broke at pg project vid and pics
Yup it's broken. First run i granny shifted and pretty much did everything wrong 13.35. Next run I went for it and so far I know I broke an ear on the diff cover, and two halves of the driveshaft are on the ground, not sure if its u joints or a broken drive shaft yet. I am coming to trailer it home tomorrow and I will start looking into it....Pics to come

Re: broke at pg project thread
WTF?
That is the weirdest breakage Ive ever heard of. I heard there were a few more break downs..... |
Re: broke at pg project thread
Sucks, dude. Do they have a place at BIR where you can leave a car for a few days?
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
If the driveshaft fell out of the car, it is toast. Any dents is no good. It will not be round and will have runout. Time for an aluminum shaft!

Re: broke at pg project thread
Thanks guys. Yes they stored it in the A building for me and my wife was soooo happy to drive down to pick me up. I picked it up and got it home. didnt even want to start looking real hard yet. the u joints connecting the first to second was sheared and gone as well as the last one connecting to the yoke on the rear diff. also the drivers side ear of the diff is broke off. Hope the axles survived...I was nervous and tried to tree the light @ 5,000 rpms and dropped the clutch. Strange part is when I bought the car the kid before me also broke the diff cover, it broke clean off the car. Makes me wonder why? trans and transfer not matched? bad driveshaft from what he did? others? There was noise on decel. Even after the lsd swap. not at first but very soon after.

Re: broke at pg project thread
I've broken a couple, whats nice though is you can just change the rear diff cover and the diff should still be good. I welded up a nice mount on the drivers side of the pinion to bolt to the diff. Basically just like the passenger side on the front of the diff but I welded it it solid to the sub-frame and bolted it up to the diff... No more flex.

here it is 525hp 425tq dumb ass launch. eclipsegst I do have another cover just need to get someone to remove a broke off cover bolt for me. and yes the bracket idea is on my mind. nick says he has a driveshaft for me just need to get to his house sometime. |

Re: broke at pg project thread
Ugh that sucks man! Hopefully its a quick fix and get it back on the road!
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
thanks to nick i will have the driveshaft thing figured out for sure. also having a spare diff cover is really cool. this time i deff want to have another bracket welded on to the subframe and mount my diff in 4 places instead of 3. i will also be looking at all my bushings for the diff as now imho its just not smart to use the factory settup with the limited supply abd cost of parts.

Re: broke at pg project thread
Oh yeah... Diff should still be good! Just find a new cover and clean it up good! I've done this a few times before. haha
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
Holy crap! What causes a diff cover to break unless the ring gear goes through it?
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
Horsepower and traction. Haha.
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
hey i did the same thing! but mine was just a axle and it was my first launch on qtp slicks.. luckly someone brought a spare axle and i was able to get it swapped out quick! my best time was 11.41 at 118 with a 1.55 60ft heres my carnage http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/v..._Brokeaxle.jpg

Re: broke at pg project thread
lol hells yeah this will be the third diff cover for this car. 425tq on db dyno and hella sticky track. diff looks fine I will clean it out and put a new cover on but this time I am going to buy the brackets so I will have four mounts for the diff. I will also have to check the bushings out. new driveshaft and I should be good.

Re: broke at pg project thread
So I have been thinking pretty hard about selling my 2.4 short block. It's very bad ass but I was thinking of making a diff. kind of beast. Anyways I decided to change oil and check a few things out. I noticed a gold sparkle to the oil wtf. so I pulled the pan and big time metal in my pan now nooooooo. So i started pulling rod caps and everything looks great, cylinder walls looking good from below as do pistons from what I could see. So I decided to pull the main girdle and yup there it was fuggin thrust bearing was looking pretty burnt as was my eagle forged crank. looks burnt and can feel with my nail. the rest were not as bad as the thrust, but had damage none the less. I never noticed anything wrong. We just dyno the damn thing and made plenty of power. So I will be pulling the short block and it will be decision time. rebuild? or new motor? http://i1063.photobucket.com/albums/...6-30020724.jpghttp://i1063.photobucket.com/albums/...6-30020801.jpg

Re: broke at pg project thread
Nice work 90
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
90? Either way I think this is a case of having an engine built and reusing things without properly cleaning or just reusing things that should never be reused. or maybe engine builder. Done at archer's. maybe the kid before me fed it metal for breakfast idk. chattery clutch all I can do is speculate.

found some sparkle in the oil and heres where im at. got the head off and everything actually looks pretty good so far. i will pull the rest tonight
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
ok 2 days later and everything is out. no matter how hard i tried I still ended up with a bag of bolts. I was happy to see the rods and pistons are absolutely perfect. head and cams looked good. I am getting a good deal on another 2.4 block and crank, but I really wanted to go 6 bolt 2.0. Oh well for now I can build on a budget and still end up with the same engine I had and save some money. If I get this thing going by pg2 I will be very happy...

Re: broke at pg project thread
should have my next crankwalk block and crank tomorrow. I will be sure to reuse all the parts that had metal shavings back in my new block just like the moron I got my car from. I have a hard time understanding why someone would spend 6k on a rebuild just to reuse a few hundred dollars worth of new parts but neither here nor there. I can't wait to get started on this build

Re: broke at pg project thread
i now have a block and crank to try out. need to do some measuring now

Last picture = WIN. lol

Re: broke at pg project thread
That's your problem right there. A severed human head in the engine bay is known to cause problems on these cars.

Re: broke at pg project thread
thought a good tuner like shane would have found that on the dyno lol...figured you guys would like that one...

i sent in my garret 3582r in on the exchange program. 550 for a new chra. so i will be running that... seems like a good turbo. with shaft play surge and bad crank and bearings on the block shane made 525hp 425tq uncorrected. it was 611hp 496tq shootout mode...all that at 30lbs. there was also surge around 26/27 lbs.

Re: broke at pg project thread
Ah gotcha very nice.
|
Re: broke at pg project thread
thanks man...well i talked to jeff from fuel systems in wi today and he said he will be shipping the turbo tomorrow so bummer next week will be
