DSM for DD?
Jest was thinking about using my 90 talon tsi awd for a every day driver. I have to rebuild the engine. Plan keeping it stock for the most part. So how many of you out there use your dsm for a daly driver's. What is the pros and cons. And would this be a smart or not lol. I have had people say yes there Great cars and then Others say sell that pos fast as you can when it is done lol. So what do you guys all think?
|
Re: DSM for DD?
It all depends on what you do to it. If you rebuild the engine and you know what you're doing, you'll be fine. If you're guessing and looking here for rebuild info, you're probably best off with something else. They make a great winter car with stockish fuel control and such.

Re: DSM for DD?
i dd my 90 only thing i hate is seeing her al saltly knowing im gonna have to fix some rust when spring comes around
|
Re: DSM for DD?
I personally will never have a DSM DD again, and suggest the same to you.
Different strokes for different folks. |
Re: DSM for DD?
I vote no, but that's just me.
|
Re: DSM for DD?
It can be done! Stay on top of maintnance, fix anything that breaks with quality parts as quick as you can to get it back on the road asap. Keep the mods basic and plan your mods carefully so they can be installed quickly and efficiently, and don't go too crazy powerwise.
Good luck! You're in for an adventure! (keep this mentality and you will be in great shape) |

Re: DSM for DD?
I DD'd DSMs for 7 years.
*edit* They were much younger cars back then though :D |

Oh, forgot to mention: get AAA Gold. ~$100/year and your ass is covered. I have had it since I bought my 1G in 2002 and have carried the card (and used it) ever since. Always pays for itself several times over, guaranteed. |
Re: DSM for DD?
Do what Scheides said and you'll be fine. Id also suggest at least some all seasons or blizzaks during the winter months.

Re: DSM for DD?
When I say DD, I drive mine ALL year round. This year is the FIRST time I've actually not driven it in winter :(. I'd suggest doing the usual maintenance check ups. I haven't had any major issues other than the alternator going bad on me during the winter. DSMs are equipped with the 75amp alty, GVR4s have the 90amp alty...that's probably why my car has gone through 3 alternators. Other than that, I really did wish I had a set of winter tires and summer tires because it'd actually be quite useful during the snowy snowy snow days. I religiously change my oil/oil filter ever 3,000 miles and luckily...I don't have a heavy foot. The GVR4 has been my DD for college and it's definitely done it's fair job :D
my mods are; e316g, 2g mani, exhaust system, 550s, 190 pump, fmic, dsmlink v2, 2g mas...yeah. REALLY reliable when they're not hacked or half-assed built and don't have shitty/crappy previous owners. |
Re: DSM for DD?
I DD'd my 2G year round, fixed shit that broke as quick as I could, never had any freak-out points where I had no idea what I was going to do about transportation. But at the same time I stayed on top of maintenance and more often then not picked up the parts I needed before the dying ones failed completely.

Re: DSM for DD?
I'll echo what other people said. I've DD'ed my 93 tsi awd for a few years now. Just recently had a little crisis when the water pump imploded, but that is solely because I ignored the horrible noise it was making for months and months. Lesson learned there. Had it been fixed sooner, i'd still be driving it without a hiccup. But i have a backup car.

Re: DSM for DD?
I dd'd a modded 92 GSX and it works, but damn man, that thing raped all of my free time with repairs. I would say that for a DD a DSM is a no. Half the time that I DD'd my DSM I had a back up Neon waiting to get used.
|
Re: DSM for DD?
I absolutely love my Tsi, AWD with Blizzaks, its lightly modded, S16g, injectors, FP and Shane tune. It is a snow eating monster. 168k on the clock, never left me stranded. (hope I didn't just shoot myself in the foot) Maintenance is the key to keeping any car, especially a DSM reliable. Just like anything, dont half ass anything and keep mods light, and you should have an awesome all weather cruiser.
|
Re: DSM for DD?
Daily drove all mine, only cars i've owned other than a neon. They arent to bad unless you have a shit ton of mods, or a car that wasn't very solid to begin with
|
Re: DSM for DD?
I daily drove my modded '92 GSX for 3 years year round and it only ever left me stranded once when the alternator went out, but I drove for 3 days on just battery power. The car still drove great when I sold it.

Re: DSM for DD?
I currently drive a Red FWD 2g DD, horrible in the winter wow, so far this winter alone i've been left stranded many times with, balljoints snapping, axles breaking, clutch going out only because of bad previous owner maintenance but now is 100% solid + other things done as preventative maintenance. Yesterday it was -5 degrees out and started right up on my stock 155k 7-bolt.(mods list in sig) hmm only thing is that its a huge risk driving in the winter with these dumb asses, you might wreck your beauty.

