Chumpcar Chumpionship

Who from here is going? I know that the Chevette/CarRacer will be there (sorry, I forgot the team name..), and it looks like Shake and Bake will be there as well.

How's preparations going? Anyone from here want to come to hang out/crew? I'm sure that between our 3 teams we could use people, and if you're thinking about doing Chumpcar next year this is a great time to come out and see how things work. Our crew situation isn't totally figured out, and we pay entrance costs for all crew members and will have a hotel room to crash in.

Its september 3-5 at Iowa Speedway in Newton, with a practice day on the 2nd, racing saturday and sunday, and monday (Labor day) leisurely pack up and head home.

There's also going to be live bands/food/beer on sunday night, not sure about saturday.

As for us, we've already changed out our head gasket again, and we've decided to undergo a fuel cell install, hopefully we don't mess that up too badly.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

We're not very creative, so it's just Team Chevette. We are super excited about going but it seems we are in the "other" class at the moment. We were hoping to at least have a chance at a trophy so I asked if it was possible to be put in the normal class because of our chassis choice. We'll see what happens but were going either way.

Have you guys ever had crew guys before? I've never experienced that luxury in Chumpcar. Our car is coming together bit by bit, although there's a lot between here and there. We just got our clutch master installed and part of our fuel injection conversion completed. Next up is the radiator which should be a trick. Getting the water pump outlet to 180 should be interesting.

You guys going to do anything suspension related to your car maintenance or otherwise? We put new wheel bearings in up front and made sure all the nuts and bolts were tight.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

They put you in EC? On what grounds? Dang, that stinks, I was hoping to see how we stacked up to you guys with a 4g63.

Oh, and we decided to stay turbo :) My headgasket isn't thanking me.

We've sortof had crew. Most of the time its one or more of our dads, brothers, etc. We had Alex from DB help us out at Brainerd. We're hoping to get some people with wrenching experience again because its a nice relief if something breaks if we have people on the sidelines who can come and take some of the burden off us.

We had a ruined bushing on one of our rear control arms, so we changed that out with a junkyard spare. We went over the front again, everything seems fine but we're bringing spare knuckles for both sides this time. Hopefully if something breaks it breaks in the practice session.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

I don't know exactly if we're in EC yet. I think this race is done a bit differently as it's an invite thing. As far as I understand it, we are running as a non-invite car. I hope once we get back to the standard format next year we can run as normal. I think how we run in September will factor in to how we are classed too. If we run mid pack, as I expect, I don't see any reason why we would be EC in the future. We won't be half as fast as that chopped up 5 series that got put in EC. I'm doing everything I can to choke off this motor as I don't think the stock rearend can handle a 14b motor for very long. I found a MHI 13T turbo to run on stock boost combined with a restrictive exhaust. Our car is light enough that 140-150hp will be more than enough.

Where is the championship located?

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Shake and Bake is coming with a new set of hubs and wheel bearings in the rear. We have been feeding the hampsters a healthy diet of 10-40 mobil 1 (1 quart per 7 hours), but we are switching back to 20-50 conventional to reduced the oil consumption and adding a accusump to save the engine from oil starvation @ 8000 rpm that it will regulary see on the oval. Be sure to know your fuel mileage, we know ours now.. lol
Btw.. why are you guys keeping the turbos? ditching the turbo, the fuel mileage alone would give you an edge over the germans.

Newton, Iowa at Iowa Speedway. Just east of Des Moines.

We're keeping the turbo because racecar, and because power.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

I've done a fuel sipping 1.6l car and a V8 car. The V8 burnt through gas like it was going out of style but it was a blast to drive, the 1.6l spent more time watching the rear view to not get run over than anything else. If I had to choose I would pick speed and passing over fuel mileage every time. Our team will never win but we can always pass cars, so that's what I'll always choose to do from now on.

I should be available to help at least either Saturday or Sunday, maybe both. What time of day is the racing?

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Actually race times are Sat 10am-11pm and Sun 9am - 9:30pm, but things like registration, tech, gear inspection, driver practice, etc will start Friday.

Well whoever needs help, just let me know and I'll try to make it out for as much time as possible. I'm not the greatest wrench in the world, especially not being familiar with these cars, but I should be able to help out.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

I agree with CarRacer, faster cars are more fun for sure. We're doing things to mitigate the weaknesses therein.

Progress! I ran out of welding gas at like midnight. Tried to borrow a tank today, and failed. We'll finish it this week sometime.

