2006 Yamaha R1
I'm bored so figured I'd make a thread on my bike as it makes it easier to look back when stuff was done and track progress.
My dream bike growing up was always some sort of black liter bike and being Yami fan I picked up my '06 R1 in June 2012. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...19017416_n.jpg When I bought it it had most of the basic mods I wanted done to it already. Mods when picked up: Solo seat cover Tinted Windscreen Full Akrapovic exhaust GTYR Filter Power Commander PC3 Tuned on pump gas Intergrated tail light Flush mount front turn signals Cool red/black grips Swing arm mounted plate bracket Black Adjustable levers Red Corbin Seat Rode it for most of the summer without any big mods http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...A/c03c3324.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...81279048_n.jpg Around July I had the urge to go to the track so I ordered up a PMR kill switch and Schnitz Racing lowering strap brackets and a lowering strap. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...05344896_n.jpg I think I ran some mid 10's nothing real impressive but got hooked again. Rode it around some more, went through a few tires, installed a radar detector, and rode it out to Sturgis. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y202/C3L1CA/spazy.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...02289572_n.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...A/864e7b25.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...A/19378d06.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...42508481_n.jpg Eventually I wanted to get every little bit out of it so I got mirror block of plates, double buble windscreen, stomp grip, 520 chain conversion with +1 rear sprocket, quick shifter, smog block off plates and eventually a small nitrous kit. Mid tear down for nitrous and block off plate install: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...151811_HDR.jpg "jet" location: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...152552_HDR.jpg After nitrous is kind of hidden from the front http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...923_183708.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...183635_HDR.jpg Cute little 2.5lb bottle next to a full size 10lb bottle http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...221725_HDR.jpg Dyno: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...925_183232.jpg Went to the track after the nitrous install but the plastic nitrous line fell out and wasn't spraying so kind of a bummer. Wanted to get the most out of it so I ordered an extension kit and a drag radial and went back to the track with a bunch of style guys. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...128_222748.jpg Best pass to date http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...208_144629.jpg This weekend I ordered up an adjustable kick stand and lowering links to help get a better launch. I also plan on getting some more aggressive gearing as well. Still tring to debate if I should go with an air shifter or a bigger nitrous kit which would let me run a solid 50rwhp shot with race gas. Hopefully you guys don't mind a bike thread on 'style!:VP2: |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
That trap is sick, you need to get out and run some big dogs this year instead of picking on us little guys.
I like the thread. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Seen this in person. Nice bike! Needs some boost!
|
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
We need some more bikes in this forum. What bike did you have before this? I think I remember you having an r6 raven?

Yep I had a raven r6 before this which I traded for a super moto at the beggining of 2012. I had the super moto, R1 and my gsx for a while which was a cool to have 3 cool vehicles. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...65941745_n.jpg |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
^That makes 2 of us, I know of some people that might be good, probably off the bottle though.
|
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Gahhhh this thread is making me wish I still had a bike lol. I might have something worth picking on this summer
|
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
I like it buddy, nasty trap speed!!

Talked to a few local tuners and they all said my nitrous setup should be just fine to spray a bigger shot at it without upgrading. So I'll order up air shifter stuff tonight, new nitrous brackets to mount the bottle in the swing arm, new sprockets and bigger nitrous jets since I lost all of mine! Order up a clutch this week too as the stock one shouldn't have lasted as long as it did and maybe some velocity stacks if I feel like blowing money. Then the bike will be done as far as anything I wanted to do to it besides maybe a gas cap and head work if I ever win the lottery. Lets see how deep into the 9's I can get this pig:spin: |

I could have bought two nice rockets for what I have wrapped up in the talon. Or I could have built one hell of a turbo busa! I def miss my busa lol |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
MMMmmm turbo busa! I've always wanted to ride a turbo bike, I would imagine that has got to be a bad ass feeling
|
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Yeah the only way to describe that thing was stupid lol. It was awesome! On 7psi it made 230hp at the wheel. I never had any good races with it though. I want another one bad lol. If you ever have the chance to ride one definitely take it!
|
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
That is an awesome bike! Gives me the itch to get a bike again, but sadly I dont think it will happen.

Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
It was stretched 6in and lowered 3in. It wouldn't wheelie but would roast the tire through first and second if you wanted to lol. I think you should talk to Richard at RCCturbo and have him build you a kit for the R1!
|
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
That'd be pretty crazy! I'd love to go turbo but maybe on a bigger bike like a busa some day. I'd still like to have this bike be able to go out and hit the twisties in a day or two worth of work.
Did you ever get your bike tuned anywhere in the cities? I talked to Turbo Todd he seemed pretty cool but I'm leaning more towards Bill "Hitman" from MC Dyno Tech. He said he wanted me around during the dyno to help drain the tank for race gas and can switch out jets and stuff which most people might think is dumb but I want to learn and be hands on which I think is cool. Too bad Shane extranomeatpimpinainteasy Ziegler doesn't want to tune nitrous bikes :( |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1

Too bad Shane doesn't tune bikes is right! That was the first thing I thought when I got the busa lol. But after dealing with Todd a little bit a seeing how much he knew about turbo bikes I felt comfortable with letting him work on the busa. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Quote:
Ohhh really. Yea I think he used to be hitman motor sports. What kind of stuff? Maybe shoot me a PM with bad things if you don't want stuff public. Yea Todd is at midnight cycles in Muderapolis right by all those biker bars near Augsburg. Those are really the only two guys that got back to me about tuning a nitrous bike. Hmmm when I went to go talk to Todd he did have a bunch of quick car/bike guys in there so he must know what he is doing. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1

