Stripped oil feed from head..

I was just tightening up my oil feed line from the head and there was nothing there.... My old setup was fed through the oil filter housing so this was never used before.. The bolt just kept spinning and didnt even get snug. I did NOT over tighten this bolt. The threads just came off... Like I said the bolt never even got snug..

What are my options? Do I tap it? if I do, do I worry about the shavings getting into the head? what would be the best thing to do? do I need to remove the head?

Maybe have someone come over and weld the oil port shut if you're never going to use it again? Just a thought.

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

This is where I am going to run the feed from.. I used to run it from the oil filter housing and while tightening the bolt onto the head for the new feed it stripped out.

Gotcha. Possible to block off the head, and then use a restrictor on the feedline from the OFH for your needs?

I don't know... I wanted to run it from the head so..

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

Helicoil or re tap a different size. Vacuum that shit outta there.

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

^ that bolt it 1 size... what would I use then for a feed line?

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

I told you we would retap it tomorrow or tonight. You provide the beer, and I will provide the tap. I dont think it was that bad

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

It looked pretty bad to me... Worst case I think it will just carve up the hole with the tap and just make it bigger..

Use a helicoil.

Helicoil it, problem solved.

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

Mine did the same thing, was a real pain in the ass. When i ended up doing was getting a longer bolt then having a place drill out the center and putting the two holes in the side like the stock bolt.

Maybe that might work for you too if the threads aren't stripped all the way back and just at the front?

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

I believe its all the way..

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

If I heli coil it wont I have to worry about the shavings getting into my head still?

If you retap it you'll still have to deal with shavings.

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

Chris, I was a n00b and did this too once before.

I helicoiled the head. I used grease on the drill bit, used grease on Q-tips to get them out, and cranked my engine over with the line disconnected to ensure all debris was out of the passage and would not have a free ride to my turbo.

Don't know what a Heli-Coil is? youtube, google

^ I youtubed how to do it last night. Would you mind assisting me today on this project?

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

I actually typed Helicoil last night when you posted this thread. but then got to thinking.Do they make helicoils in that size though? I would look into that before doing anything. The first time i did a helicoil i was amazed at how easy and great it worked, but i was using on a regular bolt, not a feed line.
Its going to have metal shavings no matter what you do, Pack the hole with paper towel prior to drilling then use needle nose after to get the towel out, should cut down on the shavings.

Haha and thanks for the input

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

Well, I picked up a heli coil kit for it today but I'm going to try and tap it first. I got my vacum outside and some q tips.. FML if this fails..

sleepydsm 05-11-2011 04:21 PM

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

if the threads are gone the tap isn't gonna do poop. There just isnt enough material.

Lucky for you... The hole is already there. So you have a pilot hole for your drill.

It's a piece of pie. You can do it!

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

Me and mike tried the tap and failed... but I might try brads method and get a longer bolt. I already bought the heli coil kit but really don't want to drill if it can be avoided.

helicoil ftw.

Re: Stripped oil feed from head..

I would try a longer bolt. And try this new threadlocker. Its like jb weld but its for stripped out holes.

Helicoil saved the day. All done and worked great
