1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD
The new project begins.
I haven't posted much on this forum before, but here's to some new beginnings. So a bit on the background before we head straight into everything: Bought the car last Friday (9-11-09) from a guy who's on the forum. There's quite some done to it right now, and the engine upgrades aren't going to go too much further other than internal work and machining. And now I'll get one with it: ACT 2600 clutch with street disc 255 LPH fuel pump Small 16G 550s Greddy Type S 3" exhaust 2G MAF DSMLink KYB GR2 struts Lowering springs (don't know brand) New tie rod ends New front brakes New front axles Redline fluid in transmission solid shifter bushings emissions removed 2G injector clips new coolant hoses 2G TB elbow new plug wires Auto Meter Phantom boost gauge There's an FMIC kit that he tossed in as well that needs to be put in. Going to wait on that until I actually get some time to do it. I'll be picking up a wideband soon enough to get some tuning on it and get some more potential horsepower. I'll post some pictures up later of the body and the engine (512 MB RAM, 1.2 GHz Pent. 3. FAIL) The goals I have for it, not shooting for a horsepower goal or a 1/4 goal, just shooting for a good build that I'm happy with. Engine: Forged pistons P&P head 1MM valves Dual springs Titanium retainers Cams (though not sure on what I'd like to go with 264/264 maybe?) Lightweight pulleys Wire tuck Drivetrain: Lighter flywheel (any recommendations?) 4 bolt rear end Shep/TRE rebuild kit with taller 5th Brakes: Slotted rotors front and rear 3/S calipers Body (here's where the money comes in): Paint job to stock Rust taken care of (not too much actually) Rear wing clips Passenger side fender Front bumper So, that's the basis of the build. Not too much engine work to be done at all. Sticking with the small 16G, though I might later on upgrade to a Big 16G, but depending on the lag, an EVO 3 16G might take the B16G's place. |

So far so good. It's nice to have something that can move down the highway and the backroads really well in comparison, to, well I'll just say it; Geo Metro. Yeah, fail of epic proportions.
Those are the complete plans for it (yeah, right). Oh, quick question, where's the sign-up for the DB meet in October? |

Sounds kinda like my car minus link and plus cams. I have hks 264's, and like them quite a bit.

There is no need to build the engine just keep it stock they can hold a ton of power. Ask C3L1CA about it he is making a ton of power on a stock bottom end.
Get a set of hks cams look into 2722's. You can run them on the stock valve springs also For a flywheel act work great For a tranny get a basic rebuild with a 4spider diff and you will be ready to go. |

Nabbed some pictures of the Talon a week or so ago. Have yet to get a good one of the engine. Might pop off the hood to get some better shots. The engine and the bay aren't nearly as clean as the last Eclipse that I had, this one still has yet to be taken care of by me.

Brought my car into the shop at Hennepin Tech to check on the alignment and wow it's horrible.
FL and FR Caster and Camber RL and RR Camber and Toe DSM lists front caster and camber as to be non-adjustable so it'll lead to drilling some holes or getting camber plates. I'd've adjusted the rear camber and toe, however I didn't have time to heat up the bolts and spray PB Blaster on them to get any adjustments down. The steering rack is also out of whack, time for a new one of those. FR wheel bearing seems to be going out, so there's a change. Also noticed that the rear brakes need to be done and should have been done about 5,000 miles ago. Parking brake also needs to be adjusted. Huh boy. Time for some work ahead of me to getting it not looking like a drift set up. Damn camber and tire wear. Wideband should be ordered pretty soon here at the next pay check so I stop running so damn rich. |

Picked up a wideband today for $160. Yep, used. About 2000 miles on the gauge itself and 200 on the O2 sensor.
Since this is my introduction to tuning, is it necessary to hook up the blue wire (serial) coming out of gauge to the DSMLink serial cord, or can I just let it alone and Link'll do the rest? |

CHeck th4 link wiki for info on hooking up inputs to the ECU.
There are a few choices, i used the baro input. I would say look into 264/272 combo I have it and I love it, esp since u dont seem to care for a lot of power and want more a street machine. |

