Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
So some of you might have heard I got a Subaru. Others might have heard I got rid of the GLH, I know sad day. I did however make sure the omni went to a good owner and so hopefully it'll see much brighter days in it's future.
On to the GC8, named "Sarah" after the first girl I had a crush on. Just like her this is the first car to give me a mental boner. At least that was in reach of owning someday, we can exclude the mental boners of the 80's when I saw the mighty countach. The Specs: 1999 Subaru Impreza RS2.5 146,000 Miles $2700 1.) EJ255 out of a 2006 Legacy 2.5GT @ 26k miles 2.) 3" X-Over Pipe (Brand?) 3.) 3" TBE (Brand?) 4.) STi Injectors 5.) '04 STi ECU 6.) '06 STi Gas Tank with Pump 7.) '04 STi Turbo 8.) '06 WRX Gauge Cluster (Fully Functional) 9.) '06 WRX Brakes (will do until I can get the mighty brembos) 10.) '04 STi 6 Speed Transmission (with fully functional DCCD knob) + STi Rear Diff 11.) STi Pedals (needed since it's drive by wire) 12.) Exedy Twin Disc Added 8/31/10 13.) '04 STi Hubs 14.) '04 STi Lower Control Arms 15.) '04 STi Struts 16.) '04 STi Dashboard 17.) '04 STi Seats 18.) '04 STi Momo Steering Wheel with air bag 19.) '04 STi Brembo Brakes 20.) Custom FMIC 21.) Polyurethane bushings 22.) Custom filled Polyurethane engine mounts. Added 9/14/10 23.) STi Sway Bars 24.) STi VF39 Turbo Pics Posts: Initial Tear Down Parts Gathering Engine Pulled, Dash Modification Starting to put parts back on Bigger Turbo and sway bars + Shane Welding Engine/Rear Diff Going back in Wiring Fiasco starts More wiring, full STi dash test fit STi Gauge Cluster/Boost Gauge installed. Money Shot, car back on ground Final of Phase One 257 AWHP final pics of dash THANKS/CREDITS: 1.) Lindsey my GF for putting up with this build :) 2.) Shane Carlson my oldest best friend that supported me and let me use his garage throughout this build and thanks to his welding. 3.) Charles "Spaz" for all the time he put in helping me and entertaining me. 4.) Tachyon for driving ALL the way here that one night to help me out 5.) My friend Mike another old friend that helped with the dash prep. 6.) My friend Alex who helped and entertained me. 7.) Hughes/Scheides for bouncing off ideas. 8.) Jeff the alignment guy for being awesome. 9.) Shane @ DB for putting in the time to help me work bugs out and tune her. 10.) Bill @ MAP for helping with parts. Phase TWO (Parts added throughout the Winter) 1.) 1998 Subaru Aluminum STi Hood 2.) Still deciding on a rear wing, maybe wingless like Scheides? :) 3.) Spiider.net DCCD controller with tuning software and gyroscope greatness. Final Goals: I would like this thing to be around 250-300AWHP, I know is crazy for these engines but I think it's possible once I get an FMIC, I'm even thinking about running E85 with this one to achieve my goals or putting a big turbo in it. Basically I would like to see a Subaru that can keep up with my Evo finally ;) (Goal Met) 257 AWHP @ DB! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij_FzFvf4LM&hd=1 http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7650707_n.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1407/...e1a4acef_z.jpg Comparison chart of my Evo IX's last tune vs the RSTi's tune, Mitsu FTW for sure but the low end torque on suby is so hawt. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1049/...a37b8be6_z.jpg |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Thats gonna be a fun ride

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Totally sweet cars when swapped.

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
yeah, these cars are fucking crazy...that or the subbie peeps are just crazy. My cousin owns the same model (4-door) with the jdm Sti engine, drive train, brakes, suspension, e85, etc and the thing goes. I believe he ran low 12s with e85+evo 16g. It's definitely a very solid car and a hell of a DD

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Good to see you've been moving ahead on this. I'll have to swing by and turn a wrench or two once that crate arrives. ;)

Very nice! Was awesome seeing this machine at exit 90 in Missouri!

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Awesome to finally see a picture of this thing. How long until you start wearing your flat bill hat sideways, go to a rallycrosses and think you're Ken Block?

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Awesome! I've always loved this gen wrx/sti! When they came to the US with the bugeye version I kinda died a little inside :( When I was in scotland I saw several evos (4's 5's and 6's, oh my!) and STi's (from this gen) that really made my heart flutter.
I'm really a fan of wingless, but on this gen I've always loved the standard wing, or even this one..I think it sets the body off just perfect: http://vorshlag.smugmug.com/photos/6...86_FrvTP-M.jpg |

nice.
jarrid has a ton of the stock fuel and other parts off his sti that he will sell for a good deal |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Thanks guys, yeah it's been my dream car for quite sometime. Other than a cherry picker and a few misc items I think the project has come together. The ECU is actually already wired, I just need to wire in the tail lights and the guy ran it sitting on the ground before sending it. But if anyone knows anyone with a Cherry Picker I would rent it or whatever!

