Marshalltown Autox

A few of us have discussed making a trip to one of NQS Performance's autox events down in Marshalltown, Iowa this summer.

http://nqsperformance.com/AutocrossSeries2010.aspx

The dates are:
May 22
June 12
July 10
August 21

The general consensus has been that July would be the best month, but we can discuss and make a final decision here if there's enough interest. Myself, Asshanson, and Swifty have run there and had a blast.

You'll get 2 sets of points runs as well as a set of fun runs, which if I remember correctly will come to 6 runs; each being ~2.8 laps.

So, who's in?

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I can make any of those dates except July 10th. I'm definitely in for this, it's a blast!

Maybe spaz can beat my time this year ;) Or better yet, see if I can beat my DSM time in the V!

Re: Marshalltown Autox

Do you guys just make this a full day thing or an overnight type event? If it's only a day event I might be able to swing the July 10 date, but the August day would work better for me.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

August 21st looks like a possible date for me because I'll be going to Thailand throughout June and July.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I would probably drive down Friday night and come back Saturday afternoon. I know I don't want to leave here at 5am Saturday morning.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I would like to be a part of this auto x.
I have to get the eclipse legal like a battery box in the back but it should be a blast.

Either that or I would have to take a lap with the scummit.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

June 12 and August 21 work for me, but there are MAC autocrosses those Sundays though I have no problem missing them.

Would we be going down and coming back in the same day, or spend the night and party it up?

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I'd say go the night before, be somewhat rested, and not wore out from the 4 hour drive starting at 4am (guessing check-in would start around 8am)

Re: Marshalltown Autox

We'd be better off staying overnight somewhere, when I was down there last year I stayed with a buddy on Friday night and we got a hotel in Waterloo on Saturday night.

I'm just telling you what we did last time, and that definitely was not my choice. Ames would probably be the best place to stay for us.

asshanson 05-05-2010 12:24 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

Hell yes, Ames rocks. Not as much in the summer though.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

Track looks awesome, do u do the whole thing?

asshanson 05-05-2010 01:24 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

Yep, everything but the small section at the top that is blacked out. It gets a bit scary coming down the first stretch going 90, then making that wide left going pretty fast still, only to be followed up by another long straight.

cmspaz 05-05-2010 03:01 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

Anyone with a modded DSM should be hitting 3rd on the back straight, no problem. I averaged around 58mph around the track on my fastest lap in the Talon.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

Haha, I'm going to be in the Non-V8 Race class.

cmspaz 05-05-2010 05:49 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

My intake alone pushes me into non-V8 Modified, thanks to having a stock turbo. Oh well.

Matt D, your only competition in that class, if he shows up, is Jeremy(Prez)'s Evo. I'm not sure what all he's got done to it, but he put down FTD last time I was there.

asshanson 05-06-2010 01:01 AM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I guess I'm in V8 race? Sucks to be me since I'm on street tires, but I'll still have fun.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I think august 21 would work for me. Gives me more time to get some new tires figured out...

Re: Marshalltown Autox

i vote august 21st as well give me time to the talon finished probably wont run but it would be a cool drive and watch the runs

cmspaz 05-07-2010 08:03 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

August is fine for me, do we want to plan on that? That looks like it's the date that the most people can attend (Sorry Andrew).

asshanson 05-08-2010 08:19 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I'm good with August, it's the July date I can't make.

I'm also down for going May 22nd, anyone else ready to go?

I might be up for the 22nd. No guarantees though...

cmspaz 07-31-2010 09:18 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

The 21st is less than a month away, time to start making plans, asking for time off, and more importantly, figuring out lodging and travel plans!

At the very least we need to get a list going:

1) Charles, cmspaz, 03 Evo

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I'm still a maybe for this. Car is up and running good, just funds are low now. Seems to always be something!

I'm going to pass. MOWOG 6 is that Sunday, then I leave the next Friday for the SCCA divisional in Lincoln, NE.

Done :D

1:23.43, 52mph average.

Faster than any Subaru there.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I went to the NQS Autocross at Marshalltown this weekend, and all I can say is I have a lot to learn about driving RWD on a track. My best run was 1:23 and change, the vid I have is a 1:24 time and going a little sideways from too much throttle out of a turn (happened a lot, I need to learn more right foot control). A stock c5z was running 1:21 times and a few new Boss 302 mustangs were in that range too I think.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

Were you on the slicks? You could spend a lot more time on the throttle with more grip, comparing to my 1:23 run last year I spent more time loud than quiet, with a lot of corner exits slightly sideways.

asshanson 06-13-2011 12:30 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

No, I was on the street tires. I need to get used to those before I step up to slicks.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

i might be down for this.

Re: Marshalltown Autox

This was last year's thread that I bumped. The next date is July 9th, and then August 20th. I can't make the July date because of a wedding, but I hope to be at the August event.

cmspaz 06-13-2011 10:53 PM

Re: Marshalltown Autox

I've got a time off request in for the 9th, I normally stay with a buddy down there, but depending on how much I spend at Proving Grounds I may be able to be convinced to share a hotel room.

Anyone's interested, let's start talking.