Re: DSM for DD?
If you never go into boost you'll be fine for a while haha. I dd my 95 TSi for a year or so, worked well as long as I didnt push it too much.
|
Re: DSM for DD?
the only time i have had an issue with mine is the alt going out, a backup car is a good idea but not a must i love my dsm and will forever lol
|
Re: DSM for DD?
Well it look like I am going to lean towards a dsm for a dd. Far as mods I was thinking cold air e16g mabey a gm mass. Cams from a 92 and up exhaust 2 3/4 or2 1/2 turbo back. And mabey 550 injectors and that is about it for mods. O the car is a tsi awd. But my driving habits are not good you could say
What I drive is a 95 mazda protege 5 speed with a 1.5t and that t doesn't stand for turbo lol and it see 5 to 6 k every day and has 262000 on it. So yea I have a led foot. But that could be it is a slow car and probley go away with a car with power lol. Well I plan on putting in new piston and rings in the dsm do to a valve is in one piston. So does any one know of any pistons that are reasonable priced for the quality. I was looking on e bay but don't trust it lol. But has any one use NPR pistons. Are they any good? |
Re: DSM for DD?
Skip the GM mas and go with a 2g mas. It'll save you a lot of drivability headaches.
|
Re: DSM for DD?
+1^
|
Re: DSM for DD?
Use stock 2g pistons on 1g rods. More than strong enough for your goals.

Re: DSM for DD?
So what is the benefit of using 2g piston ? I know that they will give you a higher compression
|
Re: DSM for DD?
^^ That is the benefit.

Re: DSM for DD?
It's funny that people constantly mention being stranded from an alternator. Mine went out yesterday and I had to walk two miles home. Luckily I have other cars to drive, but it was kinda fun getting the old girl out for a spin.
|
Re: DSM for DD?
Lol that is life.
|
Re: DSM for DD?
LOL, only time my old Talon ever "stranded" me was when my alt went out, and I was lucky enough to have members here around to get my battery charged enough to get me home.

-OEM MHI E3 16g or nothing -If you do 550's you have to do something to tune it; s-afc, dsmlink, or just do the 550/2g mas combo, its worked for thousands of other 1Gs. -you will be surprised how when you will beat on an underpowered car and take it a bit more easy on a higher-powered car. 1/3 throttle in the dsm is like WOT in your protege so you can get plenty of smiles w/o abusing the car too much (I need to listen to myself on this one) -its a tish odd that you're talking about keeping it pretty stock but yet we're talking about engine parts? 100% stock block ftw imho, but its getting harder and harder to find an unmolested 6-bolt without 150k miles on it (not that thats aweful, but you know what I mean). Re: DSM for DD?
I've been daily driving my 91 Talon now for about 6 months. Wouldn't have it any other way. Just keep it simple with the mods, and think about mods that upgrade the over-all driveability of it instead of just power. I beat the shit out of mine daily boosting all the time, bouncing off the rev limiter. It still starts every time, and gets me to where I'm going with a lot of fun.
I have a 14b, evo 9 injectors and fuel pump, fmic, and 3in. GM maf translator running @ 20 psi. |
Re: DSM for DD?
I think some where I was looking some one had a set of g2 pistons on g1rods all that it needed is rings. Who makes a good set of rings for stock g2 pistons.

Re: DSM for DD?
Has any one done a evo9 pistons on 6 bolt rods. If so is it better than 2g pistons on 6 bolt rods is it worthwhile to do. I have head that the evo9 pistons are the strongest pistons you can get as OEM from mits. I still plan on keeping it mostly stock. What is your guys in put. O and it is a 6 bolt

Re: DSM for DD?
DD during summer and get a POS 4 wheel drive truck for the winter, you don't wan't some dumb ass cutting you off during the winter and you sliding into them and totalling your ride, rust also sucks. Why wouldn't you wan't to DD a fun/fast car unless you get horrible gas milage because your at 450whp. Get oem replacement kyb shocks, no coil overs and you should be fine. I'm going for 300-350hp for my DD. And these cars, 1g's are now collectors cars so your going to have to replace you front end, brakes, half shafts, wheel bearings, ect. but once you get it all done it's worth it. My 1g fwd now has a new lease on life and it's time to make some power. Most kids, I mean people would do it the other way around and get power mods and make their car 400whp and have ball joints and tie rods that are falling off the car, dangerous in my opinion. I say do it because I'm seeing fewer of these cars driving around nowdays!

Re: DSM for DD?
I used to DD my 1g everywhere. I've only had to call for a tow four times in four years. Early on it was a 20g/scm61 but for the longest (and in the end) a T67.
As long as you're OK with overheating and waiting 10 min while dumping water (or Mountain Dew) on the radiator. Or tightening your oil filter spindle on the side of a road. Or rewiring your fuel pump on the fly. Or rewiring radiator fans to a switch you have to get out and flip EVERY time you turn off & start the car.... You'll be fine haha. Oh and make sure your TPS is plugged in when the cops come for playing in the sandbox... Cops tend to not like it when you can't drive away. |
Re: DSM for DD?
That sounds like it was lacking on maintenance. I've never had my car over-heat. Only left me stranded once when I was a newbie. Never broke an axle. Broke 2 clutches but could still drive home.
It's all on you to decide what kind of DSM experience you want... |

Although my 03 Acura TL amazed me last week. The main engine ground frayed off the connector which was still connected to the trans. And this is on a car I refused to touch. Brought it to the dealer for everything. |
