Battery location?
 

So my yellow top optima took a shit on me with in the last couple days....... I am debating on either putting a small battery kit in the engine bay or maybe doing a relocation to the trunk with a box and cut off switch.

I'm not too fond of having to cut a hole in the back of my car but would love the free space in the engine bay. I know that alot of evo guys do the small battery kit so anyone can jump in and give some info on the subject.

I know that brad put his battery in the back with a box and am talking to him about the matter aswell. The kit from JMF is about $300 dollars but is a direct bolt on and they show pictures of it in the car on there site.

Any input would be great as to I'm still torn between the 2.

from my understanding its better to just leave the battery in the engine bay, no real reason to move it to the back.

better to go with a small battery kit

also the battery kit comes with the battery

Ya I was thinking that aswell but it would save me SO much room in the engine bay for extra goodies.:D

i've never had one, but i would personally like the relocation to the trunk. you get engine bay space, makeing it look cleaner. you'd have a dry open area if you need acess to it. and the cutoff switch wouldn't be a bad thing to have.

but if you do, mount the switch somewhere where the passsenger can't get at it. i've heard of ppl flippin to mess with the driver at a stop light.

the small battery kit mounts very low in the engine bay, and is very small. i dont think relocating it to the rear saves a whole lot more space overall vs the small battery kit

I was mostly thinking about putting a oil catch can breather in that location just like swifty and brandon " redline ".. If you ever saw there cars you would know that it takes up that whole corner but its not needed at this time of my build. But I'm thinking in the future.

yea i had to look at it again in the picture, its a little different in the 1g cars and it sits differently too.

id still go with a small battery kit vs a full relocation with the dsms though.

if it was a RWD vehicle i would say do a relocation, but these cars dont benefit much, other than space savings

Space saving is the whole point. But like I said I'm not sure that I would want to do the whole relocation thing either. $300 is kind of a lot for a battery and some metal but if I was going to do it now would be the time.

the other big things vs space i see, is the battery alone is 140 bucks, and offers some good cranking power. the other thing is, it weighs alot less then a standard size battery.

if its space you want, relocate by all means. if you can live with a little less space go with the small kit. or run a smaller catchcan

Smaller catch can can cause issues down the road.. I personally like the rear mount setup..

^ Everything you say has its good points and I thank you for that I might just order this battery kit for the time being and then in the future if it comes to it just relocate the battery into the back. Still not too fond of cutting that hole in the back where the tail lights are to put that switch in.. Thanks veridion for your input.

After this conversation I'm leaning more twards just going with the kit but if someone esle thinks differently please give your opinion.

there are MANY ways you can do the cutoff switch. I saw a camaro with the push/pull rod that was mounted just below his rear bumper so he didn't need to cut anything. MY battery cutoff is were the keyhole for the trunk was. You can do a push pull, or drill a hole and route it, or you can hide it behind the license plate so you put the handle on it, with the plate off for the track, but then take the handle off, and put the plate back on for street duty. All on how creative you get.

all things considered i still get the small battery kit, your still gonna end up spending a bunch because of the battery itself, and if you dont like the small kit in the future you can either sell it, or move the whole thing to the back.

Personally, i'd rock the trunk..I like an empty engine bay, makes working on it easier. No risk of accidentally dropping a wrench on a terminal or metal ic pipe and shorting something out. Plus, that step when you "disconnect the battery" before everything? Ya, flip the switch..done. :)

I have both. The talon has it in the trunk. It has a yellow top. It has been that way for 5 years now. Never have had a problem with it in the back.

I have a small battery kit in the evo. Also works just great. The only down side they go dead after a few weeks of sitting. I did the small kit in the car because I picked up the battery abd bracket for 150.00 used. Other wise I was going to put it in the trunk.

The other thing to think about. Is if you use your trunk the battery and box take up a lot of room in a 2g. You can also hid the on/off switch on a 2g behind the lic. Plate so you don't have to cut holes.

I vote drop the stock battery to the cross member. Frees up space, doesn't require any conversion kit, and you don't have to run any wiring.

I figured I would just answer your PM here so everybody could see it. I've had a "small battery kit" (read tractor battery) and an optima located in the trunk, I like having the battery in the trunk more than I did the small battery up front. I like having my battery in the trunk because if you trap 135+ you're supposed to have a cut off switch anyways no matter where the battery is, frees up space in the engine bay, its really hard to drop a wrench on a battery when its in the trunk, and makes it one less thing to get in the way when pulling the motor.

This was the custom front battery mount I had. It bolted up to where the stock battery support bolts up, but it sat right on the frame rail. I only had it for a couple months in the summer and always started the car just fine.

Here is the setup for the trunk. Just a Jegs battey relocate kit, a Taylor box, and an optima battery. Its a lot more weight than the small kit but its nice having a full sized battery too. The switch is behind the license plate, so with it on nobody knows whats behind it. I've also never been questioned about its location when going through tech at the track either.
