Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
So I am planning to take my dad's corvette on the cruise this year with my car missing parts.
I heard like a month ago he was getting new tires and he said he was putting the Michelin Pilot super sports on there. I was pumped as I have heard awesome things about them, even considering them for the evo. Found out this morning that they are still back ordered at this point with no due date in sight. Well my dad said the rears are basically slicks cause his dumb ass has been burning them up knowing he was getting new tires. The sizes factor are these: 245/40/18 front 285/35/19 rear I think its the rears that are backordered as tirerack shows them as that as well. Thoughts? Any compareable tires? I am not coming up with too much but I am not a tire guru. Should he look at going a bit wider than factory perhaps? He wants a pure summer tire but nothing track ready, something that will get 15-20k miles with ease I would think. Any help is appreciated, would rather not have a car with shit tires for the cruise, don't need to end up in the ditch :) Thanks! |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Continental ExtremeContact DW; both sizes are currently in-stock at Tirerack plus they're on sale. These are the tires I will be getting next for my Evo after these shitty Nittos burn off.

Also, can you link them? Maybe I am crazy but the conti's seem to have multiple listings, and I can't tell which tire is which. It almost looks like they list the DW's twice on the site I was just looking at. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
They are a very good performance street tire. People are saying the sidewalls are a little soft for track duty, but from the sounds of it that will be no concern to your dad. Their grip is very good though, plus they're one of the lighter tires on the market (shaving rotational weight is never a bad thing). The Michelin in question is a 300 treadwear and the Continental is a 340; they're both categorized as a "max performance summer" tire.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
You could also look at the Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position (also currently in-stock and these will actually be the cheapest choice after rebate).

Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Sweet, thanks Kracka. I told my dad to pick one of those and just get it done. I need tires on the vette for cruise action :)
|
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
No doubt! You really can't go wrong with any of those three and I'd feel comfortable putting any of them on my Evo or my dad's GTO!
In fact, maybe I'll just buy a set now for my car... Did I mention how much I hate these Nittos? |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Do it :)
I have zero complaints about my hankook v12's but I don't push them much. I will be getting something a bit more aggressive next time though. Rivals or PSS (with DR's for track) I think. I will update on what he picks. Then hopefully on the cruise they work well. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
I had the V12's once and won't purchase those again; the Sumitomo HTRZ III's are a better tire for that class/price.
|
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
V12's are mushy pieces of shit. Agreed that HTRZ III's are way better for same price.

NT-05, sorry Kracka haha.
Or the RE-11. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
I am surprised that you guys say the v12's aren't that good. For the price and how long they last I like them a lot.
I cheaped out on tires for these as I had just spent 1500 on tires the year before (275's are pricey :() and didn't want to spend a lot. Maybe its just my rim/tire size setup but I think they are pretty good for DD duty and have plenty of grip, even when I was making 750whp. |

Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
I picked up the Sumitomo's this year with my new wheels, I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Even in the rain, they had awesome grip up at Brainerd, and with the Koni's on full stiff, they don't even make a peep at 70 around clover leafs.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Damn, I have only ever seen those shitty NeoGens on Hondas, and they are extremely common on them. For as traction limited that Hondas are, they all seem to pick some of the worst tires. The pilot super sports are popular on the Vipers. I have had some decent HP RWD domestic V8s in that run the Nitto NT-01 road race tires on the street and they seem to hookup very well at low speeds, but won't last long at all.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
He ended up with the continental extremecontact DW's. Even though I told him to check tirerack he ended up using discount tire and he said the pole positions were out of stock.
But they are supposed to be here next week. He goes out of town Thursday so we will see if he gets them in time. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
I work for Bridgestone/Firestone and get pretty damn good deals on tires, including no charge mount/balance. All the ultra high performance classed tires including the whole pole position line. Or even if you looking for regular cheap tires or snow tires I can get you a great deal. When you buy tires you can get a free alignment check also if interested.
PM me for a tire quote if interested. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
I think i need new tires for my Kizashi now, almost 30,000 miles and I think I will get some before snow flies. Yesterday in the rain we had I was really getting close to hydroplaning quite a few times, had to drive slow so guessing treads are getting low, ill confirm later today.
Discount tire recommended Pirelli P7's, anyone have good recommendations for an all season tire for a DD. The P7's look like they have a pretty beast wear rating, 700AA. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
215/55-17?
|
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette

They are at least 17"'s if not 18"'s though but tire rack seemed to say 17's. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Depends which model you have...check your tires and report back :)
Those Pirellis sound like very good tires and get great reviews/ratings. If you wanted to go a bit cheaper, you could check out the Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum. Both currently have mail-in-rebates available on TireRack. |

Anyway, tire size is 235/45/18. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
That comparison does no good unless they were the same brand and line of tires.
|
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Murlo, if you can look at set of Michelin's with a high silica content, they are excellent in the all weather conditions we have in this state and wear very well for the money.
|
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Just remember, that even if a tire has a treadwear rating of 700, that typically means the tread is going to be stiffer than something lower which will result it decreased traction. Don't solely look at a tire as an option because of a high treadwear rating.
|
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
When I first got my evo8 I had continental ContiSportContact all-seasons. They were fantastic. Maybe look at something with not such a high wear rating as that will basically lead to more suck when the snow is deep and ice is present.
|
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
I didn't look at the P7's because of treadwear, only because I was recommended it at discount tire.
Looking through tire rack at my tire size, all the reviews seem to say the p7 is the best in its class and its priced reasonably compared to everything else. I think I am probably going to jump on those, nothing else seems to be jumping out at me. edit: ordered them, guess we will see what happens :) I checked my tires too just now, the most I have is 4/32 and many spots are a bit below that, yikes. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
4/32" is fine for most summer driving conditions, but smart move replacing them before the snow flies.

Tuesday when it was raining all day, 70mph on the freeway and my car was floating on the water, was kinda scary. I had to drive to map going 60mph, took forever! Yea, I think with snow coming its time to get new tires, these made it almost 30,000 miles, not bad for OEM tires, I think they are 340 wear or something so not sure if that is normal or not but its time to go. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Useful information here. I need to replace the tires on the Escort, they have been sucking the past year or so. Fortunately we don't put many miles on it, maybe 10k/year, so I don't care too much about treadwear, 40k miles out of a set will be plenty.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Anybody have experience with these? Tire size is 185/60/15.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
Wow, I should have looked at the tire rack ratings first, they do have horrible snow ratings.
2nd place in All Season Standard Touring is the Firestone Precision Touring at $63/ea, about half the cost of the 1st place Michelin Defender at $114/ea. Looked at the P7 but they don't make it in a 15" wheel. |
Re: Tire Recommendations for 06 Vette
I just got the Pirelli P7's put on last week, loving them so far, comfy, road noise is decent and they still handle well enough for a DD tire.
The real test will come in heavy snow/rain and we will see if they work out. I don't expect snow tire performance, but just the ability to not die :) |
