my new project

Well as some of you know I bought swiftys talon and since most of you already kinda know the car I wont go into too much detail about it other than what is currently going on with it and what I'm doing to it.

I bought the car figuring It I would be pretty set. It just needed to be tuned for new injectors and I'd have an awesome car to putz around in this summer. Well with the way my luck goes I'm about 90 percent sure something went wrong with the #3 injector (i'm going to have them bench tested to verify) and the cylinder pretty much ate it's self. they were brand new injectors too. I removed the cylinder head to inspect the damage. the cylinder head and piston were quite melted in cylinder 3 and one of the intake valves broke or melted off and did a number on the cylinder wall in cyl3.

Ok where I'm sitting now for the cylinder head. I have a good core to have my parts swapped into and it will need new valves for cyl 3 and it will have to be machined for the over sized valves. I'm debating whether or not to have it ported and polished too.

As for the block I'm not sure if I can get away with just honing it out so I'm going to pull the block and bring it someplace (not sure where yet) to have it checked out and see what the best route to go with it is. Idk if you can have a 4g63 sleeved or if it's just better to bore it out and go with over sized pistons. I would like to reuse as many of the parts as I can since all the rods look good and 3 of the pistons should be reusable. In regarding the block if anybody who has some experience with engine building as any advice please feel free to chime in. It will be greatly appreciated

and then there is the turbo. a bunch of metal went through the exhaust and dinged up the turbine wheel pretty bad so it will at least need a new exhaust wheel and a rebuild. depending on what ends up happening with the block I might look into upgrading to a billet version of the gt4294 or look into a gt4202/gtx4202

Sorry this is such a long post but that is kind of the short version lol

Congrats on the new purchase! Perhaps maybe it will see the track now. Lol

As far as a place to bring it to get looked over. Motors by gosh is a good place. There located right next to DB.

Are those the FIC 2150s? I've heard they were having issues but I can't remember what the issues were.

Good luck with the car

It will see the track eventually lol but I just hope to get her back on the road sometime this summer but we'll see I guess. Yes they are fic 2150s. I'll have to look into what kind of issues they're having with them

All I could fibd for failures doing a quick goggle search was that of storage. If they were not stored properly and cleaned water could get in causing irreversible failure.

Could have dropped a valve or broke a valve and have all that happen too.

thats good to know. Im not sure if they were put in last fall or this spring but I know he got them from someone on here brand new unopened in the box.

That would make sense too. I guess I was leaning towards the injectors cause after it came off the dyno it was never beat on and I was just cruising when it happened. Im also leaning towards the injectors cause if you look at the picture of them you can see that 3 are starting to get dirty from the E85 and one still looks brand new. The one that still looks new was the one in the cylinder thats messed up and since its still so clean (I could be wrong) I would assume it wasn't flowing enough fuel. Im going to get them bench tested asap so I know whether or not the injectors are good

4seasons69 08-03-2012 03:03 PM

Re: my new project

Here's a little update of where things are sitting right now. I finally was able to get the injectors bench tested and they tested good. The flow and pattern are basically identical on all of them. So it's looking like its just a broken valve that's the culprit.

The shortblock is up at MAP right now being built. Had to get a new block, front cover, then we're putting different pistons in it (wiseco hd's), we're reusing my crank and rods, and putting a main girdle in it too.

It will still probably be a few weeks until I get it back then the head will be going to the head shop.

A little update on the car. I got my shortblock on Monday. It's a MAP stage 2 with a kiggley main girdle. So i can concentrate on the head now. I'm not 100 percent sure what route I want to go with the head yet. I'm going to order a rebuild kit for the twin disk then the shortblock will be going back into the car. It will be nice to finally be able to do some work on it.

Looks like the carnage I experienced when I had a valve fail too. I was gently cruising at 50mph when it happened to me. Never did figure out the reason why but valve failure was the only yhing that made any sense. The stock valves are a 2 piece design, so I guess it could be possible.

Good luck getting her back up and running.