Plus everyone on zg and mnsbr recommended Todd for a turbo bike. I mean hell he had a busa making over 700hp if I remember correctly. So he knows what he's doing. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
That's not good to hear, maybe I just feel like Hitman is a better sales man. I guess I still have time to decide. I'm just glad both said to keep with my fogger setup over a spray bar like everybody says on the forums.
Ordered up half my air shifter stuff from grainger. PN #: 5ZEE4 - Air Cyl 5THR1 - Rod clevis 6JJ52 - Solenoid Need to order a regulator to regulate the nitrous pressure down to a 120psi, a switch and a few fittings/lines and should have an air shifter on the cheap :) |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Indeed! You could ask around on mnsbr and zg maybe things have changed.
You going to run a kill box with the air shifter? |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Not to thread jack or anything. But brad or 4seasons do you guys know of any cheap/good shops to do fork seals and a couple other small things ? Don't want to go to tousley or hitching post there a joke , 07 kawi Zx-6r

Re: 2006 Yamaha R1

I have a quick shifter from power commander so i should need a kill box. At least thats what I'm thinking. Just going to run a crude setup first off the starter button and see how it works. Quote:
Only place I've really heard of for suspension stuff besides tousley/hitching post. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
I was going to say 2k or you could try midnight cycle I'm pretty sure they do everything there too

Such a fun trip! I always knew when your radar would go off because you'd either back way off if we were under 100mph. Or shit can it out of sight if we were over 100mph  We need to sponser a trip for Brad to Isle of man Quote:

Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Hitman has a good record of blowing shit up. I have heard a hand full of storys of bill screwing custmors over. I would just stay away from him. You better run some 8s this year. What you doing for gearing

Ordered a 16t front sprocket and 48t rear sprocket which is -1/+3. Should help get it out of the hole a lot better. Some guys were saying they ran -2/+3 which just seemed crazy. Also ordered a bmc race filter too. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
I got bored a few days ago so I did a comparrison of time slips.
Left is my best that I ever had with no spray and not extended. Right is my best pass from the last track day with a 35 shot and it was extended. If I can get that 60' time down the bike should be able to be a decent amount quicker. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps27d07bbc.jpg Pulled it out of Paul's shed this past weekend and really makes me miss riding it around. Needs to stop snowing and warm up asap! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps54d39466.jpg I also found a good deal on velocity stacks so I have some Graves velocity stacks to install once it warms up. All I really have left to order is the new bottle bracket but I haven't ordered that yet as I'm a cheap ass and haven't decided if I want to try a bigger shot and go with race gas or just leave it as it sits. I hate paying for shipping twice haha. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Installed some graves velocity stacks, bmc race filter and new spark plugs a few weeks ago and took her out for a little ride this weekend.
I also got a chance to put on my rearsets after having them powder coated black by powder keg. I also had Tim coat my passenger pegs, adjustable kick stand and new bottle bracket. Parts look amazing, thanks powder keg!! Plan is to get the lowering links and new kickstand installed tomorrow night then mount the bottle in the swing arm to see what lines I need to order. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps2902d97f.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psc326a570.jpg Going to try and make it to the first sport compact day at rock falls on the 21st. Hopefully I can get all the crap installed and tuned by then |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Nice.
|
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Looks good! Let me know if you're going to make it to Rockfalls I'll probably come out and spectate

Installed my lowering links last night, install was a lot easier than I though. I ended up using a car lift to raise/lower the tail which made it super easy. An engine hoist would've worked too but that was outside in the cold/snow haha. Lowering links weren't too extreme, just an inch and half or so. Was going raise my forks in the tripple tree too but my stock steering dampner wouldn't work anymore. Might just try riding it around how it is for a while and see how it feels for daily riding. For the track it'll be strapped hard anyways so I think I'll be set at the track. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psade28cfc.jpg Also started installing my adjustable kickstand but didn't seem to line up how I wanted it to. Going to try looking at it again tonight after work and see if I can get it to work better, might have to drill a new hole to mount it as it currently hits my shifter on down shifts. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps4dd6d92a.jpg ^This is also my plan on how to wire up the nitrous so I have it all in one place. Really want to wire in the LED so I know that I'm spraying and the map switched but might be further down the road as I really just want to go to the track. |
Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
I like the N2O wiring, pretty sweet setup! Can you rig up 3 LEDs? One on the horn toggle so when you flip it to be the N2O trigger it lights orange (i.e. armed). Then one for N2O flow and one for the map switch? 2 greens means you're good. Adding the orange armed light might complicate things though I guess, you got the switch already and know what it does.

Just got approved for 2 weeks off in August for a trip out to CA. Plan is to take the bike so I don't think I'll be pushing my luck with a bigger shot of nitrous until after the trip haha. |

Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Finally got around to installing the new bottle mount, air shifter and re-wiring everything this weekend. Seemed like the biggest pain but glad it's done and like the way it turned out.
Ended up taking off the tank to run the new nitrous line and run some wires. Felt like I was going backwards for such an easy install haha http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps3952db2f.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps1e8a1c48.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps3a5de332.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps8e8af210.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...pscdf403be.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psf3a7977c.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...pse7f507be.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps2c099e6e.jpg |

Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
I found a 6266 suby you can walk, I get the feeling they would turn it up once you go around them the first time.

Re: 2006 Yamaha R1
Got a chance last week to get out and test the air shifter and new nitrous wiring. Everything seems to work and the air shifter is pretty cool and fun to use. Also got my medical forma filled out to make my passes to get my nhra license.
All thats left before hitting the track is an oil change and a tune once the weather warms up a bit. Got the bike all cleaned up for some rolling shots this weekend and snapped this pic with my phone. Cant wait to go racing and warm weather! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps0a2249a0.jpg |
