team ab drag race and street builds
4 Attachment(s)
this should be a fun thread for those who want to join in. As many of you know last year I started off strong with a nice dyne session hitting 527hp 425tq db numbers. I later broke the driveshaft and rear diff out at pg1. during an oil change I realized the engine had been eating itself up. The block and crank had some pretty good wear on it so I picked up a 2.4 block and crank. and self built the engine. The engine was fantastic but I tech failed because of no battery shut off on outside of the car. so after 525 miles on the engine we start this.. engine pulled and sold

so out with the 2.4 and on to the 2.0 i picked up a pretty raged looking 2.0 block with the intention of building it up until I realized the same built I was going to do has already been done and was ready for me to pick up. Thanks to a member here I picked up a 6bolt 2.0 stock crank, manley turbo tuff I beams, wiseco e85 hd2 pistons, acl race bearings, kiggly main brace, all new and fresh. 6 bolt head with super tech ss nitrated valves, kiggly hp beehives, kiggly hla, mitsu 4 layer head gasket, l19 head studs all ready to rock besides cams. I also picked up a jmf drag mani.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Is that Nick's old motor and turbo?
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
nick cornfed's old turbo yes. motor no its a 2.0 btw I am nick too haha
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Looks like boomdeeze's old 2.0L.
Team? You ever make any passes with the old car? What does your red 2G look like? Good like this year. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
it is his old 2.0 and yes team AB has been going for years now just a few of us dsm guys.
My car looks like a red 2gb with carbon hood. yes I made a pass at pg1 last year went 13.25@125 with a 2.? 60ft. 2nd pass was the broke at pg. andre went 12.4?@115 hta16g 18psi exhaust leak and 02 leak, boost was shuttering the entire time with spool up at 4 grand. Jesssie hasn't had a chance to run yet though. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Looks like some nice setups! I know a few bikes that would mess around on the street this summer if you want to try those cars out.
White 2g looks sweet, but where does he put his spare tire? |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Wow you guys made quite an upgrade this year.
That is sick, you might want to check the safety rules for running E85 and running sub 10.0 |

