Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Hey all-
I've been a long time lurker and occasional poster on this site and I figured it was about time I started up a project thread of my own. I've been playing with DSMs for about 7 years now and I'm finally moving on to my dream project (an awd spyder). Unfortunately I recently graduated from college and got my first “big boy” job as a software engineer, I also purchased my first house, so I don’t have as much car time as I once did. That’s enough of the boring stuff, here is the Evo I sold to fund this project: http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG0383.jpg This is the 98 Eclipse Spyder Gst that I will be using as a money pit for the next few years (sorry about the crappy cell phone pictures): http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1054.jpg http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1055.jpg http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1057.jpg The car made the trip back from Mille Lacs without any major issues despite the wealth of problems I knew of when I purchased the car. This spyder was totally stock and in pretty good shape. Rust was my main concern when I was searching for the perfect spyder. It goes without saying, but this one has NONE. http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1062.jpg By the time I got the car home, I was already sick of fwd so I decided to start looking for a good 5-spd awd donor car with the lsd rear or course. After a couple days of looking I ended up buying a really clean 95 Eagle Talon TSI AWD (almost a shame to rip this beauty apart): http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/a...-05_125637.jpg http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/a...-28_175035.jpg |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
That talon looks really clean too! Should be a fun project!
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Nice. Did you do the awd conversion? Anyway if still and ever want to get rid of the stock rims ill take them off your hands.
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Looks good man! Shame to rip that red one apart but I'm sure it has its own issues :)

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Thanks guys, it’s been a fun project so far. Yep, you are correct scheides the talon had plenty of issues and this thread will be used to track the awd conversion and the addition of many go-fast parts. I will be making a for sale thread and yes I would be willing to sell the chrome Spyder rims and tires feel free to send me a pm.
Here is my progress so far: This first pic is where the Talon/Eclipse will be staying for the next few weeks: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1091.jpg Here I popped the awd rear subframe out of the talon: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1094.jpg Next was the rear subfame and gas tank on the Eclipse: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1111.jpg Here are the two gas tanks side by side: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1112.jpg After all these parts were out and moved aside it was time to drill out what felt like a hundred spot welds and prepare to weld the awd driveshaft brackets into the spyder: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1117.jpg Then I stripped the spyder frame down to the metal so I could do some welding: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1118.jpg |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Make sure when you are welding those pieces back in you have the driveshaft in place. When I did mine the rear one was not on the correct spot.
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Lol, I meant to say if you are doing the AWD conversion yourself. It appears that you are :) pm sent.
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
will be a fun project. I had fun making mine awd back in 2000
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Wow you did yours in 2000?
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Like a Boss !
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Unfortunately I already welded the rear mount before I read your comment blageo23, I checked about 10 times to make sure it was all lined up. Fingers crossed.
Well, since the awd swap is going so nicely I decided to buy my car a little "treat". It is a built 2.3 6 bolt with wiseco forged pistons, crower rods, acl race bearings, and arp hardware. http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMAG1130.jpg |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I got the 7 bolt out, now I just need to gather a few more pieces and drop my built 6 bolt in.

AWD gas tank mounted:

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Wow, looks good.
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I picked up a few parts to get me through the built 6 bolt swap...

