Makes me want to build a cheap, ugly auto car just for drag racing.

Maybe someday if I want to build a strictly race only dsm, I'd consider doing an Auto FWD thing-a-ma-jig.

I need proof thats a stock t-case. T-Case is the weakest link and 1.3 is insane on a stock one.

That is inspiration. Auto FTW.

So seriously, whats done to that auto to hold up to that kind of power? Most of us are pretty noob to AWD Auto dsm's...

High stall torque converter if I'm not mistaken..

And a upgraded valve body, tranny cooler and manual shift controller also I'm sure.

Aaron might now, since he's got an auto now

Yeah. I was only told about the converter and shiftbox for my Talon by a guy who said they can run 10's pretty easily.. But for the car in the video I'm sure it would require those as well.

blackrosenova400 08-28-2010 01:54 AM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

They have upgrades clutches in them and run 100% clutch pressure, upgraded cooler of course, tuned torque converter.

I will be going auto myself aswell.

CarPsyco84 08-28-2010 11:44 AM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

Yeah, the torque converter is key I'm sure.

santa 08-28-2010 12:35 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

Tq converter, full line pressure, end clutch's and a big ass cooler. My auto trans should be here later next week. I'll be making a build up thread on it and share my results. :)

turbotalon1g 08-28-2010 02:56 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

I didn't read back but until you pass 400whp thru the auto there really isn't much to worry about, I'd say brad, santa and maybe blackrose are the only people that need to worry about the auto.

I'm staying slow so I'm rocking a stock auto

Re: auto dsm moving out!

Autos are good for the 1/8 mile, but if you run the 1/4 and make some real power you'll run out of engine before you run out of track.

I dont get this statement, please elaborate.

If you watch the first video you'll see he's well into third gear by the end of the 1/8 mile. Check out the night time in car camera and you'll see he's about to bury the tach again in 3rd gear before he let's out. Only shift left would be OD. Add another 1/8th mile to it and you run out of gears. So unless you are building a really high revving 2.0L you'll be hitting your rev limit before you reach the traps. I've read where people look for taller tires, etc., to help keep the rpm down.

Re: auto dsm moving out!

Well I guess Im building a 2.1 then instead of a 2.4 :D

Those cars are all doing 150-160 in the 1/4 running high 8's No problem shifting into od(4th). Thats why the end clutch is a necessary upgrade. I rev my car to 8500rpm, and if need be I'll rev to 9000rpm on my 2.3. You'll want a bigger displacement motor for the auto just for the shear reason you'll need the lower end tq to get up onto the converter to launch. Most of these auto guys are using nitrous to get on the converter and then shut the nitrous off before they run down the track. I'm hoping to not need the nitrous!!

^You should do that from 7k about 15 times in a row and report back.

santa, just spray the whole damn time.

CarPsyco84 08-29-2010 06:34 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

15 times eh? I give it 2 times before something exciting happens, It'd be lame anyway cause you still wouldn't have any boost and it would bog big time.

1ViciousGSX 08-29-2010 06:45 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

If you can't build boost with an auto at the line you need a looser converter. Or at least anti-lag.

You can't use anti lag with a auto trans really. The trans is the load. You can only go so loose with the converter before you loose all your top end power. If I can get the converter to stall out at 4-4500rpm I'd be very happy with that. I don't think I'd need any nitrous then as my boost comes on hard.

1ViciousGSX 08-29-2010 07:43 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

I think you can run anti-lag with an auto, all it does is reduce the timing and richen up the mixture while engaged. But I never tried it, so I can't say for sure.

The whole reason why you need anti lag with a stick car is because there is no load being produced by the engine until you let the clutch out. The converter is what cause's load on an auto car. You will not need anti lag to launch.

turbotalon1g 08-29-2010 10:06 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

Anti-lag will actually hurt you trying to get up on the converter.

CarPsyco84 08-29-2010 10:16 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

Yeah, cause when your timing is retarded that far you loose all your power, you might be able to comprimise but adjusting the timing slightly around where it stalls, less timing spools faster, but makes less power...

Super Bleeder!! 08-29-2010 10:18 PM

Re: auto dsm moving out!

Orrr instead of worrying about losing top end from a loose converter, you can get one of the late model dsm autos that have lock-up converters.
