dyno. Also got a Competition Werkes integrated tail light and mounted the plate on the tail with some double sided tape. Really helped clean the bike up. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps7ac81b32.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps9d5d2b35.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps5d3a9f20.jpg It made 174.5 after a slip on and flash, a 19.2 increase. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHjUmchyQ-A&hd=1 I have an 8-12" Evil Swing Arm coming which should put the bike at 68" wheel base which should help a lot at the drag strip. Also got a Power Commander 5 from the same guy that I'll use to get a fine tune on the bike come spring. I've got Graves Block Off Plates sitting in the garage that I'll install before I get a tune. Things I will probably buy before heading to the track this year: Chain/Gearing Evil Chain Gaurd Roaring Toyz Adjustable Lowering Link Adjustable Kickstand Brock's Clutch Mod - eliminates the slipper clutch Brock's Heavy Duty Springs or their cushion package Shinko Hookup Drag Radial Tire Hopeful with those mods it can run some mid to low 9's. I was able to get some solid 9.5's in with my old r1 and that thing had about 20 less hp and wasn't as long. Goal is to run some 8.99 or better with it at some point! Longer term mods that I have in mind over the winter or whenever I have money: Air filter, maybe BMC race as I've always liked them Custom Dyno Tune - Have to figure out if it's worth it to run race gas. Guys pick up a lot of power on VP MR12 but its expensive. See how close I get that 8 second goal lol Brock's Dragshock EZ or some type of drag shock Airshifter - DME makes an air shifter bracket for $25 and I have the parts from my r1 to run the air shifter. So that part would be cheap, just need a quick shifter or figure out a way kill ignition. Then if I still can't hit 8s I'd try a lightweight battery and maybe ceramic wheel bearings. If that doesn't work, nitrous it is:riped: So here is to going Stupid Fast! |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Sounds like an awesome trip! Have you mapped out your route?
|
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
I haven't gone back and update the route each day but these are pretty close to what it was
http://goo.gl/maps/Zk0or http://goo.gl/maps/ba5Bt https://goo.gl/maps/gYrvx http://goo.gl/maps/HphMs Google maps didn't like all the points I had in there so had to break it up into 4 different maps. Took a few different attempts in different browsers before I figured that one out lol. Horrible blog with more bike/non bike pictures from the trip http://bdcornelius.weebly.com/blog/archives/05-2014 |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Nice bike! What kind of mpg did you average on your trip?
|
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
I cannot comprehend this speed.
That's a huge power gain. |

Savings bought me that swing arm lol Quote:
Who knows if it will ever go that fast, those are just my pipe dreams :dj: |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Wow you took a really indirect route all around! Still have no idea how your butt didnt fall off on that trip, that would drive me crazy doing a road trip like that in a car let alone that bike! How did you not stop to drink or eat or pee for that 13 hour sprint home?
Very cool! |

Was able to get the Riflemans's throttle insert installed on Friday night as well as the PMR tether kill switch. The throttle insert makes it like a quick turn throttle, but for only $25 and only took about 15 minutes to install because I'm a little slow sometimes. Very easy mod and worth the $25. I also had the PMR switch around from the r1 so that was a free mod. Need one of these to run 9.99 or faster, and I hope it can break into the 9s first time out. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psd22f3495.jpg Swing arm should be here tomorrow :) Then hopefully chain, sprockets, chain guard and lowering link will be here mid this week. I'll order Brock's clutch mod and stiffer clutch springs, drag radial and trailer restraint pins tomorrow. Didn't take me long to spend my paycheck this week:drive: Hopefully get some more pictures of it stretched next weekend:dj: |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Damn! No time wasted with this thing haha.
|
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Just a question, but if the bike is gonna be set up primarily for straight line speed, why not get the zx14 instead?
|
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
very nice sir

Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Where's up here?
You come down to the cities I'm more than willing to get a little test and compare action in. Going to proving grounds? Maybe go rip a frum roll quick while up there lol |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Dyno guy was able to do an overlay of the base line dyno to the flash/pipe dyno. I thought it was cool to see the overlay
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psa24dc957.jpg I was able to get the swing arm on but due to slow ass shipping from sport bike track gear I won't be able to ride it until next week. Did install the evil swing arm (8-12" over), evil chain guard, Soupy's lowering link and 16 tooth front sprocket. Swing arm was pretty straight forward, what took the most time was trying to get the front sprocket nut off. My impact wouldn't budge it, a breaker bar with the jack handle on the end wouldn't budget it either. Eventually got a buddy to bring over his snap on impact and got it off. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps81b9f663.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps7db776c5.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps2061b614.jpg Next week/weekend hope to get a good amount of crap done: When the rear sprocket comes in the mail, get it on the bike. Then get the chain on and get the rear height all figured out. Ended up going with a -1/+5 sprocket combo which should top me out low/mid 160's Install Brocks Clutch Mod and Brocks Heavy Duty Clutch Springs. Drop the forks down in the triple tree to lower the front and throw on the lowering strap bracket/strap. Get the Pit Bull Trailer Restraint system mounted on the trailer so it'll be a super easy one person job to get it on the trailer and 'strapped' down. If I can score a deal on a used engine kill box I'll buy that, Schnitz coil harness and a DME air shifter mount. That way I could run my air shifter from the r1 for pretty cheap. |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Nice job, looking phresh yo!
Looks ready to run some 8s |

Ordered up a BMC Race Air Filter, Schnitz Coil Kill Wiring harness, MPS Electronic Ignition Kill box, DME Air Shifter Mount and some new spark plugs today. Going to be a busy weekend next weekend :) Also got the front lowered about 1 3/4 last night and figured out my lowering strap brackets from the r1 fit perfectly on this bike. Hopefully take it for a spin this week with it lowered/stretched and see how poorly it rides lol |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Soooooo sexy and soooooo fast. Deff be fun to see that thing rip

Finished installing the chain tonight. Went with a black 160 link 525 EK MVXZ chain and ended up cutting out 5 links. Could have went with 4 links to get another inch out of the swing arm but figured the long chain would probably stretch a bit and then I would run out of adjustment if it did. This bike also uses abs type grooves in the rear rotor to get a speed reading. Since the longer swing arm, the wiring would have reached but would have looked like poo and been really stretched. I cut into the harness and extended it about 12 inches and tucks in nice on the swing arm and looks pretty good I think. I took it on a little rip after all that and it spun pretty hard in 1st almost every time I got on it. Seemed to hook pretty good once, but then seemed to be spinning just a bit at the top of 1st. Granted it was a bit wet/damp out but I'll be curious to see how it hooks on nice try pavement with a street tire. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps2e35b980.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...pse0cbc172.jpg Depending on money I might try and get it tuned on 87 before proving grounds. Was thinking of going with mr12 race gas but at 150 for 5 gallons and being harder on the engine, I think I'll pass unless I need the boost to get it into the 8s. |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
If you need boost I have a good condition 14b here.
|
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
I would think making it that long would decrease downward force and traction? Seems redonk long haha, sweet project tho!

Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Not to be too OT, but it doesn't look like it. I have no time to mess with it and I'm trying to track down a broken driveline part. Took me 4 weeks to pull out both rear axles, reinstall and fill fluid. That is how much time I have.
|
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
wtf Aaron I had no idea you were broke down. You would have had a good chance to win your class this year
|
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Got a few things done this week/weekend.
First thing I started to tackle was to replace the spark plugs, install Graves Block Off Plates and change the air filter http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps80231d0d.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps65cad065.jpg The air filter was just plain nasty... http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psdbec25e5.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...pse0de62a3.jpg There was even a good amount of bugs in the frame leading to the air box. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps0dddd504.jpg Then installed a MPS Engine Kill box for the air shifter. It fits perfectly where the stock exhaust servo sat. Probably throw some velcro down once I finish wiring up the air shifter solenoid. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps584d6b41.jpg ^Can also see the Power Commander 5 installed on the side of the battery too! Was able to get the air shifter cylinder installed as well. Used a DME mount, made it stupid easy, and parts I had left over from the r1. Using parts from gainger ... 5ZEE4 - Air Cyl for the air cylinder, 6JJ52 for the Solenoid and 4TAE9 which is a new longer clevis/yoke. Will most likely run it off nitrous so I can use it on the street and not worry about running out. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps9806a977.jpg The guy that flashed my ecu said he modified his ram air and the bike went crazy lean and he said it felt faster after messing with the tune. Figured I might as well follow suit and give it a try. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps71aa7eba.jpg The stock ram air has a lot of foam and what they call a 'birdcage' in there. Interwebz says its to help keep noise down but I just want to make the most powa I can. So time to get all that extra stuff out of there! Took out all the foam, birdcage and a little flap that looked like it'd reduce air flow. Finished picture: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psc27a229f.jpg Will finish tomorrow as I wanted to get 2 screws to block off little holes to help keep as much air flow as possible Installed the Brock's clutch mod to get rid of the slipper clutch and also installed their heavy duty clutch springs. Hopefully helps the clutch last longer on the track. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps97a9c72e.jpg Still have a bit more work to get it fully ready for proving grounds but it should be ready! |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Really makin progress on this thing. I wanna see it run some 8's! Might be a good race for Leasure. :)

