MR2 in the making

I guess I'll make a little project thread on the 2. That would make 2 MR2's on this forum. This was originally my brother's car but it's becoming mine since he is not driving it anymore. It's a 1991 T top Toyota Mr2 turbo. White on black which are becoming harder to find. My brother bought it all stock a few years ago. Had a coolant leak which caused a little bit of overheating. A few mods he had done to the car is K-Sport coilovers, Blitz type 03 wheels with BFgoodrich tires, and a Sard BOV. Now that it's in my hands with 103k miles I've got a few mods planned for it. Nothing extreme like the spyder. Planning to just look good and have fun with it this summer. Alright on with the pictures:

Plans:
-fix that eye sore front bumper and repaint
-3" exhaust system
-intercooler kit with fans and blockoff shroud
-intake pipe with k&n filter
-bump up boost to 12 or more(factory is 10)
-94+wing and trunk
-OEM side vents
-solid front moldings
-some body work
-mild wire tuck
-keep up maintenance

Parts I've been collecting/done:

-wrinkle black valve cover
-replace HFH and HFHOE
-re-route heater coolant hose
-EGR block off plates
-short shifter
-Kouki tail lights
-94+ jdm front lip
-autometer cobalt boost and oil pressure
-autometer boost and oil pressure install kit
-triple gauge holder
-engine strut rod
-3" downpipe

HFH and HFHOE all torn apart. They were crusty and old.

Forgot to add the OEM mud guards that are overly priced. I've always thought they look a whole lot better with them. Maybe next week when it's warmer I'll get around to installing all of the parts laying around.

Nice! I've always liked the white 2nd gens.

BTW, there are at least 3 MR2's on the board. I've had mine for a few years (semi-restoring it and rallycrossing it). I have an 85 hardtop though. I may or may not get rid of the rust on the back panels. Not sure yet though.

Re: MR2 in the making

Small update on what I've been doing with the 2. I've removed the 91 tail lights and soon to install the Kouki tail lights. Got my MAF adapter to run a basic 3" air filter which will be replaced with a K&N later on. I'm going to make my own turbo intake pipe instead of buying a $160 kit. The pipe should make the engine bay a lot less cluttered. The front lip has been sanded down will probably be primered in 2 weeks. Greddy style side mount intercooler kit, fan shroud, block off shroud, and slim fan coming in sometime next week or 2. Next to buy are OEM tune up parts and a simple catch can. Will post pics when I receive the parts.

My brother got the bumper sanded down evenly. Lip mounted just to mock up. I will be primering it sometime this week.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...z/IMG_2361.jpg

Installed mud guards. I love the look with them. Believe it or not these OEM mud guards can be sold for $200 easily. I picked this set for a steal.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...z/IMG_2359.jpg

Kouki tail lights soon to be installed after I order the L brackets. You can see my OTC floor jack in action!:woohoo1:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...z/IMG_2356.jpg

My brother and I installed the intercooler kit and intake pipe. I made the intake pipe myself from a 3" 45 degree aluminum pipe. Removed EGR with block off plates. Also made a trip to the hardware store to replace some rusty bolts. Mounted engine lid strut rod so I don't have to pull the stick down anymore to hold the lid up.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...z/IMG_2370.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...z/IMG_2372.jpg

All that's left for now is to paint the bumper and misc pieces + order some OEM parts. Going to replace the fuel filter, rotor, cap, and wires. Hopefully it doesn't get terrible gas mileage as it did before. An aluminum radiator will be ordered sometime this summer.

The intercooler goes down on the passenger side vent.

Nice work! That lip should look nice. Pics of the intercooler installation?

There is a white MR2 that looks very similar to this that parks in the ramp here at St Cloud State.

What do these things have for a stock turbo?

I wasn't feeling any other lip than the 93+. But I bought mine from someone who ordered a bumper from japan with that rare blue color. Sorry I didn't get any pictures of the intercooler installed. It's a 4" core with a fan shroud that takes a 9" slim fan. The factory turbos on a second gen like mine is CT-26. The better one is the CT-20b from the 3rd gen that was rated at 245hp from factory I think.

Re: MR2 in the making

That's the same as a MKIII Supra right? What all is done to this thing anyways? I didn't see a modlist. I know my poopra buddies say the turbo outlet/elbow (equivalent to a DSM/Evo o2 housing) is a pretty big gain on their cars, same for MR2's?

Do you plan on upgrading the stock turbo some day or just having fun with it as is?

Typically people will just upgrade the downpipe completely instead of an outlet. The dual scroll design means that the "o2 housing" is huge and a giant mess of exhaust area.

This reminds me I need to update my thread, maybe tonight when its on the road finally.

MKIII Supra's CT-26 turbo is different than the 3SGTE's CT-26. The downpipe flange are different and the 3SGTE have twin entry wastegate flapper instead of one flapper.

My plans are just basic bolt ons(intake, intercooler, exhaust, downpipe, etc..). Maybe some cams in fall or next winter. As for turbo, still undecided. I will definitely be using this CT-26 this summer. Maybe as big as a GT35r but that'll be in a year or 2. I wish there was an affordable simple tuning system link how we have ECMlink for our DSM.

A used AEM ems would be a good deal. And you can make any version work as long as it's from a 4 banger and you get the harness. :)

There is actually a PNP version. I've tuned on on a MR2 and one on an AllTrac (same box if memory serves correct)

Re: MR2 in the making

A little update. I got a few layers of white primer on the front bumper but need to go buy more primer. Found a cheap set of euro lights. Will be picking up a wideband this week and solid side moldings next week. In a few weeks I'll be ordering my OEM parts and I should be able to install the bumper and tail lights. I also got some of the side moldings pained. Just need to paint the passenger side vent and door moldings.

Euro signals. Thinking about getting some amber LED for the clear part.

I run a chipped honda ECU on mine. $150 engine management baby. I did a write up on it over on mr2oc a few years ago.

Re: MR2 in the making

Got some of the OEM parts in today. L brackets came with it so I was ready to install the kouki tail lights.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...z/IMG_2567.jpg

Bumper put on to just test fit. Need to buy the solid molding and wait for the license plate bracket to come in.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...z/IMG_2572.jpg

The hose couplers that came with the intercooler kit weren't the correct size. I'm guessing that's the cause of it to not stay idling. I will be ordering a 1 piece Berk Tech cold pipe to replace the 2 piece. That'll be 1 less coupler and 2 t bolt clamp to worry about.

You should still be able to use the sensors in the distributor instead of going with a custom crank setup. It should be a VR sensor type which MS can pick up.

There should be like 3 sensors in the distributor if memory serves me.

24 or 36 tooth - i can't remember how many tooth there is but it is there
4 tooth
1 TDC tooth

Just take apart the distributor to see what wires feed what.

You can tap into one or two of those. I recommend using the TDC tooth for one input and one of the multi tooth input for the other. You should be able to pick the wires up by the stock ECU if you have a pin out chart.

I helped out on putting a 20v in a mr2 MKI and went with the custom crank setup tooth wheel.

I wish we went with the distributor! it would have made our lives a lot easier. The multi tooth wheel by the crank looses signal. I blame the bracket that the hall sensor sits on. Need to better engineer that. after that it will work just fine.

However it would have been MUCH easier to tap into the distributor instead.

PS later down the road you don't even need to use the distributor for your ignition! You would be using it like a cam sensor instead.

the 20V is running a DSM coil pack controlled by the MS2. Works VERY well and is an ignition upgrade compare to what was there.

the 20v 4age and the 3sgte are not all that different. both have cylinder heads from YAMAHA
