Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Picked up a 87 Atlantic Blue quest two days ago around midnight. Its just a roller. Has dings which looks to be from hail on the roof and the hood. Had some squirrels living in it, found some acorns in the glovebox and under the wiper cowl. Plus the carpet had what looked to be squirrel shite all over it. The following day I started to remove the front end for small rust repair.

Then sprayed the front section and engine bay rails down with black rustoleum paint. http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs593...._1573894_n.jpg Edit "Friday April 29th 2011" Mod List Below Rebuilt Bottom End, Stedebani 95A Motor Mounts, Balance Shaft Elimination, Jet Valve Elimination, Throttle Body Rebuild, Krank Vents, MK1 Egr Block Off, GM Delphi Injectors, GM 110 Amp Alternator, Alternator Ground Strap, Transmission to Firewall Ground Strap, Dual Alternator Charging Harness, Optima Red Top, 1G Maf, TD05-12A, KDM Turbo Small Discharge Pipe, KDM Turbo Inlet Pipe, TEP Ovcp w/ Turbo-Xs Type H Bov, 14.5psi Boost Pill, 2.5" Catless Turbo Back, Stock Twin Tip Muffler, 83 Starion 2 Piece Crank Pulley, Rodded Stock Radiator, Accel Yellow Coil, Accel 8.8 Wires, Fram Oil Filter, Rotella T6 Full Synthetic, New Coolant Temp Switch, New Master Cylinder/Water Pump, A/C Delete, Abs Delete, Star-Orion Abs Line, Steel Braided Turbo Oil Feed Line, Charcoal Canister Delete, Anti-Roll Over Valve, 89 Ecu, 89 Airdam, 89 Rear Starion Shoulder Belts, 89 Rear Seats, 89 Hvac Panel, Grant Steering Wheel, Stedebani Short Shifter, Eibach Rear Lowering Springs, Suspension Tech Front Lowering Springs, Shp 8 Way Front Struts, Kyb Gr2 Rear Struts, 90/100 Watt Relayed Headlights Harness, H4 Headlight Housings, Silver Star H4's, 55 Watt Foglight Bulbs, Foglight Mod, Resprayed Flat Black. |

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Was raining on Tuesday. Removed some more parts off the 88 parts car to get it ready to be picked up by the body guy. Replaced the sunroof shield on the 87 project. Also cleaned under the wipers and removed the squirrel shite and acorns from that area. Hopefully I will be able to finish the engine painting on Thursday and replace the rotors and pads. Ordered a Star-Orion "Abs" bypass line and a Mokeeh Egr block off last night.

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Sprayed the rest of the bay, then it rained a few hours later. It was dry by the time it started to rain.

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
I'll sell you a brand new airdam just spray painted black for $200 bucks plus $20 for shipping. That's way better than you will find elsewhere, as far as I know.

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Those seats remind me of those super puffy winter jackets people always wear.

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Installed the one piece exhaust, had to use the engine lift to lift the entire car up in the air to do so.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3116105_n.jpg Isc, Tps and Dist plugs needed to be added to the harness. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1769786_n.jpg Wiring fun! http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5584586_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2881416_n.jpg Finished the wiring. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...2_878217_n.jpg |
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Hood, Fenders, Engine Bay Wiring, Maf Hard Pipe, Brake Master Cylinder, Steering Column, 89 Steering Wheel, 88 Auto Radiator Fan, Battery Tray, Relay Box, Igniter and a few other things were installed.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7953531_n.jpg Getting there. Need to do some minor wiring, add the front bumper and airdam. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5284358_n.jpg |
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Started the car and turned it around......Still needs some tlc.....
Installed the gas tank, changed the fill tube to tank rubber hose and added a anti-roll over vent. Anti-roll over vent has to be installed to vent the tank when you remove the charcol canister. Gas tank caps only allow to vent "IN" not "Out", the valve will go both ways but will close when liquid or alot of pressure hits it. The top left hose is the vent line, it wraps around and that little white ring near the zip tie is a fuel filter. Then it goes to up and sits above the gas tank lid, see next picture. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7048651_n.jpg Because I didn't want excessive fumes building up in the fender I added another hose which takes all the fumes and liquid if any to the ground behind the rear tire. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5840114_n.jpg |
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Need to add 2 bolts per side on the airdam and wire the horns.

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Since it has been on the road the following has been done, with-in a month lol...
Gr-2 Rear Shocks Suspension Tech Lowering Springs Painted The Valve Cover Yellow Accel Coil KDM Turbo Discharge Pipe Rotella T6 Wix Filter Red Top Optima Battery 105/110 Amp GM Alternator Alternator Bracket Two Alternator Charging Wires Fog Light Mod Update from yesterday! Hit 5,000 rpms the other day and noticed a pop in the car. There was a ton of vibration but no knocking noise. Thought a jet valve got stuck open. Pulled the valve cover and check everything. All up top seemed good. Checked the flywheel to see if it came loose, but that was also tight. Today I pulled the oil pan out and noticed a balance shaft bearing has walked out of where it's suppose to be. Since the shaft was rubbing the bearing it flared out the bearing. See the picture. Its not suppose to be out that far, its suppose to be flush. So now I will be ordering everything to get rid the the shafts altogether. Each way roughly 15lbs, so 30lbs off the rotating mass is like having a 1 ounce flywheel lol... Plus the oil pressure will go up once there gone. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3151714_n.jpg 6 piece Balance Shaft Elimination, Jet Valve Elimination, Valve Cover Gasket, Oil Pump Gasket, Timing Cover Gasket Kit, Oil Pump O-Ring and Oil Pan Gasket = 110 bux shipped. |
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Yep, Balance shafts make the motor nice and smooth, but things like that can happen.
|
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Pulled it all apart today. Just need to clean up some parts and wait for the parts from "Dad" vendor on SQC to come in the mail. I'm removing the yellow paint from the valve cover.
Paint will be Intercooler pipes "Wrinkle Red" Valve and timing cover "Wrinkle Black" Other parts and brackets normal gloss black. |
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Its been on the road for 2 weeks. Wrinkle black the valve cover and timing cover.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...9_720951_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4303359_n.jpg I have Eibach Pro springs coming and rear d2 fixed strut tops also coming in the same box. |
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Added some parts to it, including these rare hard to find death mounts. Stedebani only made a few on the first run and then stopped making them due to everyone complaining they were too stiff. They are rated at 95A durometer.
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2433874_n.jpg http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5858199_n.jpg Decided to not sell the Grant Wheel, so I installed it. The above mounts were making the radio controls vibrate "noise" on the factory wheel. http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6642978_n.jpg Eibachs in the rear and Suspension Tech lowering springs on the front. Also just painted it flat black yesterday lol. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3838469_n.jpg http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6260132_n.jpg 240Z bolt on master cylinder reservoirs got rid of the single corner mounted one. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7917832_n.jpg Will update the first post shortly with a mod list! |
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
pretty sweet ride

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
Updated the bottom of the first post with current mods.

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
FYI, the '88-89 Starquests have a different steering wheel with radio controls on it. (read no fake chrome/peeling or noise)
|
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
I like the way it looks with the flat black paint. Love those motor mounts too...lol
|
Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
That flat black looks really cool actually!

Re: Rebuilding the 87 Conquest TSI
