Evo X upgrades
On Sunday my cousin helped me to install the radiator, fan shroud, Perrin intercooler, UR uicp/licp, and the Specialty-X exhaust from the DP back.
I still have quite a bit to get on the car: coilovers, rear swaybar, PSRS, short-shift, o2 downpipe, and gauges. It's nice to have some of the boxes out of the house, though. http://mlomker.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8...5aafb16970c-pi |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Looks really nice! I like that CF rad plate/intake air guide.
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
Looks great, but isn't that valve cover cover hitting that intake pipe?

Re: Evo X upgrades
These engine bays are just really unappealing to me. There's not enough going on there. So many covers lol.

Re: Evo X upgrades
Ended up being a 6 hour job start to finish but I managed to get my downpipe installed today. Yup, it's a bitch like most people say.

6 hours? Dang! Any pics of it installed?

I went with a Specialty-X tbe and this was the last piece I needed to get on. I was surprised that the spool/power change was enough to feel on the drive home. http://www.specialtyx.com/images/exhaust/downpipe1.jpg |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Looking good sir! I would love the opportunity to help you source some of these parts AND save you some money ;)

Re: Evo X upgrades
Some more Sexay arrived in the mail today. MAP doesn't appear to carry these, so E-Bay it was!

Re: Evo X upgrades
Got the UR Walbro and fuel filter kits on the car. I'll be scheduling the tune tomorrow! I'll ask the tuner to install my AMS fuel rail, DW 800 injectors, and Perrin 3-port right before the tune. I didn't see a point in pulling the fuel rail today if it has to be pulled to install the injectors. I'm going to throw in a set of NGK iridium plugs the night before I bring it in.
Here's the dyno chart from MAP pre-tune...drops below 10 afr pretty quickly. Mitsu likes to drown Evo motors. http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5311736_n.jpg |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Man I feel like a total douche for talking to you about your car nonstop at porky's and the dyno day and I never even saw this thread! I guess I've been blinded by pre-dyno day stuff, all the parts look good! I can't wait to see how it does after the tune!

My plan is suspension first thing in the Spring (so that I can do auto-x and HPDEs) and by Fall I'll go with a new exhaust manifold, turbo, & maybe the Blitz surge tank. I'm leaning toward water/alky over E85 but I need to research that some more. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Threw on an o2 anti-fouler (we'll see if that kills the CEL) and a new set of NGK M40XL iridium plugs tonight. Tune @DB tomorrow! I'm stoked.

Re: Evo X upgrades
10a. I'm going to have them install an AMS fuel rail, DW800's, and a Perrin 3-port right before the tune.
I'm a little concerned that the fuel line that came with the fuel rail isn't long enough to reach the UR filter on the firewall but we'll see how it goes. The fuel rail is just :bling: anyway. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
I underestimated how long my visit at DB would be, but I think the results speak for themselves.
I arrived at 10a and Shane and Brian went to work installing the AMS fuel rail, Perrin 3-port, and DW800 injectors. That took until about 11:40. Strapping the car onto the Dyno required pulling part of the undertray so it was a little more time consuming than the routine at MAP. Shane had finished dialing the fuel in and suddenly the AFRs went to 16. Shane and Brian spent the better part of 45 mins experimenting with the tailpipe o2 sensor and finally Shane threw in the towel and suggested plugging it into the rear o2 bung. When he looked under the car he discovered that the midpipe had disconnected behind the cat! In retrospect I should have known something was wrong because the car was sounding mean, I saw smoke in the wheel well, and my eyes were stinging from the exhaust. Silly me...the Specialty-X exhaust didn't come with lock washers so I didn't install any. One of the guys (John?) installed a new gasket and bolts for me (after backing the car down the dyno ramps a bit for access). It's still a little early but my immediate impressions are that the car makes a MUCH smoother transition from no boost to boost. The Perrin 3-port is also crazy-loud. You never hear the stock boost-control solenoid but this one makes a constant clicking sound...was a bit alarming until I found the source of the sound. http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._3598652_n.jpg http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._3719319_n.jpg http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5682770_n.jpg http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._2428208_n.jpg |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Awesome! Do you have a before/after overlay? That is a *very* healthy hike in power/torque! Have fun with it! :D
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
No, we didn't do a pull before the new parts were installed. The initial pull after installing larger injectors and 3-port was nasty...under 200hp. Took a couple pulls to dial in the fuel.
|
Re: Evo X upgrades
The stock BCS on Subarus do the same thing, making that clicking noise all the time.
Nice numbers! |
Re: Evo X upgrades
Where did you mount then new BCS? Sometimes the 3-ports can make noise like that when mounted directly to the frame. Get a rubber or silicone gromet (or make one) and put that inbetween the BCS and the frame, should quiet it down quite a bit.

I bought a turbo blanket and am going to trim back the stock heat shield to try to cure the vibration against the downpipe. I'll take a peek at it while I'm working back there. I'm thinking about having DB do the install of my suspension upgrades in early Nov (when I get back from vacation). Nice looking shop and a good group of guys there. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
good numbers. shane all ways goes way beond to help everyone out

What was your boost at for the 357 run?

Shane went for 25psi as flat as he could across the midrange and then the stock turbo loses its breath up top. |

The 3-port install looks very professional, as you'd expect. Shane put it right where the stock solenoid was, reusing the bracket. The difference is that the stocker vented into the turbo inlet and Shane plugged that hole and the 3-port is now venting to atmosphere. I've decided that I like the noise...just another touch of mean. I had some teenagers at the gas station rubbernecking today. Must admit, I like that now and then...makes the effort feel worthwhile. |

What I like the most is the smoothness when making a pull. The car surges if I try to cruise in the 2-3k rpm range but I should just stop being lazy and downshift...the stock tune did that once in a while as well but it's consistent now. |
Re: Evo X upgrades
The power difference between MAP's dyno and DB's dyno is probably around 12-16%. So to go from 281whp to 340whp/352whp is at least a 60hp gain just from a tune.
Money well spent. ;) Edit - 27lbs of boost at 3,100 RPM also has to be fun, probably around 2,800 RPM on the street! |

Re: Evo X upgrades
Shane threw in a set of DW1000's and re-tuned me on E85 (E70 pretending to be E85, anyway).
I had him not get too wild with the psi. The stock X turbo can spike into the 30's but what I've been told is that it impacts torque and not hp since the boost tapers badly beyond 5500. I just didn't see the point in abusing the stock clutch like that. I threw on a set of Icebears this afternoon for the winter fun. On 12/12 I'm installing the rear anti-swaybar and a TWM short-shift kit. After that is the KW V3 coilovers and a Whiteline roll center kit install. A BBK, gauges, RE30's/NT05's, and some carbon aero is planned for the Spring. I intend to have this car complete by the next Mitsu cookout! http://mlomker.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8...62c36cb970c-pi http://mlomker.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8...62c36c3970c-pi http://mlomker.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8...62c36d0970c-pi |
