project grandpa!

Sooooo i just picked this up

04 Mercedes E55 AMG

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...37176786_n.jpg

and it is pretty neat. Has lots of luxuries i'm not used to and a crap-ton of power anytime you touch the go pedal.

These things are supercharged so they're quite modable as well!

Very nice. I imagine these ride unreasonably smooth. What's your plans with it?

Re: project grandpa!

Thanks dudes!

I dont really have any plans for it besides it being a really nice DD. I am indeed going to winter drive it.

It could use some tint and maybe some wheels.

Re: project grandpa!

You have to forgive me, being on here I see the mitsu stuff rust pretty good and I rock my honda that you can measure the rust increase by day almost, however my wifes 2005 has hardly ever and that thing has a ton of miles put on it.

I forget newer stuff is better protected esp. a benz versus civic.
how much power does it have? 1/4 miles est?

You have to get some pics of the baller type stuff in there!

Re: project grandpa!

They ran mid 12's bone stock IIRC. I've wanted one of these for quite a while, super nice car. Congrats?

Super Bleeder!! 11-18-2012 07:51 PM

Re: project grandpa!

Yea, i mean i'd really like for the car to stay in great shape. But i also like driving it, so not driving it for 6 months seems dumb. Its not a Lambo! Also like you said, nicer vehicles tend to have better rustproofing it seems. My 1995 SC400 has seen a bunch of winters and its still not rusting.

Motorwise they are rated at 470hp and they tend to dyno around the 404-420 range. They ET in the mid low 12s and trap anywhere from 113 to 118. Some guys have slapped drag radials on bone stock ones and gotten high 11s. Oh and it weighs something like 4200lbs lol.

I'll shoot some pics of it when it shows up! My dad is driving it across the country for me cause he's retired :)

Sweet action! And yea throw some snows on it and it will do fine in the winter. It wont rust out either like honduhs. Germans metals are superiors.

Looks awesome!

Looking forward to more pictures once it gets back.

Is upkeep really as expensive as everybody makes it seem? That always scared me away from getting a benz

Yes, if you have it done at the dealer, parts aren't terribly ridiculous and obviously we all do our own work. There wouldn't be much to do to this, they are bulletproof.

Nice! Is it modded at all? If not, what plans do you have to do so? :)

How many miles?

These things are NICE and FUN! RWD goodness.

The drivetrain is really solid. The engine has a timing chain thats good for a very long time, and it doesn't have any really complex bits. The tranny is solid and is rated at something like 750 lb/ft.

The weakness is in the air ride suspension. Each corner has its own airbag and given enough time they will most likely start to leak. It used to be a huge deal because 1 new strut from MB was like 1200 bucks. Now there is a company that rebuilds them for ~400 per corner with a lifetime warranty.

Nope it is bone stock and it will probably be that way for awhile. I was totally happy with the way it drove. But maybe someday i'll get the itch!

I'm looking forward to racing people who dont know what these cars can do haha.

I feel like i should get a funny plate that says something like GRANDPA.

edit- another fun fact. No oil dipstick! You check it via a sensor in the oil pan (wtf) But there is a dipstick available and its considered a "special too.l" I bought one anyways!

No because thats a C-class which is quite a big smaller. This is an older version of an E63 :)

MB model numbers have always confused the shit out of me. It should be simple like BMW.... or they should name them. Too many CL,C,M,E,K plus numbers?! F that!

Re: project grandpa!

There is no older about it, they made E55's and E63's at the same time.. they were just different AMG engine options.

Their naming isn't difficult.. letters are the shape/model, and number is the engine size. Similar to BMW, who's first number is the shape/model, and the following is their engine size/model.

Actually they didnt make em at the same time brosif. E55s stopped in 06 and the E63 started in 07.

Also the engine size number scheme is dunzo! The new "63" cars are mostly 5.5L twin turbo v8s, but they didnt want to downsize the number on the car because they figured people didnt want to buy a "lesser" car even if the new engine was more powerful (a LOT more) and more economic to boot!

Interesting, I stand corrected. Didn't realize they had the same shapes in different Merc's, but upped their top engine offered in the AMG series in newer years. I still like the 55's better due to easier modding/hp adding.

Re: project grandpa!

Yeah their body code is the letters the car model carries but it is still confusing.

http://www.autoevolution.com/mercedes-benz/

Look at all the different models you could own. Each with their own engine or few engine choices.... Plus some models have different lettering to indicate different things sort of like a talon being a Tsi and whatnot... not worth digging into.

Got a ride in one of those with a professional driver at a MB event at Canterbury. Thing goes pretty good and drifts well. Tons of power every where and very nice interior. I subsequently got kicked out after finding the traction control button on the C320 and drifting it around the course. The crowd cheered when I got out of the car though! :D

Do it! Drive it somewhere dry though cause in this wet crap the car will literally never stop spinning the tires.
