GSXTACY

All,

I recently decided to sell my 2006 WRX wagon in favor of something more fun to drive and something that's cheaper (the principle reason of "cheaper" was because I'm going to be purchasing a duplex in 6-12 months). Many options were considered, but it needed to be AWD and it needed to be clean. I have been lucky enough to acquire somewhat of an urban legend around the Duluth/Superior area - GSXTACY.

Bryan owned the car for 12 years and, quite frankly, made it the best it could be. No expense was spared and everything was very carefully considered. Bryan bought the car with 10,000 miles on it! As of now, it sits at 94,000 miles. It has only seen 1 winter since Bryan bought it. It will now serve purpose as my ridiculous daily driver.

My intention with this thread is to document the subtle changes that I make to the car. From a performance standpoint, everything is going to stay as is - I have a 750HP LS swapped RX-7 for all out stuff. The car is getting tuned by DB 2 weeks from now and I'd like to see 450-550WHP on E85. I'm just going to work to clean up the bay (keeping in mind it has PS, AC and cruise), fix the minor body blemishes and "customize" the interior to my liking (just small stuff like a new boost gauge, new security system, new 21st century head unit, etc.). I'm a huge proponent of don't fix it if it's not broken, and this one certainly is not.

So, here's what we're working with:

1998 Mitubishi Eclipse GSX

Engine:
DSMlink version 3
2.4L (Eagle rods, Wiseco pistons, 8.8:1)
1G head (ported, polished and gasket matched)

Tial 44mm external wastegate
SFP exhaust manifold
Polyeutrethane engine mounts
ARP head studs
Felpro headgasket
Magnus intake manifold
RRE 3" downpipe
Apexi 3" catback
Setrab oil cooler
Apexi Skyline FMIC

Fuel:

Walbro 255LPH in-tank
Bosch 044 in-line
-8AN feed and return
Aeromotive FPR
Aeromotive stainless fuel filter
FIC fuel rails
FIC BlueMAX 1250cc injectors

Drivetrain:
Shep Stage 4 transmission
Shep 4 spider center differential
LSD rear end
PPT twin disk with Isuzu slave

Suspension:
Tein Flex with EDFC
RM front sway bar
RRE custom rear sway bar
Suspension Techniques bushings
13" Baer Claw brakes
Stainless steel brake lines
Rear strut tower brace
17" Motegi Tracklite (flat black)

Thanks for the comments guys. I have been around DSMs for a few years but beyond the common stuff (low end power combos, weak points, etc.) I don't know too much and I'm looking forward to the learning process. They're so much more complicated then LS engines :P

Here's the RX-7 (should be done and tuned within a month):

Re: GSXTACY

Thanks guys. Most people see my FC and say "shoulda got an FD" - so it's cool that you guys dig it. I love FDs and would like one some day, but CLEAN FDs are wayyyy too expensive for me right now. I like the boxy lines of the FC a lot.

Both of these cars are relative sleepers, which I like. Only if you know what you're looking for can you tell that there's anything going on with the drivetrain (with the RX-7 it's the Aerospace rear drag brakes and with the GSX it's the front Baer brakes)

With the 2.4 you can't even hear the cam lope in the GSX and the RX-7 has a baby cam with almost no lope.

FCs and FDs are badass in their own way. gorgeous cars I'd take both.

Agreed. Most FCs (like DSMs) are roached out but the clean ones are badass

Sooo which part of the car did you work on so I can double check torque specs? Lol, kidding...

I'm going to try and get GSXTACY plates for the car in MN. Not sure if they're available or not, guess I'll find out when I go to the DMV.

Cant wait to see what you do with it. I read your build thread on the FC over on mn sport. So Im sure you'll make this thing CLEANER! If possible.

Are you gonna ditch the cloth seats for some leathers?

Thanks. That was "build thread light" on MNSC. I have a better one here: http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=3609.0

I'm going to keep the cloth seats. I like leather but all of the DSM leather seats I've sat in are hard and slippery. These things are damn comfortable. Plus, I guess they're a little lighter, too, which I don't necessarily care about but it helps!

Re: GSXTACY

Good luck with the car Dave! One of the best around.

Funny thing about the cloth, those are actually my factory seats and I have the factory leather in mine from it. Man that car goes back years.

Also, the cam lobe, I degreed them in a few years back. Made all the difference in the world with that longer 2.4 timing belt and 2.0 cam gears.

Re: GSXTACY

I had a big long reply typed up yesterday but just as I was going to hit submit, the power went out! Grr.

Anyway, a buddy (and long time DSM'er) and I went out for a cruise on Friday night. He brought his laptop with so we did some logging and he starting changing a couple of things. All I'd like to say is that this thing HAULS ass. At 25psi we were flowing 52lb/min at 10:1AFR WOT and stock timing. We were going to start playing with fuel trims more and timing when my CEL came on. 236*F coolant temps and it was all because of this:

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...3/IMG_6938.jpg

That is the dry rotted plug that was capping the factory outlet on the water pump for turbo feed. It was clamped on and blew off right around the clamp.

First thing we thought was that the head gasket was toast. Got it back to the shop (towed) and ran a compression test cold - 165PSI on all 4. Ran it again hot and got 150PSI on all 4.

Drained oil - Ok, good, no coolant.

Replaced the plug:

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...3/IMG_6936.jpg

I filled it back up with fluid, got some fresh E and drove around pretty much all day yesterday. 213*F was the hottest I ever saw with average temps between 186-195*F.

All I have to say is I'm happy I didn't screw something more up with that stupid plug!

Oh yeah, and breaking loose in 3rd on a 25PSI brake boost is pretty interesting, too :loser:

Halon 04-08-2012 10:32 AM

Re: GSXTACY

Lol, so I'm assuming that new replacement cap is just temporary then until you can find a more permanent solution, so the same thing doesn't happen to you again in a year?

Yup. What is the accepted solution to this? There has to be something better...

DavidPHumes 04-08-2012 10:50 AM

Re: GSXTACY

Also I'm guessing I'd be fine for many years (I would bet that plug is 5-6 years old) but I hate when something so small and fragile can cripple the whole damn car.

Halon 04-08-2012 10:56 AM

Re: GSXTACY

On mine I had installed a Non-turbo housing. I feel like they came in a couple different variations though, and for some reason I still had one open port. It was threaded though so I bought a brass plug and plugged it.

It was a long time ago though, and my memory isn't so great anymore.

I don't think everybody has a TIG around, it's powdered aluminum.

DavidPHumes 04-09-2012 08:43 AM

I do not have a tig but I know a few people who do. That sounds like a pretty sage solution.

Re: GSXTACY

Has anyone here ever done HID retrofits into stock 2GB head lights? I have done them in other vehicles before (my RX-7 has them), just wondering what your thoughts are. I'm talking TSX style projectors. I don't have the time to do it right now so I'm wondering if anyone out there can do it for a fee...

Don't they already make projector headlights for 2g's?

Just cheap eBay projector/angel eye type AFAIK. They look bad on 2GBs IMO. I think they look OK on Talons though. If there's something out there I'd be willing to hear it. These headlights are just terrible though as they are.

There has to be somebody that has done it, maybe try looking on tuners.

I just have some HID's in stock 2gb housing. Light output looks pretty decent and although I don't think its the best for on-coming traffic as I've been flashed once or twice while driving at night.

I know there is, just wondering if any one on here has done it. I refuse to put HIDs in reflector housings... looks ricey IMO. Every time someone is driving in my direction with them I want to swerve into their lane and run them off of the road lol

I'm pretty anal though