I wouldn't even mind having a stock RS for a beater. My `96 lost its valves a little over 100k miles so I think the Subaru rep is a bit overdone. |

Does your mind only think straight ahead? Sounds like a very sick car when finished. I've loved the gc8 coupe chassis for a long time. X2 on subaru's being solid cars. My friend has a 92 Legacy gt 5 spd and it's been his reliable daily for 3 years now. |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Definitely my favorite Impreza body style of all time. Looks like a pretty sweet project!

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Sweet! Did you trade your Nike Pump shoes for this bad boy? I hope not!

Sweet to see yet another scoobaru on the dsm boards haha. I just swapped my 98rs about a month ago now and I love it...except I swapped in an ej25d aka another stock 2.5rs motor because I'm dumb. Good luck with the swap

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Updated the original thread, basically decided to do the powertrain plus all suspension geometry from an STi, plus the brembo brakes.
Here's some pics of my progress and the parts I've gotten. The Very Beginning http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6364191_n.jpg First of the Suspension off http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4206992_n.jpg My DS Fucking Spring was rusted in half!?!?! The car somehow drove fine too, ridic. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1332741_n.jpg What's left of the front bumper mount beam, I think? Seriously the Titanic is probably in better shape and more recognizable. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5312227_n.jpg Everything ready for the engine to be pulled... except the fucking engine hoist broke >:o http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4374068_n.jpg Beginning of the dash tear down. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1729471_n.jpg Dash Off and carpet out. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5024394_n.jpg About an inch of sand below the carpet, effin' MN http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2632144_n.jpg Another shot of the bare inside. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4704563_n.jpg Rear suspension off and diff chillin' http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...4_225380_n.jpg New engine + crazy ass wiring http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5943419_n.jpg New bitchin' header + up pipe http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4616554_n.jpg FUCKING rear x-member bolt that had a welded nut break off the frame, requiring me to cut open the chassis and re-weld it to the frame. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2135338_n.jpg STi gas tank vs old tank http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2088867_n.jpg Organizing wires as I disconnect them. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7207475_n.jpg Wires taken out and in a box. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...1_693520_n.jpg ALMOST ready to actually start putting parts BACK on ;) http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1472513_n.jpg |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
This weekend's goal is to get the new engine in and wiring figured out. That should take literally all three days.
If I'm lucky maybe I'll get some rust issues taken care of. But I THINK I might have this thing working by the cruise. It all depends on if I can secure the last of the parts, my neighbor's engine hoist works and of course I pull this off :) |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Good god, nice progress dude!!
I got some rims for you to test fit :) |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
looking good. looks like how i rip things apart for swaps
|
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
You going with an STi interior too? Or what is the reason for tearing the interior out?
|
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Thanks Brandon!
Thanks Mark! It makes me feel better, knowing you've done a few more of these than I have :) Yeah I'm doing all STi interior, have the seats, dash, steering wheel. Still trying to find a dash beam, blower motor and heater core. This care will be like 75% STi when it's done. Plus you need to rip all that stuff out to do an engine swap anyway, at least correctly to get to all the wires and clean it up. |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Good luck. Hope to see it out at firestone!
|
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Looks awesome so far! Great progress to say the least.
|
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Badass. Can't wait to see this thing on the road.
|
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
I still haven't made it over to turn a wrench on this thing...
If you were to not work during the day tomorrow, I'm free until 6 ;) |
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Awesome!
|
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
Wooty woot! Sweet progress dude!
|
Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
wow, mega work! GG

Re: Project GC8 AKA USDM STi Killer
So I secured a big chunk of the last parts I needed tonight.
'04 STi Rear Diff - $420 shipped '05 STi Dash Beam/Heater Core/Blower Motor/STi Wiring Harness $300 (have to pick it up in Duluth) '04 Early STi front drive shafts (female end) $120 Shipped. '04 STi struts $75 That'll get the dash, wiring and most of the suspension done. All I need now is wheels, once I get close I'll take a look at your wheels B-Dawg if you still have them for sale! I'm feeling pretty good about the swap so far, sorting the old wiring last night made a lot of sense to me so I'm hoping I can get the new wiring done without any problem. Now I just need to make a trip to MAP for some gauges and DB for a MBC. Get some rear diff fluid from Subaru (I guess that's the best bet), get some other fluids and get er done! It's gonna be a long weekend. |
