1991 eagle talon big project
so i picked up a nonturbo fwd talon shell pretty much perfect body.
swaped a turbo engine, the harness, ecu, exhaust, and gauge cluster into it from a running crap shell and now it isnt running right at all idk what happened in the process. i idles very low about 500-700rpms and sounds like its fireing wrong. it has a cop setup that was working before the swap. anyone some ideas before i call map?? |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Check all you wires and connection. Could be a bad ground. You getting enough fuel? Did you change ecus? Only way map can help you is if you bring it to them and have them work on it. Iam sure they would be glad to sell you some stuff. If the car ran fine before the swap and now it doesnt. Means you missed something or you fucked something up.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
yeah i checked all the wires and its the same ecu
how do i check to see if i have enough fuel?? i would be bringing it to them if i cant figure it out. |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Fuel pressure gauge. You could have bad gas. do you have a Check engine light? Do you know if you are getting spark on each spark plug? You getting correct voltage to the injectors?
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
ill check spark
actually it most likly is bad gas in the tank ill have to get a fuel gauge |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
It takes a while for gas to go bad, I'm driving around on last year's gas with no problems. E85 is a different story.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
oh and oil pump is leaking from the top bolt area now too...
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
So you did a complete turbo swap into a non-turbo car, you tell us it's not running well without much detail, and want us to diagnose the cause over the internet?
I say swap it all back to the turbo shell and see if it runs better :) |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
that wouldnt make a difference, i havent gotten into it too much wanted a place to start
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Make sure you have strong spark at each cylinder. Check fuel pressure at the rail. Make sure all the harness connectors are connected securely.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Did you swap fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator? Also, ditch the cop for stock ignition. Simplify things. Did you do the wiring for the fuel pressure solenoid and knock sensor? I found a page the other day with a complete list of what's needed, it will take forever to search for it on my phone though.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
i didnt do fuel pump or regulator wouldnt the stock ones be the same
and i have a turbo wire harness in |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
its most likly a fuel issue im thinking
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Regulators are different for sure. Nt ones are higher pressure. Could be your problem.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
sweet ill swith them right away and check it.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
well the regulator is switched and it helped some but still running bad.
map will be looking at it on 4/19/12 |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Did you do the fuel pump yet? n/a ones are smaller/flow less
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
when i did thr swap map never said i needed to switch that but if soo ill get it done
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Everything I have read says they are different. Like I said, just what I have read though.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Out of curiosity what year turbo ecu did you install, and was it the matching harness that you installed?
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
the ecu and harness were fine in the other car so its prolly fuel pump or something shitty
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
well i brought it to map and they have fixed the oil leak the fuel injector problem and did a few other tests and it still isnt working properly.
so its still at map and they will be working on it untill its running how it should be. then it will be my dd ill start by cleaning up the engine bay and doing some miner body repairs |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
so i have an important question i need answered is the cas the same from 1990 to 1994???
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
I would start over with this thread....
So you had a NT shell, swapped the ENTIRE chassis harness from the running shit turbo car into the NT shell? What years where these cars? Did you swap all the intercooler, fuel pump, FPR, injector resistor pack, MPI relay? You need to match the year ECU with the proper CAS, the pre 93 ECU will need a green top CAS, or the 90 CAS with the 4 wire pig tail, but a black top 93-94 CAS will not work with the older ECU, I am not sure if a 93-94 ECU will work with a older CAS. Also check your grounds, get on All DATA, or go to the library where they have wiring schematics, or something to double check every connection. If the 2 chassis were different years and you just swapped the engine bay harness I would guess you are having electrical issues up the wazoo. Good luck fixing it, but with out more info I am with Halon, swap it all back to the turbo chassis and see if it runs better. ~John |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
i never had a turbo chassie and im almost 100% sure its the cas issue so i think you just solved my problem
i have a new wire harness coming in and ill swap cas or buy a new one if mine doesnt work because i just got it back from map and they said everything is fine so they have no idea why it doesnt work they couldnt figure it out |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
You didn't need to swap the entire harness in the first place. All you need to add to the N/A harness is the resistor pack, and knock sensor. Seems simple enough, the knock sensor is one ground and one wire to the ECU

Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
well i did what modern told me to do
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
ok so i took out my maf and put in a gm maf and the maf translator thats set to all zero
the cal is running the best it has now id say almost perfect. but it will die if i dont keep giving it gas anyone have any ideas |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Ever check for codes?
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
no check engine light comes on but no i didn't.
idk for sure if map did or not but they said everything checked out ok! |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
So as soon as you give it throttle it wants to die?
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
no if i dont give the car gas it doesnt run.
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
Sounds like you maybe have pins 6 and 14 switched at the ecu and would cause this issue.
Look at pins 6 and 14 http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ecu-harness-1G.html |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
do you know a good amount about wiring in a 1990 1g?
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
so it wont go past 30 mph and runs shitty
i really need some help with wiring and a few other things if someone can come help ill pay them for there time |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
so i might need a new fwd tranny too
looks like mine is leaking for no reason now.. |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
See plenty help jst gotta ask right :) Switch that gas! Put in the pump and fpr if you haven't ...and don't ovrr look another boost leak down test...that custom set up you got is just begging to leak. Make sure that maf is adjusted right as well, I guess they can be tricky when it comes to driveabiliy verses idle. Once it runs decent remember the aecu must also relearn all its fuel trimms so gentle atleast that helpd on my car! Have Fun no rage quitting lol
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
I think I know someone with a tranny 2
|
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
well i cant do the wiring myself i tried
im trying to trade an awd tranny plus mine for a good fwd if possible i dont have a pmup yet either |
Re: 1991 eagle talon big project
so i just picked up a few things from a junk yard.
for 150 i got an ecu with dsm link with cable, 2g maf and pipe, 650cc fic injectors, nicer gauge cluster, new headlight cover, and a ss clutch line i think the ecu needs to be fixed though |