Think about the only way I'd be a good race for Mark would be if I sloss'd him and went on the second yellow if they don't have a pro tree:rollinglaugh: I know Nate said he wanted to try and get a run in during the grudge racing so I better make sure to be on my game |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Finished putting the bike back together Friday and took it for a spin on Saturday.
Installed Power Commander's auto tune which you set a desired target a/f ratio and the piggy back tries to shoot for the targeted ratio while riding and then offers suggested changes to the map when you come back from the ride and download the trims. Seems to work pretty slick and bike feels a bit faster after the tune. Also trying out 87 octane on it and all seems well. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...b121f93090e9d1 Also installed Driven Bar Ends and a GB Racing Alternator Cover. When I hooked up nitrous to the air shifter off the bike to check for leaks on Friday nothing leaked. Filled my 2.5 lb bottle yesterday and went to go try and it out and it leaks from the solenoid :( A couple test hits sealed up the solenoid and was able to get it to work a few times on real easy 4-5 and 5-6 shifts on the highway. Tried again on the way back from a cruise and leaked really bad and wasn't able to shift the bike. Going to pick up a new solenoid during lunch and put it on and hopefully that's my only issue. After that only things left to do to the bike before proving grounds is to have Paul swap on my drag radial and put on the rear brake. Would like to get my trailer rigged up to use my trailer stand setup but thats kind of a luxury if I don't have the time. Fingers crossed for going fast next weekend! |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Excited to see some fast mph runs!

Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Turns out my regulator was just set way too high for the air shifter. Looked at the gauge and it was pegged past 200 psi. Dropped it down to 140ish and the leaking stopped.
Took it for a test ride and it worked perfectly, even from 1st to 2nd full throttle where the r1 never seemed to work right for that shift. Got the Pit Bull Trailer restraint all mounted up on the trailer last night. It's pretty slick as it doesn't compress the suspension or anything and can take the mounting parts off so if you want to use the trailer for something else you don't have a big motorcycle stand in the way. https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...711984ce224130 Might still mount a chock that would be easily removed after I take it for a test spin if the front tire bounces around |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Pit Bull Trailer Restraint System worked pretty slick, threw a strap around the front tire to help to keep it from moving around when hitting bumps. GTO pulled and camping gear just fine this weekend up to BIR, rear end was squated a bit low when loaded up but drove no problemo.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...2f3c0563132129 Bike did pretty good at the track. Got close to my 150 trap goal, best of 149, and hit my goal of doing better than the r1 first time out. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...e2&oe=548B6A0A Best time was 9.247 @ 148.76. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...89016887_o.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMk73NFVGXs&hd=1 The only issue at the track was the air shifter deciding not to work. Ended up taking off the bottle and whole setup and just foot shifting all weekend. Giving up on using nitrous for the air shifter for now and going to try just using air from the swing arm. Thinking if I can get my 60' times down and the air shifter it's got a 9.1/9.0 in it. |
Re: Brad's New Bike - '12 ZX10R
Hell yeah Bad Brad!
Good thing I didn't race you because it would have gotten my ass handed to me. That air shifter might help a small amount on each shift that could add up to a tenth for sure. Good seeing you keep at it and it will click a 8!:spin: |
