Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

Backstory: I used to own a 98 gsx and since I've sold it, I have never really had that feeling where I just enjoy driving around. I bought a 98 subaru 2.5rs and I loved that thing because it was a great summer/winter car. The thing handled like a champ but lacked in the power department. The subaru blew up on me when I was drivin to my first ice rallycross this past winter. Since then, it's just been sitting on my driveways with the motor/tranny in my attic. I've been looking for a replacement motor, but they are pretty hard to come by since I need the 2.5dohc. Well, I got a sweet internship so I had to breakdown and buy another car to get to work. So I dropped a few bucks and bought a 1990 honda dx hatch. It's been great to rip on and gets from point a to b with no problems.

Anyways, my roommate told me about this 1991 Galant vr4 for sale here in town and we went to check it out today. The guy is asking $1000 for it, but it sounds like he's pretty open to offers since he's getting a new car and doesn't have much need for it anymore. There's about 230,000 on the car, hg and timing belt done about 50,000 ago. The thing started up like a champ and seemed to idle just fine. Only bad things that I could see was the interior was a little rough, the e-brake was unhooked, the hood and fenders are fairly dented up from his buddies daughter who rear ended a truck a few years ago. He said the car drives smooth and it's been pretty reliable for him in the past. He also said he gets between 10-20 mpg depending on how he drives. That seems like quite the range to me, and honestly I kinda like my honda getting upper 20's easy. So, help me out guys. Should I stick with my crappy honda until I can fix and sell the subaru, then buy something nicer? Or should I ditch the honda and suby and pick up this vr4 till I'm outa school? lmk what you guys think.

Here's a few pics because, well...pics are fun.

lol he said the terminal was loose, so he just clamped it with a vice grips and it's been fine for over 2 years lol.

Basically I'd get rid of my honda and offer that to this guy for his vr4. Here's my honda with 190,000:

Re: Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

For reliability sake, I would walk away from the GVR-4 and keep the Honduh. If money is tight, the last damn thing you need is another 4g63 haha

Re: Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

Just like I told you already offer him 800.00 of it. If I did not have 6 cars already I would come up there and buy it my self

No you shouldn't.

Re: Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

to me the vice grips speak for the whole car. if the owner is that lazy that he cannot properly fix a problem like that.....

Re: Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

i'd offer 700 because of the mileage. That's definitely the wrong battery for the car also. BUT 700 for a running gvr4 is a pretty good deal. Like Goodhart said also; if money is tight, save the honda till you get more $$$ and sell the subbie.

Re: Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

As tempting as that would be for any DSM'er to pick up I'd say stick with the Honda for now until you can afford something nicer. That's definitely a down grade in condition from your GSX.

Especially if you need it for reliability. Roll the Honda, fix the lesbomobile, then sell both and pick up a nicer DSM.

Re: Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

I'd offer 800. I've always wanted a GVR4 and that one doesn't look in too bad of shape. Sure it needs a hood fender and grille, but all that stuff is pretty cheap. If I had the extra money laying around and didn't already have a project car, I'd pick it up.

Yup pretty sure that's the kid. He texted me all sorts of newbish questions for the first month or so that he had the car. Heck the kid had never even driven a stick when he showed up to buy my car lol. He had an idea and learned quick, but I still had to teach him using my dsm lol.

Thanks jason. I keep hoping that one day when I have the time and space, I'll get another one and build it right.

It looks rough, but if you think it is solid mechanically it seems like a pretty decent deal.

I knew you'd miss DSM's someday. haha

A rusty non-turbo 1.8L 1g? What a steal!

On another note, where is this 91 VR4?

If you could PM me his contact info I'd greatly appreciate it :D

lol I missed it right away, but I don't think I regret selling it. I made a pretty penny off that car, and well...I'm confident I could do it up again cheaper/better now that I kinda have an idea about dsms. It'll have to wait until I have a little more space though. I've learned that modding a dsm as a dd is not a good idea. Which is probably why this gvr4 isn't for me. Thanks guys.

No...if anything just buy an Evo. At least then it won't be a 20 year old rusty piece of shit.

p.s. after the dynoday at db idk if I want an evo anymore. Everybody and their mom owns one!

That's because all the DSM's are broken and never make it out of the garage anymore.

And all the DSM owners wised up and moved on to a better, non-rusty platform LOL

Re: Opinions needed: Should I return to dsms?

The galant made it from Fargo to Rogers to the dyno and back to Fargo with ZERO problems!

GH you might be correct. dsm owners grew up. I have one more semester before I'ma grown up lol

That was a weird dyno day...a Black on E85 could have taken high hp honors. I imagined that at least one of the big boys would have shown up for a trophy.
