Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

Since my paint looked horrible after the accident, I decided to try something new that I haven't seen anyone do around here.

If you aren't familiar with PlastiDip, google it. Its an amazing product. It is super easy to shoot, very forgiving when it comes to runs in the paint, and has minimal overspray. The best part about it - when you want to get rid of it, you just peel it off!

Here are the pics...

I absolutely love how it came out. It has a very weird flat black finish, but is slightly glossy at the right angle.

After today, I am definitely thinking about painting the GenCoupe. :)

Interesting results, I've thought about doing a few pieces here and there, be curious for wear and tear updates.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

I did the front grill and side view mirrors a couple of weeks before the Cookout. No one noticed them, but they took some bug splats, and cleaned up nicely.

They say it can withstand high temps and the cold we get here in the winter. I'm curious how it will hold up through the winter.

Very nice. I did the engine bay of the Evo last summer. Also did the rims on the Spyder. The stuff works great.

Peal roof, Gloss black roof would be nice to, and the window trims. Looks good. Please don't do the gen unless it's white. :)

Do they make white? Does it finish like a matte? Looks good perfect for a beater.

It is literally insane to watch it dry. It looks bubbly, it looks uneven when painting the 2nd coat on top of the first. But it dries completely even and flat.

They do make white, and there are a bunch of different colors available now. Check out dipyourcar.com

Looking good!!

I love that stuff! I've done the wheels and chrome trim on the mini, and I've also done the mesh grills on the Evo. It seems to hold up really well so far! I can't say I haven't thought about doing one of our cars all the way like this, some of the colors are pretty cool!

what did you have to do to the chrome to make it stick to it. It is hard to make paint stick to chrome. And if it hold up to rocks chips on wheels I am thinking about about doing the 1g and the sentra both. It looks nice thoe and is it a single stage paint.

Just wash the trim good, and spray it. Simple green works well on the wheels as a pre wash. I've read if you do a car your supposed to wash it with dish soap before to get the wax off.

White does not work. It is more clear with a little white in it. People have Reyes it Nd it does not turn out.

Out of the spay cans
Black
Red
Work the best

I think if you get the premixed gallons from dipyourcar the white and other colors seem to work. I've seen some pictures of flat white dipped cars that look pretty sweet.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

That's what I want flat white. Can I shoot the pre mixed gallon out of any guy or do you have to use theirs.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

The other problem I've heard with white is that it'll pick up brake dust and turn tan-ish, and you can't get it off.

polishmafia 09-11-2012 11:11 AM

Re: Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

I did mine with 2 gallons. Black on black is the easiest to cover.

The stuff out of the rattle can is fine for trim pieces and smaller stuff, but for a whole car you definitely want to use the premixed gallons and shoot with a gun.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

I really like how it looks. I want to either dip my car with the matte white or have it wrapped in Xpel Stealth film, to make it a matte silver, when I get back stateside.

I've found a few pics floating around the web of cars that were dipped with the white full car kits and it looks pretty awesome. IIRC one of them even started out as being black and it took a couple of coats but covered it fine.

They were selling our Control Spray unit on their website up until a month ago. They said Wagner developed the gun specifically for them, but that was not true. We sent them a letter and they have stopped selling ours. The plastidip has a very low flash point and that unit is not spark contained. They have another generic unit they are pushing now and I am sure that is not spark contained either. Make sure to use it in a very well ventilated area or you could cause an explosion from the fumes. An actual spark contained unit would not be very feasible to buy, they are a lot more money.

If you watch the latest video where he is spraying the GTR R35, he is using our unit still.

Tl;dr Be careful spraying, that shit might blow up.

Did my chrome grill and Toyota emblem(Sequoia) in flat black a couple months ago. Love this stuff.

Pat - A Wagner spray gun was the one used. Not the one that dipyourcar says to use.

The more and more I read about dipyourcar, the less I think of them. Poor customer service reviews are everywhere.

I bought the paint from dipyourcar, but I will not be ordering from them in the future. It took them almost a month to send me 2 gallons of black. They claimed they had a backlog of orders, but I had to call them after a week and a half because I didn't get any notifications to get the information.

A simple email with an update after a week would have been sufficient.

These guys sound super shady to me, and if I need to order more I will be doing that through a different supplier and thinning it out myself.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

What would a price range be to do this to a car?

What kind of prep work and is there any damage to the cars paint by doing so.

Reason I ask is this would be one of the best April Fools jokes and there is one person in mind that needs to get a well thought out prank.

So you can just peal it off afterwards and all is good?

Re: Plasti-Dipped the Mitsu

There is a site out there somewhere that will mix any color you just have to send them a paint code. I did my grill, got the dip from the home depot was super cheap and easy, grill still looks great to this day.

Seen a few threads about this lately, not bad. Thinking about doing my wheels since I can just peel it off if I don't like it.
