So yeah im lookin at gettin, a 97 eclipse gs. The only thing is its gotta hole in the block, and the guy is tryin to charge 4500 bucks for the thing. I dont have a problem switchin the engine or block but can you guys tell me if you think thats a little steep for a car that dont even run? I was thinkin closer to $1000-2500

This is what its got otherwise

~1997 Mitsu Eclipse.. Yes. lots of miles,(226,000 :razz2: ) but new EVERYTHING.. Needs new engine (hole in block - found engine for under a grand), Florida car, Many aftermarket & performance parts: Brembo slotted/cross drilled brakes, OBX Bomb exhaust, Dark Purple tint, reverse indiglo gauges, stainless steel dash kit, Sony Xplode CD, Iceman Cold-Air Induction, More

BuildADSM 04-26-2004 11:38 AM

Yeah I would say that is steep. The guy has mabey 3 grand in it aftermarket wise. In my eyes modifications do nothing to increase the value of the car if not decrease the value unless the car is extreamly fast. And yes to me it sounds steep for a car with so many miles and if the motor is new doesn't really matter if it has a hole in it. I know there was a eclipse (i think 95 but probably not as many miles) with a blown motor (don't know what model) in the local (tennessee) paper for 1500. Depending on condition I would say you are about right with the price range you were saying if it were me. I bet that you could talk him down.
Ask if he is on any dsm sites (dsmhorsepower.com, crankwalk.com) because I have some conections and could find out if it is any good.

goodluck and sorry for the long post
Stuart

Edit.
\/ that car is a great value for only about 2500 more (once running) and is immaculate. (know the guy) mabey it will help you compare and possably talk the guy down.

glempo 04-26-2004 12:30 PM

indeed it is...... are you stalking me? ;)
Yeah thats the car alright. I really want an eclipse and i dont exactly have alot of money.. I do have a dad who knows a shit load about cars, and then theres you guys..between the two, i think i could fix it, i just dont wnat to pay 4500 for a car id have to tow home!

v8klla 04-26-2004 01:11 PM

I bought my 95 GSX with a few bent intake valves for $2200...I would have to say that is more than a little steep, but I guess it is a 97?

i was planning on getting that car but realised there was the hole which wasnt worth all that money when couldve just gotten a car that wasnt defected.

glempo 04-26-2004 03:02 PM

well if some bent intake valves can drop the price that much im sure, a hole in the block will be at least that cheap. I think i should be able to talk em down, the damn thing has been up for like 6 months

alot of the time cars are just left up there and the ex-owners are just too lazy to take it down after the car has been sold.

glempo 04-26-2004 03:12 PM

I know about that too, im kinda worried about it, but im not gonna cry or nothin.. and id have to imagine that a person would get sick of gettin phone calls all the time and would eventually take it down.. either way i still gotta talk to the person. Isnt Keegan usaully a girls name?

Goat Blower 04-26-2004 03:51 PM

The guy is on crack. Those mods aren't worth a cup of piss for adding value to a car. I just sold a 97 Eagle Talon with 151K in beautiful condition for $2900. That car is worth about $1000.

Shane@DBPerformance 04-26-2004 09:09 PM

I wouldn't pay over $1000 for a running non-turbo 1G or 2G.

glempo 04-26-2004 10:51 PM

yeah i figured it was worth about a grand, my dad said it might be alittle low but whatever.. i know the shit aint worth no 4500 bucks. Any one on any good at bargaining with people..im sure could do it but any advise or help would be great :bounce:

Shane@DBPerformance 04-27-2004 09:41 AM

Why do you even want that car though? It had 226,000 miles on it and a blown engine. The mods you listed on it are worth about $0.13.

john 04-27-2004 09:58 AM

I am sure it is still for sale. On carsoup, if you don't renew your ad after 30 days it is automatically deleted. You should be able to find a 95 turbo eclipse or talon for around $4500.

On that 97, the kelly blue book is $4100 in good condition. Needing an engine would drop the car down to the poor catagory where they will not even give a price. In the fair catagory, the value is $3500. Not even close to the $4500 + the $1000 needed for a new engine + labor. If you are set on this car, search car-part.com first and get some quotes on the cost of an engine. If you cannot find an engine in MN it is definitly not worth getting. As far as taking him down, show him the value of it at kbb.com. Check it out and see what catagory you think it would fit in if it had an engine. Subtract the costs and offer him that amount. I would say it is worth maybe $2500 as is.

