Machine Shop, O Ring head
Anyone have experience with a machine shop in the area that has cut their head for O ringing? I called a couple places in Mankato and got a long pause followed by a "we don't do that here".

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
My brother knows a few different people that have done his 12-valve cummins heads, I'll post em up for ya when I get ahold of him.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
thank you

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I called Gosh and he said he hasn't had to do it for anyone around here so I don't need it and then followed by saying he doesn't have the tooling for it, but he could do it but be ready to pay for the extra time.
That was a few months ago. |

Whats the point? Unless your head/block surface isn't very flat, a MLS should be more than enough.
But, you may be shooting for tractor-pull boost levels. |
Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Im surprised dsmers havent done this more often with the boost levels some of you are running.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I've heard of shops in other parts of the country charging about $40 per cylinder.

Blechinger Diesel, is the place that did Cody's motor. It is in Ham Lake. (763) 434-7050

Diesel shop for the win!

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
If I recall correctly, I had it done for either 20 or 25 per hole, but it was done to my block. I might be able to dig up a receipt, but you maybe can call the shop I used. It's the Carquest machine shop in Hopkins 952 935 0120, ask for Joe.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
So all this talk about ringing the head or block... what do you use for the ring then?

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
That's what I did. Stainless steel "safety" wire. Then a regular gasket. But I surpassed my old boost level (by one psi) and it held together, so in my mind it works. The true test will be 30psi. Also, I think it would be better to o-ring the block since it's probably easier to get the groove centered on the bore. With a head, the bore centers might be slightly different than the block or inconsistent from hole to hole.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I run 35+ psi with a Fel Pro Permatorque and Arp L19's. Unless you are running crazy ass cylinder pressure, you dont need to o-ring your block.
Proper preparation is the main key, make sure your block and head are straight and your good to go. |
Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
$200 head gasket, no
|
Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Brads car runs 30 something psi plus a 100shot with the permatorque and L19s. At least i think that what he has.

Well you have to play to play sometimes....

Plus you missed the fact I said.....
Preperation is key! I see diesels everyday at work that run 30+ psi of boost with 18:1 compression, and they have composite head gaskets! |
Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I run a cometic HP and A1's..no issues, not even under boost like most dsm's do on the dyno.

9Guy9, If you get this done, be sure to post pics! I want to see a fire ringed 4g63.
I see no problem with getting it o-ringed. You don't have to do the same thing everybody else has done. This way, even if you do have to pull the head for some reason, you're only down $40 for a headgasket and not $200+ |
Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
if I do it I will post up some pics.
To be totally honest I am really burnt out on this car. It may tun into a big part out. I have owned it for over 10 years and it has been the cause of 100's of headaches. I only drove it once last year thinking I would be excited to get it out this year. But I really am not, and I already have a long list of changes to make it more drivable. |
Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Also know that I did mine because the G54B has no awesome aftermarket gaskets like that, or A1 or L19 studs and most people have problems with more than low 20's.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Just get the head and block deck sealing surfaces ground down to a mega flat surface, then hit them with some copper spray and slap them together.
NO HEADGASKET NEEDED HABOOSH!!! GIT ERRRRRR DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN (i hate saying git'r'dun btw) |
Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
I agree with goodhart on this one.

Re: Machine Shop, O Ring head
Well, since I work at a machine shop... this is kind of a no brainer... I can toss the head in a cnc and cut whatever I want into the head to seal it. and like Goodhart said. $40 bucks when it comes time to change if you have to is alot better than a $200 head gasket and hundreds in machining and you have to pull the whole motor. Obviously the block and head have to be fairly flat for anything to work, but not ridiculous flat for a mls.

Unless it is a Cometic. Those things suck. I went through 2 of them with fresh surfaces and ARP's running 23psi with a good Shane tune. The surfaces have to be beyond perfect apparently. |
