Project: Auto FWD
After Three differnt trips to the track this summer with shifting problems, and never getting a clean pass I've decided to jump on the auto bandwagon. Aaron set me up with 99% of the parts I need for the swap so progress has already started. So far I have the clutch/ brake pedal assembly swaped out with the auto pedal. And I have the auto shifter and cable installed. I still have to add the TCU harness to my wireing harness, and get everything bolted up under the hood. I feel like Im making good progress so far considering I still have the rest of winter to collect parts and finish the swap. My goal will be to have the car back together to make some shakedown passes at opening day at Grove Creek 1/8th mile in the spring.
I plan on running -reprogramed TCU with full line pressure and shift points -restalled stock converter (I'd like to find somewhere local to do the restall if anyone knows a good shop) -Kiggley or IPT end clutch -I'll be putting my LSD insert diff from my 5-speed in the auto -26x10.5x15 slicks ( these will be the last think puchased if I can find the money If not I'll be running my Hooser DR's or 24X9X15" slicks) IF any Auto guru's see anything missing let me know I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possably so any info on doing things right the first time would be great. |
Re: Project: Auto FWD
I can't wait to see this car, I remember us running at RF together 2 yrs ago.
Shame we never got to run on the street. |

Re: Project: Auto FWD
If you want an auto fwd why dont you just buy my car. It already has an IPT racing tranny and stall converter in it.
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
^Your car is $3800, all he needs is a trans. he got all the swap stuff for $200.
I'd say why don't you part your car, and don't jack other peoples threads, esp. project threads. Carl, get some pics up of the shell. I want to see what it looks like with the new wheels. |

Re: Project: Auto FWD
I love this car! And its fast as hell it went 101mph through the traps at grove creek spinning the tires. I can't wait to see it again with some auto trans action. Nice work carl!
If I don't make sense drunk posting FTW :D |
Re: Project: Auto FWD
^At 4 pm? lol
The wheel do look good like you said. I wish I could fit some good size rubber on the auto. Get that boost control via link working and you should be golden. |
Re: Project: Auto FWD
^been drinkin since 12:30 its snowin nothin better to do :D

Re: Project: Auto FWD
you might have to mod your intercooler pipe that goes from the fmic to your intake with the auto trans by the fact that is bigger i had to have my piping custom made

Re: Project: Auto FWD
^My bad. We were talking about your car for a while, sadly us like everyone else is out of cash.
I'd say part it out if you are going to go that low on the price, there are people nationally that will scoop up that trans and you could easily get your $3800 from a partout. Carl you will need to put a bigger cooler on that list and I would recommend a temp gauge. Ovaboost is right, I was looking at GH's IC piping and realized it would hit the solenoids for the AT trans if i was to use it. |
Re: Project: Auto FWD
Carl, i found out that you can use your old starter.
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
Yea definitly getting a bigger cooler and temp gauge Just forgot to put them on the list. Hopefully my IC piping will clear but if it needs to modifyed it wount be a problem. Heres a pic of what Im runnign now let me know if you think it will clear.

Sweeeet! I'm totally jealous, this is the exact drag setup/build I'd like to do some day! Can't wait to see what you do with it!!!
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
^x2.
it looks good, but I'd need a pic from the side between teh trans and piping to tell, I should just take a drive up. |

Re: Project: Auto FWD
Shoot me a call or something too if you ever need a hand too man. Like I said this is totally the build I want to do someday for an all drag setup. So it'd be a blast to lend a hand if you need.
612 384-1425 Good luck with it!! |
Re: Project: Auto FWD
Lend a hand? for sure, you have my info just let me know when, plus Bman is on teh way we can carpool if necessary.
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
I'll probly need a hand when it comes time to bolt the trans in the auto is alot heavier then the 5-speed.
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
it might clear i guess only one way to find out lol
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
its the wimpy way out, but the 8 million times i pulled out my awd auto trans i used a cherry picker. made my life simple
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
thats the way i pulled my trans there heavy compared to the 5speed. I usually just pull the motor with trans it makes it easier for me
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD

