Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
So I was messing around and called my Aunt looking for a running and driving car. I have been trying to buy her husbands Galant VR4 for years. Well. She said that due to it needing a clutch and having trans problems.
The last time i seen the car it looked alot better. lol. The paint is really bad on it. And the interior is in dire need of a good cleaning. The car does run good though. Even with a slipping clutch I was able to drive it 250 miles back home. The clutch did slip anytime you get into boost. But i just took it slow. I already have the parts to fix the clutch issue. Only thing I am concerned about is the trans issues. If you put it into first and let the clutch out it just pops out. I did do some looking and i see that the bracket holding the cables on the trans is loose. Gonna tighten that up and check the cables for adjustment and see what happens. Any way here are some pics. http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0071.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0067.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0070.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0069.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0072.jpg Its dirty as hell and needs a good cleaning. Which will get done this weekend. Hoping to have it up and going by next week. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
mod #1 relocate battery to trunk lol
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
awesome! what are your plans for it after you fix the clutch and clean it up? good to see a non-molested GVR4 around!
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Looks pretty straight, get a paint job and you'd have a kick ass bone stock GVR-4! Probably not many of those out there anymore. Heck, maybe just a good cleaning and a buff.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
I kinda wanna keep it simple. Not alot of mods. Gonna pretty much replace the clutch and see if there is any other issues with the trans.
Gonna do emissions and egr removal. Also adding a MBC, and trying to find at least a jdm fmic for it until i can afford the ETS kit. Pretty much just gonna start small and go from there. I am still debating on relocating the battery to the truck. Its just so odd seeing the battery right there. Goodhart-I know the paint dont look bad in the pics, but in person its horrid. lol. The doors and one rear fender must have been repainted at one time cause they are still shiny. But on a good note. My uncle said if i can get it into a good primer sealer and possibly just a satin clear by the end of summer, he will respray it or me. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
if you relocate the batter it will clean up and open up the bay alot!!
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
ya. I am looking into a battery relocation kit. Just doing some searching over at GVR4.org and see what others do.

Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
honestly im jelouse i would trade my dsm for glant vr4 anyday
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Well, this is not my first VR4. I had one years ago, like 5+ years ago, and sold it to a friend. And in the middle of me buying it back, the car was sitting at his place of work waiting for a chance to get new paint. And there was a nasty ass storm and a tree fell on it and three other cars. Ever since than i have always wanted another one. Its been the only car I have actually searched for. But any good ones were usually about 6+ hours away.
Here is the pic of my last one a week before the tree fell. http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...d0a5793f70.jpg I dont have any aftermath pics. Because I was not the titled owner, the guy at the shop would not let me back there. This car was reportedly taken out to the shop owners land, run over with a Dozer, and than buried. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
lol? kinda sounds like a fishy story to me..
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Ya. I know. I tried to get back there to see the car and he wouldn't let me. It didn't help that my so called friend left that job owing the guy money. He wanted me to pay an insane amount of money for the car to get it back.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
I would love a GVR4 for a DD. The hood looks pretty faded, but like Goodhart said a good buff job can make a world of difference.

Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
my buddie works at benz detailing cars.. he does side jobs for cheap if you want his number i can pm it to you
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
I might have to get that from ya. Its gonna be a while before i get up that way though. Spending most my time with the new baby, both the car and the new daughter. lol.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
I also want one for a daily. Ive been looking at them for almost 6 months now. Congrats on the new car.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
yeah but it is from montana, and they don't use salt out there.
congrats on the pickup. I can say that i'm jealous...haha |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
They dont salt much there, but this car had a life of gravel roads. So I am hoping I dont discover something bad underneath. I already looked under there and it looked decent. But we will see once i get it cleaned up.

Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
So i have been starting to look into doing something with the battery. Mainly cause I am sure i need a new one anyway.
I am still half and half between relocating it to the trunk, or doing a small battery setup in the bay. Kinda like this. http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...tion-inbay.jpg I am still looking at relocating the battery as i would love the extra space in the engine bay. Found some parts that I think would make it a clean install. JUst pricing out wire and what not that would be needed to do it. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
I vote trunk if this thing is going to be a daily driver. Seems like everyone I know with a mini battery in a DSM, it has left them stranded at some point or another.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
I'm going to put the battery into the trunk just because it's more reliable that way during the cold winters. I know I'm going to need the battery kill switch so I would eventually do that but probably just put the kill switch in when ever I have the time to do so. It's too cold to work on it right now :P Brother's civic is in the garage getting fixed. But, here's some links that may help out:
#1 http://www.galantvr4.org/ubbthreads/...age=28&fpart=1 #2 http://www.galantvr4.org/ubbthreads/...ev=#Post968660 Previous owner had a system in the trunk so I will probably just route the wires the way the wires went from the engine to the trunk. I'll try to get pictures up once it actually gets warmer. Hopefully this helps man. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Yea, that's one thing to keep in mind with a trunk relocation, if you plan to bring it to a drag strip that actually cares about tech you'll need a vented box and cut-off switch. Jeg's sell's kits, but I'm sure a guy could piece together a kit by himself that costs half as much as they want.
And if you go with a small battery, try checking out what Batteries Plus has, my buddy got a PC680 equivalent for way cheaper than the Odyssey's cost. His name is 95tsi on here if you wanted to ask him what exactly he has. |

Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Picked up a couple little things for the car. Got a 1g shifter coming, Boost gauge, Solid shifter bushings- the factory ones are shot, may be part of my shifting problem. Gonna drive the car back home this weekend. And a buddy is gonna let me use his garage to switch the clutch.
Gonna try and get the interior cleaned up a little while i am at the in-laws this weekend. Still looking for a couple little parts for the car. In need of the drivers side a pillar trim and the other trim piece that connects to that one. And also the fuel door latch. Hopefully will find them soon. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
well, I did get a few things sorted out on the Galant this weekend. I didn't plan on changing the clutch out at my father in laws, but he later said I could. But before than i got some little stuff done.
I fixed the stupid gas door latch. Snagged one off and eclipse and it was the same. I than did an emissions and egr removal. Almost all of the vacuum lines were cracked. I than redid what little vacuum lines i had to with new stuff. Added a Hallman MBC that i had bought for the talon. And also added an AEM boost gauge and Wideband i had bought for the talon. I was going to use an a pillar mount for the gauges, but the gauge pod i had looked horrid when I did the test fitting. So i did a quick throw together and mounted the gauges under the radio. Still dont look bad for a piece of plastic. http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0077.jpg I than started getting the car apart after my father in law said i could keep it in his garage. I did what I could get from the top as I did not bring my jack or jack stands with me. http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0079.jpg Hopefully next weekend I will have the trans out. Different clutch in. And maybe drive it home. We'll see. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
You should power wash that thing it's filthy
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
I was planning on washing it before i started working on it. But where the car is located there is no places open right now. So it will be done as soon as i get it back on the road. Its pretty dirty in there. But what do you expect for a car that has lived a life on a gravel road.
I also gotta take a look at a couple oil leaks. Kinda looks like VC gasket is leaking, and oil feed from cylinder head is leaking too. Also gonna pull the heat shield off of the manifold. The top of the turbo looks nasty. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
So, finally was able to get some work done on the car this weekend. Took a little bit, but got the trans out. And ya, the clutch was gone.
http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0090.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...IMAG0091-1.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0092.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMAG0093.jpg Glad I got new stuff to go in. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
So had a buddy offer me a 16G turbo to put on the galant. Only one problem. The turbo came with a whole car. lol
The car itself has a nasty knock, pretty sure its a rod. BUt haven't dug into yet. Its a 94 talon DL that someone put a 4G63t into it. Its pretty hacked together in the engine bay, but the interior is really nice. Not quite sure what i am gonna do with it yet though. http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...f/IMAG0097.jpg http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...f/IMAG0098.jpg I took the pics after we towed it back to my friends house so I can use the garage. This car would need alot of work for it to be a good reliable car. Wiring needs to be redone, motor fixed, and other misc things. Might just use it as a tinker toy. |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Well, finally starting to get things done. Got the trans in and started getting all the stuff underneath put together, Gotta go get some trans/transfer case oil tomorrow. And probably a new battery. Hopefully will have it all back together tomorrow.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Well, got the car together tonight, but still having one problem. I have bled the clutch twice and it still wont let me shift if the car is running. I am hoping I am just overlooking something.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Have you adjusted the pedal at all?
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
No, Not yet, I was gonna look at that today. I gotta pull the rad to change out some things so I am also gonna bleed the slave cylinder again. Its kinda cramped in there with everything put back together.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Yes, The trans is in. BUt still first gear sucks. and clutch engagement is dam near right off the floor. I did try adjusting the clutch pedal, but it was already turned almost all the way out. So that didn't help as much.
But on the bright side. I finally get to take it home. Now just gotta stick to earning money for a rebuild. |

Ya, the clutch is alot different than what I am used to. But it is a used clutch so hopefully it will be just fine.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
You mentioned you fixed your gas door with one from an eclipse? Did you replace the whole door or what? My gvr4 gas door has a spot that looks like a lock assembly belongs there and just flops around. :(
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Mine needed the plastic thing that attaches to the body. I'll take a pic of it shortly. But yes, I just grabbed one out of an eclipse and it worked perfectly.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
The part i replaced was the plastic piece in the pic. I actually think I got it from a Laser, but they are the same.
http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/v...f/IMAG0187.jpg I just made sure to re lube it that way it wouldn't break again. lol |
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
huh, the piece I'm missing is actually the latch on the gas door itself. I'll pm you a pic or something and figure it out.
|
Re: Perkul8r's 91 Galant VR4 1055/2000
Ah, Ya, I think I know what piece your talking about. I am not sure what other cars that would work off of. But I will do some looking.