Looking good. That bottom cradle is a nice touch and that tank will sit nice and low too. What are you guys doing for a fuel pump setup? Inline?

s1ngletracker 08-14-2011 10:28 PM

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

yeah, just a cheapie inline fuel pump. I'll post more pics when its all done.

Gah, our car won't start! No idea what it is. We were supposed to hit the rollers at DB last night :(

That's not cool. Turns over? Spark and fuel? Hope it's something easy and you guys get it figured out soon.

No compression due to valve lash holding the exhaust valves open.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

welp, we finally finished up all the mechanical work we wanted to get done before the chumpionship. Feels good to be ready! Packing up stuff tomorrow, and a last minute alignment this week (2nd try) and we're ready to go! Getting excited.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Glad you guys won't be making a last minute push like us.

We do have a couple small bits of good news though. I got the car to fire on Saturday although I didn't have a radiator in the car so I only ran it for a second. Also, I finally got our classification for the race figured out and we are back in the hunt with everyone provided that we don't "stray too far from having a Chevette". I think we're okay on that front once they look at the car, although I'm glad they are waiting to pass final judgement. That means they're going to follow their own rules, which I like.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Awesome! Are you signed up for the practice session?

CarRacer 08-29-2011 01:34 PM

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

No, Iowa is pretty simple and I don't see any gain in putting more hours on the car than needed. We will be testing the car at Raceway park before we head to Iowa so that will be our practice session.

s1ngletracker 08-29-2011 01:43 PM

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Yeah, we're mostly doing it to shake out bugs (hopefully none) from the car, and one of our drivers would like some practice on the banking.

CarRacer 08-31-2011 06:50 PM

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Alright, practice is out for us at this moment. I just got the car to move under its own power so it's functional. There was a oil leak at the turbo drain, but I already fixed that. The front ride height was way lower with the heavier motor in there, so we are currently addressing that now. No sense in testing the car with a borked front end, so we didn't go today. We may test tomorrow buy I doubt it as we need to load up and that will be a couple hour process.

I'm not super mad at missing practice though as there was a question as to whether we could get the damn thing done in time. Now that it moves and runs I know we can make the race at least.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

as i said in your project thread, awesome. BUT... I would try to get some kinda testing on the thing to make sure everything is functional. But from seeing how you did things, I don't see why you would have any problems. Maybe chumpcar would let you run half the practice session for half price? 3 hours, if you asked nicely?

3-4 gearset is dead in the transmission I picked up off of CL. If anyone has a lead on a T5 transmission out of a Mustang 5.0 PM me ASAP.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Well the mistustyle contingent wasn't without our troubles, but when we were running I think Shake and Bake, Team Chevette, and Slugworks were pretty dang impressive.

Shake and bake - maybe we should all consider cryo-treated hubs next year :)

Holy fuck that was a crazy race. Honda suspension components can suck my balls and so can Falken Azenis RT-615Ks.

Matt D was Jeff Gordan out there for a long time using drafting to get their car going way faster than it normally could.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

We had a ton of fun in the Chevette. We ran 30 minute stints at the start so everyone on our team would have a good shot at driving at least once. We were amazed that our pile lasted the entire 25 hours. We had a few issues during the race though. The rain on Saturday leaked through our unsealed Lexan windshield directly onto the MPI relay. That got solved by wrapping a plastic grocery store bag around what we could and sealing it with copious amounts of duct tape. Our shifter handle is two pieces and bolts together, those bolts worked themselves loose and we had to spend 20 minutes fixing that. The most major issue came up with 2 hours to go. Something put a hole in our oil cooler mounted in the RF fenderwell by the tire. We had to loop the lines on the filter housing to finish. Also at this time, we had a leak in the radiator that we didn't notice while dealing with the oil cooler. I limped it around in 5th gear to close out the race, stopping to put water in when the motor started to stumble. Overall the car exceeded all of our expectations.

Also, did you guys check out the top speed section of the results? Because, holy fuck we went 144 in our shitbox.

Awesome data to look at, congrats to all teams!

s1ngletracker 09-06-2011 05:11 PM

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship

Those top speeds are not right. They were derived from the distance of the roval but the times of the oval.

I mean, our speedo should be mostly accurate and I never saw above 115 or so.

Saw that car, was fun to check out and watch you guys put it through the cones. Had two people ask if I knew anything about the car, they had no clue what Chump Car was, but thought the concept was worth looking into.