Also you are right, that AT trans is a lot heavier than the 5 spd, at least enough where I'm not even gonna try to do it again and I know my brother can't just throw them in like he does with the 5 spds. |

Re: Project: Auto FWD
It will still be a while before the tranny goes in. I'll need to restall my converter before that happens. I'm planning on starting on the wireing harness this weekend. I neet to ad in the plugs for the TCu and tranny. I'm also thinking about doing a little wire tuck while Im in there. Does amyone have any tips on pulling the harness? I've never done it before.

Re: Project: Auto FWD
I see your from Big Lake too, I got a 98 eclipse GST Automatic. What made you decide to switch to Auto?

Re: Project: Auto FWD

A little update.
I've made alot of progress since my last update. The auto trans is all bolted up.I just need a few more things to button everything up. I desided to go a little different route then I originaly planned. I bought Goodharts Nitrous kit and will be using it to stall up on the stock converter. I also ditched the idea of using a reprogramed TCU for the Kiggly manumatic mod. The Manumatic mod eliminates the need for a TCU or shift box. You simply put the shifter in the gear you want and the trans shifts a full line pressure . I will probly go with a ratchet shifter whern I havesome extra money. All I have left to do is: 1. Install the nitrous kit. 2. Put the center counsil and drivers seat in 3. Install trans cooler/ reinstall radiator 4. Put upper intercooler pipe back on ( from the looks of it it will just clear the trans) 5. Wire a few things. power to trans(kiggly mod), nitrous controled by DSMlink Pic of kiggly manumatic mod attached. |
Re: Project: Auto FWD
Are you kidding me?
You always make it sound like you have a shit ton of stuff to do. Fuckin' sunday we are meeting up and cruising in your car. (mine not be ready, ahahahahaha) Seriously, get that shit running or I'm taking that TCU. |
Re: Project: Auto FWD
Nice! I love your setup, you're building the drag car I wish I had the time, money, and space for...

2:00 AM progress update. I got alot done today. I got almost all the wireing except for the nitrous buttoned up. I got the cooler installed and plumbed, and Radiator back in. Got all the interior back in (even got my cigarette lighter working for laptop charging etc.) And I got the nitrous bottle mounted and line run to engine bay. Not mutch left to do till its driveable.
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
With the pick up tube in the nitrous bottle you are going to want to angle the outlet to the back, not the front. Looking good.

Re: Project: Auto FWD
I got the car running this morning. It runs good and the transmission seams to work so far( I only backed it down the driveway and drove it back up) . I need to top off the fluid in the trans now that is run to fill the converter and cooler, get a new battery, and get some E85 in the tank and I'll do some real testing. hopefully I'll have more updates later today.
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
SWEET!!!
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
Anymore progress? Wed night drags at BIR on teh 18th. :)
|
Re: Project: Auto FWD
Not a lot to update. I got the new battery in today. I need to pick up some new fuel. Hopefully that will make it idle and run better because it likes to kill when I shift into gear and has a studder when I free rev it. hopefully some new fuel and some tuning will get rid of that.

Re: Project: Auto FWD
I took the car for a test ride today and by the first impressions I am very happy. it shifts good using the kiggly manual mod. I did a few 20MPH to 100 MPH pulls going through 3 gears. once the turbo spoools the car pulls like crazy. Spins through first shifts into 2nd very fast and hard. Little to no wheel spin in 2nd. 2nd gear feels like it only lasts a second or 2. Shifts hard into 3rd. At this point I finally looked at the speedo as it goes past 80 MPH stayed in it a little in 3rd then let off.
Next step will be to get the nitrous working so I can stall up the stock converter and make some power before the turbo spools. Next time I take the car out I'll try to get a video of the tack and speedo while I do some pulls and try to get a data log. My laptop was fighting me this morning so I said screw it. |
