Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Like the title asks; who needs a head?
Currently I have 6 & 7 bolt heads ready to be rebuilt and sold. They can be stock rebuilds or performance based; it's up to you. The price will vary from what each individual wants to have done. You may also supply your own head if you wish. The story behind this post goes as follows; I am attending Northwest Technical College to become a High Performance Engine Machinist. In one of the few cylinder heads classes I have this semester I must rebuild 6 sets of heads. Now if I were a V8 guy this wouldn't be a problem. Since I have zero use for any V8 heads, I have stuck with 4g63s. Now because of this, I have to complete 12 heads. Personally I have ZERO use for 12 4g63 heads. lol Three or possibly four heads would be the MAXIMUM number of heads I could currently use on my own projects. Even that may be pushing it. 4g63 Clean and check - $20 Pressure test - $15 Valve job - $90 Resurface - $20 6g72 Clean and check - $40 Pressure test - $30 Valve job - $135 Resurface - $25 Guide and seat work will vary on number needing to be replaced. Feel free to post up questions or concerns! If you're interested feel free to PM me as well! Thanks! |

What's the cheapest?
No offense, but you can get a cheapish head job from local cyl head places not some kid in school. But I like cheap head pretty much whenever where I can get it. |
Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Don't we all.

In all honesty; I can do nearly anything for about half of what most shops will charge. To be downright honest, the quality is there as well. Judge the fact I am still in school but remember that everyone has to start somewhere. No one is born with the knowledge to be a machinist, the ability to walk up to and operator a machine either. |
Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Again, I wasn't trying to offend you.
That sounds good and you should add that first paragraph to your original post. What would the price be for a basic cleanup like that? Quality will be in the pie, until you have trap speeds/dyno sheets/flow charts it will be hard for you to say something like that unless you are just talking basics. If you had prices it might help too. Again I'm not trying to offend you, I'm just telling you what I think to you. This seems like a good deal for people buying used heads and questioning their quality, kinda like what happened with GH a couple of months ago. |
Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
If I can find a cheap enough head to throw your way I'll have you build me a pretty plain Jane back up head.
|
Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Clean and check - $20
Pressure test - $15 Valve job - $80 Resurface - $20 Guide and seat work will vary on number needing to be replaced. The flashing and various porting work will be hourly. My rate for now will be $10.00/hr. I hope this gives you all a little better of an idea of how cost effective this is. Until I am out of school. lol Then only God knows. |
Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
now thats not a bad deal really^

The exact reason I came to 'Style with this was to get a name started for myself. A good one at that! As far as flow charts go, I still have to build the fixture to fit a 4g to our flow bench. Quote:

If you can do flow testing you will have 0 problems selling your services. I have an extra 1G head no-one seems to want if you need more cores, it came off my motor running just fine but my car is setup for 2G stuff. Good luck to you. |

I'll be asking the instructor about the flow bench again tomorrow. He told my friend (Honda enthusiast) and I what we needed to make to get our heads to fit the bench. He was pretty vague though and it was awhile back. Thanks! |

UPDATE
I talked to my instructor Paul a few minutes ago and he said he is willing to buy everything to make the 4g63 work with our SuperFlow SF-750! I have found everything needed (I believe), and I am about to pass the information onto him. I will keep updating this for everyone who is interested. Thanks, Chayce. |
Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!

Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Just one or two heads. I have a stock 6 bolt head that could get the full port job and the works and maybe another 6 bolt that needs to be decked for sure. I'll have to mic his head to see what's already been taken from it if anything

Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Pictures and shat.
This is how I start with the heads. I don't really touch anything until it is this clean. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps6060d7f6.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps7d077fa1.jpg I didn't take many pictures of this because I was focused on getting the job done rather than attempting to be a photographer. lol Cleaning up flashing; this first example was of the worst I hadn't already touched. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps52ac26e1.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psbf7bc668.jpg Different location; note the not yet finished oil return. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psc8422e2e.jpg Oil port mod. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psa054c2f7.jpg The customer wanted the intake side gasket matched, polished and the intake divider knife edged. The polish in this photo was before roughing it back up. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psd55cc31f.jpg Flashing cleaned up in the exhaust runners. This was before a mild polish. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psa00753dc.jpg This first picture is a different valve job I preformed on a head of my own. The second is of the above pictured customers head. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psd5c043d3.jpg *Note seating mark/line; exhaust side.* http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psc6cd4e45.jpg Thanks for looking! Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Wow that is some nice work. I have noticed the nasty casting on the oil return on all my heads.

Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Thought I'd update this some.

Thanks! |
Re: Heads - Who needs 'em?!
Turned out great man! To anyone considering getting a head done, have this guy do it. Great guy kept me informed on things throughout the job. Thanks again Chayce!

For anyone looking at the turnaround time of Jeremy's head; I had well into 12 hours of porting, polishing and cleaning the flashing up. Plus running into a few kinks with valves needing to be replaced, waiting on parts as well as taps. Next up; a set of 6g72 heads! |