Lol very similar I was cruising at 60. Mine weren't stock valves though. Now that I got the shortblock the hard parts over should be up and running before it snows. Then tuned and driveable next spring

Re: my new project

I dropped the cylinder Head off at the head shop this morning and they said they think a valve seat dropped and that's what caused the valve to break. They also said that every valve hit a piston and is bent. Not sure what happened there either.

Yeah idk everything swiftys told me about the engine that was in it seems to have checked out for the most part. He said he got the valves from Brent Rau so either the valves were bent when he got them, it was mistimed, or the cams were degreed wrong or the cam gears slipped. Idk lol. Pm me and elaborate on what you've heard if you don't mind.

Thanks! The head will be done this week or next. So just a few miscellaneous parts and and the the engine is going back together. The just need to get the cams redegreed and the engine will be going back in. It will be up and running sometime I am the next month or two. Then work some bugs out and get it tuned next spring and she'll be ready to rock

Ok so I got my head back from the head shop today. It's got ferrea springs and retainers, ferrea competition plus +1mm valves, it was ported and polished and port matched to the manifolds. I just need a head gasket and a few other things then I can start putting her back together. Here are some pics.

Thanks! And yeah assuming I don't run into any major complications like I did this summer it will see the track at least once :-)

Thanks! I'm pretty hell bent on getting this to the track at least once next year. I have no idea what kind of times I'd be able to run or how the t-case or rear diff will hold up but we'll give her hell anyways :-). If the car breaks again I better be at the track when it happens lol

You'll have to post up when you go!

You doing any other upgrades to it?

Yeah ill def post up when I go. I'd like to go when there's a few people from here going to.

As for upgrades the biggest addition will probably be the porting and polishing of the head. The block is completely different but I don't know if i would consider it an up grade. I did add a girdle to the block though. I'm toying with the idea of a different turbo. I'd really like a gtx 4294 or 4202 but idk if I want to spend 3k on a turbo lol otherwise it's going to basically be the same setup

Here's a little update. Works been slow so it kind of put me on hold for gettng parts but I finally was able to order a headgasket so once that gets here I can start putting things back together. Then I just need a clutch rebuild kit and I'm going to get an upgraded clutch fork and miscellaneous gaskets, fluids, etc. to get her installed.

I also think i got my turbo situation figured out. I can't justify spending what it will cost to fix my current turbo so right now I'm planning on going with a 67mm borg warner s400sx

Yup! Thanks for the heads up on bw I never would have thought about them. As for the turbo its the comp and turbine housings are the same as the 4294 I have now so my intake and exhaust will work with no modifications. The comp well is actually a little smaller but it outflows the 4294. Plus it's very reasonably priced! Not sure what a/r on the turbine housing I want to go with yet though

Re: my new project

The BW appears to be more durable but that's about it, otherwise slower spool and less power.

So this will be on the road come spring?

Idk about slower spool or less power. It's essentially one of bws versions of a gt42. All the info I can find on the turbo it seems to be a pretty wicked turbo. If you have any actual info on this not being a good option for me I would like to see it. I haven't purchased anything yet so am still open to options

turbotalon1g 11-24-2012 09:42 AM

Re: my new project

It's a fantastic option, I'm at work so i can't find the video, but sound performance tested a BW S3xx against the 6266 and the 6266 made more power, but the BW spooled up better.

On evom the supporters of BW stuff agree that the spool and transient boost with the BW turbo is superior to PTE but in sacrifice for max power.

I'd say get the BW stuff and not have any doubt about the turbo eating its face, worth the 30-40whp you might give up.

I'm just not a fanboy of it as I haven't seen anything but market hype for the ETT and EFR stuff.

Okay I gotcha. Yeah i like the pte stuff but their versions of the gt42 are 3k and their other turbos I'd have to have a new intake and exhaust fabricated. The BW is 1400 and seems to out perform the Garrett I have now. The BW just seems to be the best compromise of performance and price. Oh and yes it will definitely be on the road come spring time!

Heads up that the turbine housing are massive. I went with .91 divided t4 I think. Don't let the number deceive you, its just a ratio. Id bet if you put my .91 BW housing next to a larger number pte/garrett housing, you will see how much larger it is.
