Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

I am starting to dive in to figuring out which turbo and exhaust manifold I am going to buy. I was going to make an exhaust manifold and still may, but time is tight right now. Price isn't a major concern, but cheaper is always better.

So far I am looking at a Shearer tubular manifold with Vband output to a 6262 BB in the ported S housing. The 6262 is a little bigger than I really need, I am only looking for 500 whp at DB. I doubt the spool of the 5862 would be much different though and their smaller exhaust wheels are not billet as far as I have seen. If the 5858 was a billet exhaust wheel I would probably go for that.

I am gearing my car to be a near daily driver and an all around car. I love a spool below 4k, but I should be around 4200 with this setup I think. Car is an 8.8:1 2.4, big cams, will have a SMIM, big IC and 3" IC piping, 3.5" exhaust running E85.

I have been looking at the Borg Warner turbos a bit too, but am leaning towards the 6262.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

The 5858 has the new CEA exhaust wheel and is rated to 620, PTE seems to be rating their turbos conservatively these days as well.

If that is your true goal the 5858 should do that on corn, however shane did tune a SCM5857 on a 2.3, I think at 30psi it did 500whp on a dynojet, but you still have boost to play with.

I would go with the 6262 they perform very well. theres a laser running around that made 500 at db. Hes running a 6262 set up with mild bolt ons.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

They changed that recently then? Their website says the 5858 has a CEA compressor, but regular turbine, as well as anything I could find online referring to it.

I'm "only" looking for 500whp hahahaha

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

For that power level, you don't need a tubular mani anymore, the FP cast mani and a Mitsu style turbine housing will do the trick with more reliability and less underhood heat. I was just having a few beers with Mike Rizzotti this week and he sold off his Shearer top mount and went back to the FP mani. He's still looking for around 600whp detuned. :D

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

I would call them and ask about what CEA exhaust wheels they have, I know they do a 5862 as well. I might of made a mistake about the 58 CEA being a turbine wheel, but I know I read somewhere they had it/coming out soon and that was a couple of months ago.

That would be if you really want to keep the response, but if I had to choose I'd do the 6262 but then you would probably have a 600whp capability if you wanted it.

If you do a FP mani, then for sure 6262, if T3 then maybe the 5858/5862

I had a PTE 5557 billet make around 480awhp my numbers with stock intake manifold.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

Could choose the knockoff version of the Turbonetics(T3) cast mani I have. With E85 they are great, but on gas they'll boost creep into the upper 20's psi.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

If you go the T3 route, this seems like a pretty sweet kit: http://www.maperformance.com/map-tub...p-dsm-tem.html

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

I vote 5862. With the 2.4, the bigger turbine wheel will do wonders.

That MAP kit looks nice, everything in one package!

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

T3 will be laggier and 62 exhaust wheel will be laggier, so depends on how much lag you want.

With the power cars make these days, "only" would be the appropriate term haha.

Think back 4-5 years ago, 500 wheel would be a pretty nuts street car. Now it seems there are more than a few running around.

If I was aiming for that power, I'd be all about keeping it simple myself. FP Manifold, some sort of bolt on turbo, etc. Pretty sure Kerry made ~550awhp at DB on a 2.4, FP mani, and SCM61 a couple years ago. He ou-tspooled my T3 S362 setup w/ SLS tubular mani, and made similar power.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

How about a FP Cast stock-placement maifold, FP HTA DSM82 bolt-on turbo and one of their custom o2 housings (or make your own?). Price is right and brad made damn good power on his old 2G:

That was on a stock 6-bolt too!

LOL, didn't even see this, great minds think alike :)

Lots of good opinions guys, thanks! This is making me realize that I am building too big. Either I should drop some of my stuff down a notch (probably don't need 3.5" exhaust or 3" IC pipiing either) or raise my hp goal. I'll have to do some more thinking, but pretty sure I am leaning towards a 5858 in a mitsu housing and FP cast manifold now. It will save me some money and should easily meet my goals.

I really don't see myself needing much over 500-550 whp, I had 460 before I sold my stuff and I thought that was a blast. That was on an old style SCM61 with stock intake manifold.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

^^ seams like a solid plan, keep it simple and you should hit the goals you want with that turbo. Do you have an intercooler and that stuff already?

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

I have a huge garrett core that I was going to make custom end tanks for. I may just sell it and get something with tanks on already and go a bit smaller there too.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

Oh right on. I was gonna suggest the vrsf speed kit. Works good, is cheap and a full kit.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

IF its a street car I'd recommend a ETS core.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

I had the 2.4, FP mani and 3575 and made 520 at Shane's. Great spool up, but looking back, I doubt if I would've lost anything going down to 2.5" IC piping and a 3" exhaust. Seems like people are making more and more with less, and most of us old guys are downgrading to something more fun on the street.

Just remind yourself that the bigger you go the more will/can break. Or the more likely you'll have to buy more expensive/possibly finicky components in order to handle to power. I'd lean toward taming down the plans and shoot for a more reliable/less headache path of 500whp.

There happens to be a race ETS core in stock at MAP, for a 1g. I love those damn cores, so nice. It's 3" inlet and outlet.

Re: Turbo/exhaust mani for my car

If I were to do my DSM again, I soooo would do the bolt on/fp race manifold route. T3 is a major pain in the ass from my experience, at least with a 1g. There are so many good bolt on turbos now days for almost everything it seems, that T3 is almost pointless unless you are shooting for 650+ HP.

I like your fp mani, 5858 (except for I only see the 5862 in a bolt on housing on their site?), etc setup. Sounds like a fun, faster spooling setup. :D

Cores that blast in to a flat wall like that drive me nuts! Map does have several other cores with cast end tanks that I want to check out. The vibrant ones have a nice design, but I want to see inside if they have a decent turbulator setup or not.

I agree Mo, I am going to downsize and go more reliable with better spool.

It's not completely flat, it usually has like a 3* taper :)
