AWD Spyder Project Thread
This summer was the first time I drove the car in about 2.5 years. It felt amazing. It made 567hp and 490tq at DB (corrected). It was super fun to drive for the month I drove it. One night after a rice killer meet we were getting on the freeway, I hit it and it started sputtering and finally stopped making power. FILLED the freeway with smoke, limped it to the next exit and to our destination and found it dripping oil near the turbo. Long story short the shaft snapped. Here is what the car looked like when I was driving it and what happened to the turbo..
Harness bar. Safe? Maybe only slightly http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/b22924e2.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/cab5eed4.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/ed3c925f.jpg (I told the DMV I lost my plate thats why there is a yellow sticker. Only did that so I could run with no plates and I Powder coated my old ones black to blend in with the car.) http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/aa2b2d5e.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/463ba3fd.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/1feaade6.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/667c1b27.jpg Now the plans for this year: To get the thing back on the road I needed a new turbo http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/bc591443.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/e0641818.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/dfab7a9b.jpg I went with another FP turbo. I didnt want to change my whole setup so I went with this beast. Its an FP DSM88HTA. Should make more power then the FP3575 (not that that was my limiting factor) My limiting factor last year was the fuel. The single DW300 was not enough for the amount of power I was making. The fix.. http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/8618c2d5.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/87271773.jpg Right now there is two walbro 255s. Im going to replace them with dual DW300 pumps. I will update more as more parts arrive and the work gets done. |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Looking good. Hope to see this beast at some of the meets. You plan on pushing that new turbo to the limit?
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Oooh nice. Glad to see you are back. Gonna be at proving grounds?
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
That should be good for quite a bit moar power!
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
I approve. You running the rear plate black like that or getting new ones?

Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Looks good so far! :)

Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
You have to get that thing over the power mark that mine was at!! Should be fun thats for sure. How was it for daily driving and what clutch are you running?
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Daily driving wasn't fun. I had a crappy "race battery " that died constantly. Had to carry a jump pack. Upgraded to a yellow top I think. Also it needs some kind of idle control for better drivability.
Clutch is a quartermaster twin disc |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
you on AEM? Is there a way to get it to idle better? I kept the iacv and coolant running through a 1g NT TB on mine and started, idled, and drove like stock pretty much. I could do a full pull and push in the clutch and it would sit right at 900 rpm without struggling.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
It idled just fine. Every once in a whole it would be a tad low or die when driving in traffic. Also had an issue with the wp/ps belt flying off.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Hopefully you'll be making the power you should this time :)
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
I've been slowly getting parts and everything is coming together. I was going to install everything but I still need a few parts before that happens. Hopefully this week Ill get some time to put the turbo back in and drive it around.
Picked up a second DW300 for a steal. $75 shipped :) http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/f82f9226.jpg Turbo powder coated and ceramic coated http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/8075f4e2.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/d9208d12.jpg Oil return and coolant lines http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/e7994709.jpg |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Nice, what turbo is that.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
FP DSM88 HTA
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
holy crap, what you trying to do with that thing? dyno queen? lol
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
It's only slightly bigger then what I had. And it was super fun to drive around. So no. Not a dyno queen.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
it was a joke, when you aim to be up and running again?
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
I told my sister is have it out if her garage by the end of the month. So that is the goal right now.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Did you make that goal?
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
No I didnt reach it. Had to have a fitting rewelded. And the place I got my fittings from didn't tell me the fitting I got was out of stock until mid June. I was waiting 2weeks for it. I'm thinking Thursday I'll put in some work

Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
I was working on the car today when I looked at the Lower intercooler pipe. The thing was filled with oil. Removed it along with the intercooler and cleaned is all up. Got a lot more done too, made lines and installed the turbo. Could have finished it up today but I have misplaced all the clamps for my exhaust(dp vband and WG vbands) Here are some pics:
Oil drain and coolant lines http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/f8570820.jpg Coolant line off main water pipe. Also you can see where I had to grind the block so I could fit the rear coolant line http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/464eebb6.jpg Coolant line with turbo in http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/57edebf4.jpg And a couple more of turbo installed http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/29063cf1.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/a57acbd5.jpg |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Looks good Mike!
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
So what's left till it runs?
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
The pulleys I just got tonight and to find my damn clamps I mentioned above. Then an oil change and start the bad boy up. Ill make it before proving grounds but probably wont make it. Still need a battery box and cut off switch to run legally. and Id probably get yelled at for not having a cage.

Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Curious but why did you run such a big turbo with a dsm housing. What's the hotside A/R? Not picking at you like I said just curious? Is it for spool? I'm wondering cause I wanna run a turbo that spools around 42-4500 and the pte turbos like the 6262 only go to .63A/R hotside but also heard the turbo loses efficiency from choking at higher boost.
Again just wondering. You have a 2.4 right? |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Its a .68a/r. I went with this turbo so simplicity. I had a FP3575 that blew and just wanted to swap a turbo not have to make new everything. Im not looking for a million HP (yet). And yes its a 2.4l
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Nice, can't wait to see this running. I'm interested to see how that turbo does
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Ok cool Im also interested to see what it does to. Im was just asking cause I want a my powerband from 4-8k as I dont plan on taking the revs farther than that.
But either way good job looks NICCCE! |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Any updates? I'm looking at a 3575 and wondering how you liked it?
What was the upgrade from the 3575? |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
No real update. Just got a cutoff switch and battery box in the mail yesterday. I really liked the 3575 but they have a common problem of the shaft snapping which happened to me. I still have the old 3575 if you want to buy it lol
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
I guess I'll pass a guy is selling one for a good price. but i should just go T4 and be done
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
FP just emailed me and said to pass on teh 3575 and do a 3586 in a T3 on a 2.3.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Only reason I went with another FP is because I didnt want to change everything yet. I did not like dealing with FP one bit when I first blew the turbo.
Here are the new items: Moroso Battery box http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/fbb02631.jpg And a Flaming River cutoff switch http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...e/808559b4.jpg |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Drove the car home from my sisters house today! It feels good to drive it again! Haven't got all up on it yet tho. It breaks up up top a bit, I think I need new plugs. I just hope it holds together for next weekend.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
When are you getting it tuned?
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Took the car to BIR last weekend for Powercruise. It was a blast. Drove it there, beat the crap out of it and drove it back home with no real issues.
Today I ordered up new fuel lines. Once I get them I can install the dual fuel pump set up and then its tune time. |
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
Nice, how was that event? I was highly skeptical of it, but from the pics and vids I've seen looks like a good time and some cheap track time.
|
Re: AWD Spyder Project Thread
It was awesome. I went in hating spending the $110 entry fee with camping but It was a lot of fun. The burnout comp was awesome, A lot of fire and carnage. And driving around on the road coarse was sweet. Pretty much go as fast as you want around the corners and just gun it on the straights.