Yeah, definitely looking for a street machine. Nothing incredible and out there. I think the tops that I'd be going for would be around 400 BHP, maybe a little more to give Vettes a run for their money.
Cams will still be a decision later on though. I was thinking the 264/272s, but brand I don't know which I'd be going with. Definitely want new if I'm doing it. Yeah, still got the side mount; still attached to the stock piping...Aw, fail. VR Speed FMIC would be awesome of course, cheap and from what I hear they're decent. |

Wideband is in! Time for a quick tune, set up the SAFC as well just for fun, add in the power inverter (super mega ultra bad battery in the POS Dell), and get her goin'. Also have to wire in the blue wire to the serial port and for that I gotta find the Chilton's.
Any suggestions? |

No one around here talks in BHP, its about WHP. lol.
On flywheels, I've had both popular ones. Fidanza and ACT. I like the Fidanza's replaceable friction surface. I think the ACT is more street appropriate. I'm making about 450awhp on DB's dyno on a stock bottom end and headgasket 4G63. And it's conservative, reliable HP (at least in my mind). Brad (Cel1ca) is making amazing power on his stock 4G63, but he even knows sooner or later it will go. |

I guess WHP it is then! Found out a problem though I'm not sure where it's coming from. Eating up oil pretty good. I have a feeling it's coming from the seals on the turbo, but I haven't looked into it much. And I've learned that I've got to check for some vacuum leaks given the idle surge. Also have to grab a new turbo manifold since there's a crack right down the top middle. Anyone have any suggestions that are in a good price range ($300-$450)? Word on the Treadstone Performance manifold? |

A new evo3 mani would be a major improvement. Otherwise the forced performance one is sweet for the money too. Both would be at the lower end of that price range (means more money for other stuff). Tubular is nice for big power but cast is for sure the best bet for reliability.
How much oil are u using and any noticable smoke? A boost leak test and a squirt bottle with some dishsoap water will find that leak in a snap (plus help clean up any greasy crap). BTW pretty sweet ride. I gotta say Im a little jealous for how clean it is. Wish my 2g had the lack of rust your 1g does. |

I would in an instant reccommend the FP Race cast manifold. Stock fitment, great flow, and is very reliable. Good price also.
Look online on how to make a boost leak tester, very easy, and one trip to a hardware store. |

The only thing that I was worried about it was the price; seeing as it's so cheap, then again, it's cast and not really that expensive to produce, fits in the stock location without any terrible modification whatsoever (extend oil feed lines, etc. if applicable). Any numbers on either manifold, Evo 3 and FP?
Already got a boost leak tester, came with the vehicle. I will be doing the dish soap/carb cleaner leak tester pretty soon here, but first I've got to fix the new starting issue (Doesn't Start Much anyone?). Going along the lines of either the starter relay (since it is missing its casing and wrapped in duct tape: FAIL! or the ignition relay; aftermarket alarm system appears to have been installed before I owned the car which could account for a lot of voltage drop across the wires or a huge short to ground with a lot of resistance). Haven't gotten a chance to test it outright as of yet given work today, but tomorrow after work it'll get done and fixed, provided I have the necessary wire. For how much that it burns, at a rough estimate, I'd say around 2 quarts in three weeks. Waaay too much. Had it been a 1/4 quart in two weeks I could stand, but at the much burning, good lord. |

So I'm looking for a decent quick fix that will allow me to save money in the future because of the damned gas mileage. Anyways, question is, would I run a bit too lean with the 450s and the 16G? I've heard both ways, with different set ups and the same set up, so that's why I'm rather concerned. Got Link and A'Pexi wideband to monitor just in case it does start pinging or going lean. |

A little update on what the hell's going on with the Talon.
Running really rough a few days ago while my roommate was borrowing it to get to and from work and school. Idle fine, but then bog down to roughly 300 RPM, then shoot back up to normal. The intake gasket had a/many holes/was completely destroyed. Replaced that a few days ago. Two days later my back left wheel fell off on Highway 10 while on my way to work. No visible damage, nothing seems tweaked. Still idling rough, ran a code 44 Ignition coil (cylinders #1 & #4) fault. That's pretty obvious after replacing the plugs since it needed to be done anyway. No, no Iridiums just yet, just cheapo NGKs. Going to test the coil soon and replace the spark plug wires as well, adjust the BISS, check TPS, adjust throttle cable, check any other related ignition sensors. Still have to buy manifold studs to get the 2G turbo mani on and ready, then replace some more vacuum lines just for safety and then on to some tuning...finally. |
