Shari's 2009 Raliart
My wife(Shari) and I just currently purchased a 2009 Ralliart with a 6 speed automatic. Seems to be some rattling coming from the transmission. Sounds kind of like the common throwout bearing noise you hear on a 1g dsm.
Anybody have any knowledge of this transmission? Does it have a clutch or torque converter? Does this transmission have a normal planetary gear setup like an automatic or helical gears like a manual? Will post pics soon! |

Is it a knock? I know my friends Mr does this. |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Thank you for that post, that is the exact noise and that page describes exactly when it occurs. It sounds like it isnt an issue
I think it sounds likes a pretty sweet transmission from the information I have gathered. Im just glad it isnt a 6 speed hydraulic automatic as it would be a nightmare of a transmission stuffed into the car. Shari loves the car, especially since her previous car was a Kia Rio. The car is quite fun off of the line for having 237hp. |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
It's basically a baby Evo. It's time you do some research into the SST!
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Congrats on the car! What color and you need some pics!
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Ok I will get pics tonight hopefully. Its grey.
I have read up on the transmission, works similar to an eaton autoshift except more sophisticated. |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Turbo AWD conversion!

I am really considering one of these for my next DD...not sure if I could resist the mod bug on it though. Great pickup! |

Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
I have my stock evo x intercooler that would go nicely in that grill opening. :) .. I wouldn't call it modding but improving stock for stock. hehe
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
looks goood man.
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Is the X intercooler larger than the stock intercooler?
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Than the Ralliart one yes.

Well today has not been a good day for me and Shari. Shari was driving her Ralliart and she lost all movement. Transmisson seems toi be working as it goes through all gears. Unfortanatly it was put into park while transmisson was internally still moving and the parking pawl is not functioning so well anymore. While car is on 4 stands and rear parking brake are set, I had her hold a front tire while I turned the other. I shouldnt have been able to turn it with her holding it. Driveshaft was not spinnning so that rules out the rear differential. Drained the transfer case, fluid has slight metal flakes but nothing serious. Pulled the cover that you use to check pinion backlash, found no problems. Removed both front cv shafts and found no problems. Next step, going remove the transfer case. |

Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
I wonder if flat-bed drivers have a running joke about AWD Mitsus?
https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n..._6353289_n.jpg I'm trying to find a pic of my IX up on the flat-bed too, but I can't find it. |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Oh, fun game, mitsu on tow truck game!
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...o26/photo6.jpg Not a flad bed but close. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/12ea7225.jpg I have like 5 other instances of it being towed, I think they are on my home pc though and I am at work in north dakota. This is a fun thread idea i think, tow truck thread. |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Pretty sure we should have an official thread about this, lol
Sucky, I have heard rumors of this parking pin issue on the MRs but never known anyone that it happened to...I hope thats not what it is but if it is, how hard is it to fix/at least get rolling? |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
I beleive I found her problem. First one to guess what it is will be crowned king of Mitsubishi's for a day.
First clue, it plagued the drivetrain on 1gdsm's, maybe 2g's as well. |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Plagued 1G DSM drivetrains eh? Where do we start.
T-Case locked up? Tranny syncro's gone to shit? Shitty throw out bearing? Broken rear axle? DS carrier bearings? DS improperly alligned? 2-spider center diff broke? |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Xfer case rear seal? :D
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
It's a dsm now there are way to many problems with it. Best fix kill it with fire.
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
So far nobody is correct. Next clue, rust is involved.
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Fourth clue, you had to do a count before replacement.

Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Ok no more clues.
Pulled the transfer case out slightly from the transmission and a pile of powdered rust fell out between the transmission and transfer case. Found the splines of the transmission and transfer case completely dogged and rusted out. There are multiple splines/teeth missing from the transfer case and transmission. It appears here is supposed to be an o-ring on the transfer case housing to prevent water from contaminating the shafts, but the o-ring was not there. Since this is the first time it has been pulled on this car, it would appear this is an assembly fault by Mitsubishi. Will get pictures soon. |

Here is where Mitsubishi neglected to install a 2$ o-ring to properly seal water/rust contamination. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/CIMG2332.JPG Here you can see the teeth heavily worn from rust on the t-case. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/CIMG2325.JPG Here there is a pile of powered rust. There is actually more than what the picture is showing. There is alot more damage I cant get a good shot of at the moment. Specifically completlely missing teeth/splines. Its all stripped out and the repair probably will require a new t-case and new front differnetial in the transmission. |
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Oh man, that is no good :(
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
Who is doing the work on the car? Will Mitsu warranty it if they aren't the ones doing the work & finding the issue first hand?
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
It's out of warranty, I think she told me 103k miles on Facebook.
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
I am shocked it didn't leak, So bizzare.. Good news is you find a junk sst/ transfer case and you will be cooking with gas!
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
There are still oil seals on the transfer case and transmission to prevent oil leaking, but only that o-ring would have prevented water contamination between the transmission and t-case.
|
Re: Shari's 2009 Raliart
that is nuts! I've never seen that before to be honest. :(
