Project Black ValentNine AKA DSM9.0

The cure for a broken heart? Maybe!

So.....I was hanging out with some guys on Valentine's day eating some delicious sausages (Get your minds out of the gutter! We were at New Bohemia--a german delish beer hall in Minneapolis! ) and I decided I should give my buddy Rosey a Valentine's card.

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6183.sized.jpg

Inside was a check. Several people have asked for how much....I'll just say it was a fair price. Not too much for me, not too little for him. We've been friends for 6(?) years, basically as long as he's owned his Black 2006 Evo IX GSR SE (which he's owned since it was brand new!). So, we weren't out to screw each other. Deep down, I know he wants to see it run again. Sure I gave him shit for his ghey black wheels, but I think we did 90% of the maintenance and mods on this thing in my garage...Exhaust, suspension, E85 conversion, a few brake jobs, a clutch, turbo swap, and both timing belt jobs....this car has a little bit of me in it and I wanna see it healthy again!

Wellllll......at 128,000 miles on the stock longblock gave up the ghost. Crankwalk. Pretty much unheard of on a CT9A evo, but this one somehow got it. It happened *sloooowly* over time and the car ran worse and worse as the bearings slowly ate the crank and the crank ate the CAS, until finally it died while we were in the car together in a very dangerous spot on the intersection of 169 & 394.

Well, a few days later, here's how she sits:

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6221.sized.jpg

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo9/IMG_6211.sized.jpg

Crank is fuct, cams look ok, head is ok, and my fingers are sooooo crossed about the block...hoping hoping hoping it might be salvageable. It's at the machine shop now, we will soon see!

What the heck am I doing with this thing? Honestly I have no idea. He was done with it, and I just couldn't bear to see it go. My evo8 was taken from me prematurely and this will be my little return to CT9A glory. Maybe zip around locally, maybe cry and sell it instantly, but hopefully I can keep it and go have some real fun with it. We will see!

Awesome! Any plans to do a stroker since you have to replace the crank anyway?

Still not sure yet. If the block is trash, I'm looking for a whole shortblock/longblock or start looking for a mishmash combo of parts....should know more in a few days.

2.3L is the much easier route for the IX w/MIVEC.

Gah! I completely forgot to include the modlist of this thing in the first post! It's a laundry list of all things I love to do to evos, right off of the infamous $100-at-a-time thread:

Forgot about the IX part, hopefully the block is good so that would be the way to go. Just can't say enough good things about extra displacement.

The Evo IX turbo isnt a bad choice either. Especially with a stroker ;)

Is it weird I'm as excited to see what Scheides does with this as I am my own car? lol

I have a Manley forged crank in my other block if your block is ok, its the 88mm stroke

Nice valentine day story. Welcome to the 2 evo club. Sounds like a fun project, 2.3l - ef3 - e85? Will this replace the VW wagon/truck?

Dude thats why I started this project section in the first place! ALL of us can live vicariously through each other! This car will keep an IX turbo for a while, thats for sure. And funny enough, I've followed your IX RS thread just the same ;)

Nothing will replace 'the truck' ....it is so comfy/easy to drive, I love it.

Re: Project Black ValentNine

With all that said, I have some amazing news! Just heard--the block is salvageable! Wahoo! I have been shopping everywhere from a stock longblock to a 2.3L long-rod I-beam stroker setup. In the end, KISS wins. I MUST keep the budget tight on this build and I don't have any plans for a massive turbo setup, just a good fun evo. SOOOOOOO, I woulda-coulda-shoulda done a 6266/2.3L/big cams etc and I woulda-coulda-shoulda done a stock longblock (but couldn't find one) so here's what I decided to do for this build. YES its a little mish-mash of stuff but overall I'm following an award-winning recipe that I've seen kick my ass all over BIR the last 3 years, plus a little of my own ideas:

Original block will be line-bored and fully machined
I found an OEM 88mm crank locally
Molner H-beam rods (good stuff--google them!)
Wiseco HD pistons 9:1
Stock IX head w/ stock valves (cleaned, machined as necessary)
GSC 5039 valvesprings
Stock IX cams
Stock IX turbo

That's the motor build. I have a few other monkey wrenches to deal with next, I'll update on those when the motor is done. :)

Also, I read back through my posts and I guess I never came out and said this...Rosey had the car at RS motors; Ron is who diagnosed the crankwalk. He had the damn thing half apart and with the state of my garage and the weather, I asked him to finish the job. Ron has been an amazing help and as lofty as my goals are of putting this thing back together and fixing it with my own hands, chances are it'll stay there and keep being put together by Ron & co...I WANT to be the one to fix it but I just don't have the time :( Still, it will get plenty of fun time once its back together, so its not so sad! Plus Ron is kinda an ok guy ;)

Glad to see someone on the boards pick this up. I was trying to talk knoxville into buying it.

If I had money I would've bought it too.

Congrats and can't wait to see you cruising around in this.

PS. You need a bigger garage.

Heh idk if I'd call an 8-year-old car 'baller' but it sure will be STS!

Honestly I'm not sure yet; gotta just take one step at a time.