Celica that's sounds like fun for sure. And yes the wiked white 2g is literally a dream car. Lol spare tire will be on the trailer. His goal now is getting rid of 10lbs of wiring.
Aaron we would appreciate any knowledge you can bring to this thread about things like that for sure. Here are some pics of the pg trip mine is the red 2gb carbon hood |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Here's one up for debate. What cams should I run in this settup? I have a 3582 and will most likely end up with a hta 3586 or gtx wheel. So being that I can flow 62.5 lbs/min now and may be able to flow 75. I feel like I am inbetween cams. I am pretty set on kelfords or gsc cams, but what one will better suit me? I will be reving in the 9ish area.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
I'd run a 280 or GSC S3, but to be honest I haven't seen any testing between the 2 to say that the difference is worth the worry about power.
Both are quality so whatever you are more comfortable with/get a better price on. Reck, I'm at work but I have the 2014 NHRA rulebook downloaded, I will post it up here for others when I get a chance. With those size turbos you guys will need it. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
lol thanks for the nice words of optimism. I talked to kevin kiggly today about it and he recommends going with a kelford 280 or 288. The only thing he was unsure about was my punishment manifold. He is using kelfords this year btw and he is also going to be running a 2.0 fwiw. So anyways back on topic I got to thinking devin shultz is running the same manifold as me so I think I will try and get him on the phone for a bit to see if he has tried any combo cams like the 288 276 etc. we all know the intake can handle a large cam it's my exhaust that could be in question.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
You can't go wrong with either cam. I run gsc s3, it works for me. I know kiggly was reving that 2.3 to the moon, 2.0 would make more sense for him.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
mark could you dive into the intake mani/exhaust mani/turbo setup on the s3 with spool and rpm range please:) yes kiggly is awesome he was telling my about the cam centerlines throughout his rpm range with that mivec head and it's plain awesome. at some points it's equivalent to 2 teeth off haha. talking about 89deg to 130-135deg. He too was talking about the cam test that spoolin dub has mentioned and said he didn't see any reason at least for me to even consider a 272 with the 280 being 200ish on spool and big hp up top. good info I thought i'd share.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
if anyone has input on trans at this point I am open to hear discussion on that. So far my peak interest is a jacks 2.2hd. when I called sheep the guy said not unless I already had a one of theirs, he also said use john or tim and not jack, competition or? either way we are all going manual trans so yes we already know we are doomed just looking for anything that may help...
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Yeah, Shep doesn't do DSM trannies anymore unless he knows you, or you send a blank check.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Andre's car got a lot of my parts. Hatch/lexan, hood, turbo.
I say go auto. Screw shifting. Cars look good btw;) |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
thanks nick and yeah he is completely against an auto at this point, as for me I know I should go auto, but i'm most likely going manual…I honestly don't want to be the guy who turns down good advise but we are kinda set on not going auto yet.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
TR6060 trans is your friend or Viper-spec T56.
There are plenty of guys making power on manual transmission, you just need to talk to them. From what I see a twin disk is a must at higher power levels, I'd say keep an eye out for a dogbox since you guys are putting quality parts in the cars. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Aaron unless I'm mistaken on this ^ we are also not looking to go rwd at this point either.
Dog box is a very real option also. I think for now unless finding a deal we are thinking jacks 2.2 had gears or evo gears and hoping someone has an opinion on that. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
http://www.teamrip.com/DSM_AWD_STAGE...D_SERVICE.html
I had that trans in my car back in the day with the 4 spider and thing shifted really nice. With a twin disc I could shift at 8k like butter |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
I would look at TMZ as well.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
I've looked at them all Tim or tmz stage 4 $3200. John stage 4 $2600. Jacks 2.2 $2600. I think Tim was maybe quoting shipping too idk. Why is jack saying evo 3 gears won't hold up and to get his 2.2hd but yet Tim and john sell evo 3 as stage 4 like jacks stage 3 and say they are fine?
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Evo 3 gears seem to be doing fine in John's Galant
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Both the HD gears and evo3 gears are very strong, I recently read somewhere the evo3 gears are physically narrower than the HD gears which could lead you to believe they aren't as strong, there is tons of info on this subject available. I like the close ratio of the evo3 gears.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
That's great info guys. I know it's a luxury to buy a built trans just didn't realize the burdon of picking what one or what company.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Not real sure you can pick a wrong one. I've never really heard any bad things about any of them. I didn't have the best luck with my TRE, but it was a freak thing and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another from Jon if I needed one. Best thing to do is pick up the phone and talk to each of them and go with who you are most comfortable with.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
so was this freak thing something that was ur fault or his? how did he react. i like johns personality and the times we have talked he really seems great. He also seems to do more of the old school stuff like detailing gears etc, just like an old engine builder who takes all the flash out of a head because it's the details that matter. prices seem fair, really the only thing i'd like to know is in comparison what trans will be better johns stage four or jack's 2.2hd for me. btw thanks goodhart and all who have contributed to this project thread. Bear with me on this one as the trans will be the most indecisive part of my build that I foresee.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
Having dealy with Jacks Transmissions and Shep Trans (which isnt an option) I'd say your screwed. I had a very bad experience with Jacks and I would not recommend them.
My Jacks built tranny broke after 5,000 miles of normal driving on a low power car. They were horrible at communicating and I was never satisfied. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
^ no I'm not screwed as john and Tim are still options. That's too bad about your relationship with jacks.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
I had a tough time with TRE, after I bought the trans, I couldn't get a hold of the guy.which is a shame since we met in person in eau Claire to do the deal.
I'd go with jacks, he has a lot of R&D into DSM trans. |
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
You could also try a faceplated trans from liberty or thru Raif at RRT. I've heard good things about his work.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
^ never heard of this faceplated stuff I will do some looking. Damn one bad for each now lol
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
I only ever used Shep, but without that option, I'd probably go with TMZ as he's good and reasonably close. I just picked up the Evo3 5th gearset from him, easy to deal with.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds
I really want to just build my own at some point as I'm sure I'll end up going through a few of them. I just haven't seen a write up or anything into detail enough to want to try it at the moment. I'm Deff gonna have a decision to make here as all three that are left are most likely all great options really. Than maybe I'll pick up a spare and learn how to build one myself. Anyone ever try the hd gears that jack is claiming to be better than evo?

Did some powder coating today for the first time and the results were awesome. Next will be that ugly compressor cover and who knows what else. Should add around 50 hp or so.
|
Re: team ab drag race and street builds
What about Ron at RS Motors? He does tons of rebuilds on Evo transmissions. Just a thought.
Also nice work on the powder coating, did it yourself? You must have access to some of the tools needed |