I wouldn't get it IMO. That car has probly been beat to shit. Since the engine is gone, how do you know that the tranny is fine. He beat on the engine so the tranny had to have taken alot of abuse also.

Buy a turbo model. You will be much happier.

glempo 04-27-2004 11:29 PM

Big suprise, the guy still has it... so yeah im prolly gonna go and check it out on sat.. do alittle talkin and what not. Hopefully i can get him down otherwise hes S.O.L. And as for the tranny being in bad shape, i plan on upgrading all the shit eventually any way.. so if i can get the actual body for cheap.. ill have more money to spend on new drivetrain stuff :D

A//// Guy 04-27-2004 11:40 PM

Why even bother upgrading a NA... its way not worth it in my opinion. Look for a blown turbo car. You can find them cheaper then or at the price of that NA. Maybe not as new but turbo is way better then no turbo. And turbo add-ons are gay.

I think you mean non-turbo mods are gey.

glempo 04-28-2004 12:35 PM

yeah im a little confused, do you mean if i built an engine an then added a turbo, thatd be Gay? If thats what you meant, how do you figure?

A//// Guy 04-28-2004 02:45 PM

No I meant a car that is originally NA and putting a turbo kit on it. In the long run it will cost way more than a built up Turbo-DSM. And then you are still stuck with FWD. Also the engine/tranny wasnt built for alot of power. So your setting breaking limits even lower than on a stock turbo dsm.

jimwross 04-28-2004 11:11 PM

I've owned both NT and Turbo 2G's:

~1997 Mitsu Eclipse.. Yes. lots of miles,(226,000 ) but new EVERYTHING.. Needs new engine (hole in block - found engine for under a grand), Florida car, Many aftermarket & performance parts: Brembo slotted/cross drilled brakes, OBX Bomb exhaust, Dark Purple tint, reverse indiglo gauges, stainless steel dash kit, Sony Xplode CD, Iceman Cold-Air Induction, More

With that milage on the body, even with a working engine, its not worth $4500.

They only thing really worth any money are the Bremo Brakes, everything else there is really not worth much, especially used.

A built 420a Engine, turbo kit isn't that terrible, although you'll end up dropping alot more money on it, then if you had just saved up and bought a turbo car initially.

If you look around, you can find a GREAT condition 2G NT for $3500 or less... considering the time you put in to it, the $$$ you'd spend fixing it, and the hastle, it'd be worth just buying a working one.

Although, if you plan to go the turbo route, there are decent GST's available for ~5k. It really is a decision that you'll have to make, NT is fine if you just want to rice it out, itll look good! But if you want to go fast... save for a factory turbo car (You'll always wish you had AWD if you dont buy it :-\)

glempo 04-28-2004 11:39 PM

OK... Im still gonna go look at this car and see if i can talk the guy down, Bt if any one that reads this knows where i can find, a 97 or later gst for cheaper than 10 grand, it would be sweet if they could hook me up. the only Gsts i find are on car soup, and the people that sell cars on there waaaay over price. so yeah if yall can help a brother out that would be sweet. :bounce:

vapour24 04-29-2004 06:46 AM

tell us how it goes after you see it and talk to him.. etc etc

BuildADSM 04-29-2004 08:03 AM

In my local paper (in chattanooga TN) there is a 95 eclipse gst with a crankwalked motor for 1200. If you are not looking for a local car this would be great because we don't get snow (probably a total of 8 inches since the car was made when downtown and not on mountains). Also if you are looking at a southern car that isn't local look at the link to the gst that I posted before. It is a good price in my book and in extreamly good condition.

Either way good luck.

Also I am guessing that the car is local because I doubt you would fly to FL to look at it.

Jakey's friend was trying to sell a 97 gst spyder a little while back. Search in the classifieds section on here.

Ok so i went to look at this car :razz2: It was straight up hoopty..

  • the switch for street glow was in the middle of the console (drilled in so there was a hole
  • The "stainless steel" dash kit was a bunch of sticker like cover things
  • The blown engine was the SECOND blown engine, the ffirst one got fucked cuz of the ice man
  • The really nice Brembo breaks were completely rusted
  • the car was dirty. inside and out.. especially the engine bay YUCK
  • flat tires
  • he wire the indiglow gauges wrong, so they stay on all the time
  • there was no antenna
  • some piece a crap neon llight on the hatch, plugged into the cigarette lighter
i think thats about it, but the guy seriously thouht his car was the shit.
the color was cool but thats about it, that and the sticker of hobbes inthe back window.. so yeah i know he wouldnt have gone down in price, so yeah ill just be finding myself a GS-t :bounce:
