The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
;)
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...14423020_o.jpg I finally sold the DSM and the Audi and consolidated. I regret not making a project thread for the Brian Spilner DSM and will not make the same mistake with the evo. I'm guessing if I would have had a project thread it wouldn't have ended up with a bodykit or lime green. I've definitely grown up a bit since I got into DSMs so I'm going to do what I can to keep the evo classy. It was actually a lot harder than I initially hoped it would be to find a clean low mile evo! I ended up getting a 2003 Rally red VIII from wisconsin. All I've been doing to it since i've picked it up is basic maintenance and cleaning things up. I plan on posting pics as I make changes and asking advice before I make purchases. I picked it up with a little over 45k miles and the car did come with some basic bolt ons.. Shep stage 3 transfercase with LSD Tomei 7960 w\ MAP ported hotside Map o2 housing external dump (I actually hate the external dump) turbosmart compgate40 (Needs a stiffer spring) Precison 1200cc Injectors Synapse syncronic bov Buscher racing full exhaust with test pipe and down pipe V-BAND act 2900 street disc clutch with light weight flywheel Gsc s1 cams Injen upper and 1 piece lower intercooler pipes( having a hard time removing water spots on these) Injen intake Hallman MBC in cab cable driven Ets 4 inch intercooler anodized black Defi gauges (boost, oil pressure, EGT) LC-1 wideband Solid roll motor mounts Came with a CF hood http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...08534719_o.jpg I really didn't like the look of the silver mesh so i painted it black. looks a lot cleaner imo before: http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...93006251_o.jpg After:http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...11458707_o.jpg It's wingless... and i'm debating getting a wing. On the plus side it does have a CF trunk, but there is not a spring and it wont stay open on it's own. Kind of irritating. http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...23575722_o.jpg Spoiler or leave it wingless? Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Real nice, I aplaud your efforts toward keeping it clean.
Oh, and wing it! |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
If you wing it I'd just sell the carbon lid or trade it for a matching color lid with wing. at least put a lip on the trunk though.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Dude, nice! 45k on the clock what a find! Good solid setup, get it to shane for a tune on corn and just rip it. I say keep it wingless, I dig the red + CF look, very clean!
Only thing I think you should consider, ditch the blue in the seats. Black fabric paint or something, nice mod right up your alley. |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO

Already talked to shane about the current tune and it's already burning corn lol but i will look into the fabric paint... :) |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nice find indeed! Keep up the good work on it too.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Car looks great man. I'm interested to check this thing out sometime.
I did the fabric paint/dye this weekend and it turned out pretty well. I'll have some pics up on Evomn in a day or two. I might be interested in swapping that trunk for a RR trunk and wing. |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I love evo's wingless!
Looks super nice! I'd agree with the blue seats looks kind of weird in a red car, evo 9 seats would be amazing |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Looks great. I'd leave it wingless myself. Some Evo 7 style taillights would look good I think too.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nice man. I just could never justify buying an already heavily modded car lol.

Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I agree with the VII tails. They look awesome on pretty much any color combo. And get some springs come spring! Look into GTWorx and Swift. ;)
Nice car man! |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nice! Needs wing for sure.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I think you should paint it lime green :)
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Very nice and I like the cleanup you've been doing already. I vote wingless and painting the hood and trunk to match.
I might be selling my GTWorx springs and MR Bilsteins in spring; if I know ahead of time that someone is interested, it might just be enough to 100% convince me to sell. For seats, check out www.CipherAuto.com. I don't have experience with them but they look nice and price is incredibly reasonable. |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nice pickup, this car looks familar, was it on craigslist a month or so ago? Good luck with the build.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Buy these and send them to Bilstein for a custom rebuild/revalve: http://www.evomn.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7527
I'll vouch for DoughCom, very solid Texan...living in MN... |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nice car man, good luck keeping it clean. As long as it doesn't go neon green like the last car you will be a winner.

Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I'm actually really interested in the idea of dying the middle of the recaros. I wouldn't want other than oem seats so aftermarket is out of the picture. I did like the 9 seats I had in my dsm but i've had those for 3 years and i'm sick of them. Being that it's a red car I do like the idea of black over blue. I think the black will make it look really clean but i'm afraid that it looks a little plain....
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...23377a68df.jpg What are your thoughts on red? I think it will retain the sporty look and flow with the car, and if it's horrible I can always go to black. Idk if it would be possible to come back from black. http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...VO8/outerh.jpg I figure If i really mess up the seats.... I could just pick up some UK version seats. Other countries really do get a lot more options... GRR US. These would look crazy even if i just died the back seat black. http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...at103335AM.png These would be a second choice http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...at103357AM.png But FIRST i'm going to try and dye/paint it. Thumbs up or down on RED? |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Very nice Evo. Saw this on CL. Very clean all around, in and out!
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Red won't be any worse than the blue :D At least it'll match the car...
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I think that red looks great, and I wanted to do it, but
a) I couldn't find red paint fabric paint at any of the local auto stores. b) I was worried the red would combine with the blue into a crappy shade of who-knows-what. So I stuck with the safe bet and used Duplicolor fabric flat black. It matches the rest of the seat very well, even to the point of looking stock. I would agree with you that it does look a bit plain. Just a few tips if you try this: As with any painting project, take your time taping off the edges. Focus on the edges when painting. Paint the edges first and use your free hand to pull the edges as flat as possible. I had to retape and repaint around the edges of my first seat because the paint didn't make it all the way down to the bottom of the seams. Once the seats are painted and dry, use a brillow pad, stiff brush, or something else to scrub/massage the painted areas. This breaks up the top layer of paint and softens the material. It also helps to speed up getting rid of the paint smell. I also rubbed the seat with a dryer sheet and allowed the seats to air out overnight to help get rid of the smell. I'll try to get some pics up tonight of my seats. I'm interested to see red seats... |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
PKRON05 Thanks for the advice any chance you wanna lend a hand?
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I say go black, screw the red. But it might be worth a try, idk. I just think it'll end up looking cheap rather than clean.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
If you do paint you seats start with the passanger side first. So when you do the drives seat you will get it perfect. Just something that I have learned from working on cars
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nothing wrong with all black interior, Id prefer that over colors.
If you are bored with all black, throw a couple of these in. :) http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...oGPVTWTacLhZlA |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nice car. I'm guessing you bought this car from a kid named Jeremy Simonson. He seemed like he took really good care of it.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
So I hope I'm not intruding on your thread, but here are some crappy pics I took of the seats. The lighting is really hard to get right with these seats, plus I noticed I have scratches on my damn camera lense. On to the pics...
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f8...Picture015.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f8...Picture016.jpg If you're ever in the Mankato area and I'm not busy, I'd be more than happy to help you out. I'm willing to bet you could tackle this on your own though. |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Nice car! I say keep the CF truck lid, and go with a Rexpeed lip like Rosey has on his car.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Definitely not intruding. The all black does look really sick.... I know I can do it on my own i'm just not sure when I can tackle this project.
1st things 1st... I NEED WINTER TIRES I'm guessing i'm going to have to buy new. When should I put them on? I don't want to waste them when it's nice out. And aside from the obvious answer, Blizzaks, What should I consider for tires? Should I go with the oem size or other? |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
OEM size is fine. I'd recommend any of the following:
Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi (best snow tire ever, hella expensive) General Altimax Arctic (Nokian Hakka rip, second best snow tire ever, very affordable) Hankook W409 (Nokian Hakka rip, not as good as the General and louder on dry pavement...still great tire) The above are all kinda 'marshmallow' snow tires...epic in the snow and ice but on dry pavement they are a bit soft and marshmallowey. 'Performance' snow tires...made for sports cars, better in the dry: Hankook w300 (great snow tire fo the $$, lots of people I know have run them and love them) Hankook w310 (these are new version of the w300 I think?) Dunlop Wintersport M3 (longtime great snow tire with tons of great reviews) Dunlop Wintersport 3D (new version of the M3) I will recommend the Generals to everyone; I had them on my evo and they are on my wife's GLI. They turn even a FWD wheelspinner into a fukin snow cat. That being said, I can't get them in 18" for my X, so I'm probably getting either the M3's or the W310's. If you can, get them mounted on a second set of stock rims and simply swap them on right when it snows the first time, that's what I always do. Otherwise, order them, have them waiting, and once the temp is consistently below 35°, have them swapped on. |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Not gonna lie, I kinda like the red seats, but I would be concerned about the red paint on blue seats turning some total poop color. yikes.
Scheides pretty much said all there is to say about winter tires. Bizzak's are good too obviously, I have never had a set but a handful of friends have had them and I've never heard a complaint. I wish firestone had made winterforces in 17's when I had my Evo, I loved them on the dyke mobile. Pretty sure they still only make them in smaller fatter sizes like a 215-65/16 for example, not a low-pro like a stock 235/45-17 Evo tire. |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I'm running the Nitto SN2s, and they're a marshmallow tire as well. Very very awesome in the snow, I was doing 60mph while pushing snow with the front bumper a couple times last year with near perfect stability. They do suck in the dry, and in the wet I can get the car to crab walk in second just rolling onto it. A nice tire, but once they're gone I'll probably go with something more "sporty."
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I like both winterforces and blizzaks. Good luck.
On the seats i think the red insert looks pretty neat and as long as it isn't bright I think it will look nice |
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Definitely black on the seats, and a wing. I wish I would've dyed my seats black, even though I didn't own it that long. All black looks great without spending dough on the IX seats.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Thanks for the snow tire info. I'll keep you updated on what i get :)
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I had Michelin X-Ices on my old Audi, loved those tires and they handled well.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
I ordered winter tires today... The Toyota dealer in Winona was running the "Buy 3 get the 4th for $1" kind of deal. I'm also picking up a set of 8 wheels on Thursday. .... I want to powder coat them.
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
you'll need to powder coat them! LOL. Nice evo by the way
|
Re: The Brian Spilner ..... EVO
Thanks :) and how will powdercoated wheels hold up against the salt?