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I think it's about time for an update.... This project has been sucking up all my time but has been progressing quickly.
Oil port mod since I will be mounting the 2g head on my built 6 bolt block. http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps9e6724e9.jpg Assembled 2.3 stroker shortblock with ARP's: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb7a02ac1.jpg Assembled longblock (no the timing belt wasn't tensioned yet...): http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps251d710b.jpg Aaaand it's finally time to toss it back in (AWD trans mounted): http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps72efec61.jpg |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I also parted out the talon... I couldn't believe the amount of interest in dsm parts in the Minneapolis area. Literally everything of value sold.
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...psca5feb56.jpg http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps4b7521b0.jpg I scrapped the remainder of the car, it was definitely nice to get my garage space back! |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I also took some time to to replace the lower ball joints, as you can see they were in great shape :/ ... I'm surprised I even made it home with all 4 wheels attached after looking at one of them.
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...pse2a05811.jpg I also took the time to rebuild all of the axles, made a mess of the beer pong table. http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...pse95e6f2e.jpg |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Nice progress!
Maybe I missed it but what turbo did you end up getting and have any power goals in mind? Should be a sweet build once you're done with it! |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Dropped the new engine in:
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...psf1ddf11f.jpg Mounted the AWD driveshaft: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps96fbf47c.jpg After wiring up the 6 bolt CAS and connecting the various sensors, belts, exhaust, etc. it was FINALLY time to fire up the beast!!!! It started right up and idled smoothly on the first twist of the key. So I started the break in process with a spirited drive to the gas station: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...psafb8f82b.jpg I have since put about 50 miles on the car and have not come across a single issue. I did a compression test and came up with ~175-178psi in each cylinder so I think it's time to toss more money at it (so I can go pick on some corvettes). |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Nice work.
What is your setup? |

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm Depressing, I know... I do have a 20g from an old project which I planned on bolting on but plans have since changed and I am considering purchasing an fp green xl. I am looking to make a fun ~500hp weekend car. I am very open to suggestions if anybody has any! |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
That sounds badass, the only suggestion I would say to do is pick the smallest turbo for your goal, it will help keep the powerband broad, be responsive and most likely the most fun.

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
This looks like a fun project! Black AWD swapped Spyders are tits.

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Really think a 20G will get you to that 500 level?
You should have just bought Blageo23's black AWD spyder!! :P |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Should get him there on a dynojet
|

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Haa the fun is in driving it and not building it. Jk, are you wanting to keep it a bolt on mitsu flange or t3 maybe?
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I can't remember exactly, but maybe 6-7 years ago at LSE I made low 300's on my 50 trim bolt-on setup. Maybe 330 or so, something like 23psi. Horseshit tune on e85 with those regrind DKS 272's. So what's that maybe 375 dynojet? I'd imagine 500 on a 20g would be a bit of a challenge.
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I agree. a 5858 variant would be perfect on that car and capable of 600whp even, you would have to talk to MAP or whoever to see about something that tops out at 550whp.
They do sell a 3431E turbo thats rated to 550 even then I'm sure it would do more. |

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
20g and billet used together does not compute for me.
|
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
^then you need to do some reading turbo lab makes great billet 20g's you can even get extended tip billet 20g wheel
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater this guys running a turbo lab 50trim(same as a fp green) these are great numbers for low boost, hes also fwd i know that makes a diffrence but no that much. *Edit* let the flaming and hating begin i can vouch for the turbos i have been running once for almost a year with no issues.. |

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
My 20G back in the day topped out at 395 FWHP on Elite's Dynojet at 24 psi and race gas. With today's better ECU control and E85, I would think you could probably get ~430 whp out of a regular old 20G.

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
I'm still breaking the motor in, I have almost 100 miles on it now (haven't had much time due to furnace issues I've been dealing with + a week in Vegas) but no major issues have popped up yet. I did have some lifter tick so I installed some 3g lifters:
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps1d57b90a.jpg http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...psa8cbff69.jpg |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
Well the lifters didn't fix the tick/faint knock I was experiencing so I decided to pull my rod bearings and check them out in case a bigger problem was developing. They looked fine, so I'm still investigating.

Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
The headlights were in kinda rough shape:
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps71f13d2d.jpg http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps202a8742.jpg They probably could have been wet sanded and buffed but I decided it would be easier to just replace them: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...psd0478363.jpg Since my front bumper was off I installed my vrsf intercooler/piping/greddy bov/dejon 3" intake pipe: http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps1c17f914.jpg |
Re: Kyle's AWD Spyder Project - Big Money
At this point it was time to cut the bumper (one of my least favorite jobs on these cars):
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps73bb1fd6.jpg Things seem to be coming along great. http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps369c1e34.jpg I am using my old tactrix 2.0 cable to tune the car (ecuflash/ceddymods/evoscan): http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb330beb1.jpg |
