BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
So I have this friend with a really nice clean evo9. He's got some basic mods and a few weeks back I helped him install a fuel pump, stainless steal o2 housing, ported exhaust manifold, and ported his turbine housing for him while we had it off the car. A evo9 with MBC, exhaust, and tune should make about 290whp @ DB Performance. With his mods, he should hit right around 315whp. Well, the day I dyno'd my car (432whp woot!) he was on the rollers before me, and when I showed up for my appointment I helped troubleshoot what might be the problem with is car. It was running fantastic, except it was way down on power, about 270whp. We did a ton of tests, and the only thing we could find wrong was the throttle body seals were leaking slightly. VERY SLIGHTLY. Well, he replaced the TB with a ported and rebuilt unit, and went back. 270whp, no change. So, they decided to do a leakdown test at a later date.
He's from Rochester, and this time, he was out of gas when he got close, so he filled up on BP 93. The previous two times, he was on quik trip premium (92 or 93, not sure). Here's the before/after results: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3/IMG_0275.jpg BP 93 FTW! I love the stuff, my car made 388whp with it alone. I don't want to know what it would do on this other crap :( Here's the full info/modlist/story: http://www.evomn.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4247 |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
That's interesting. I've been using kwik trip 92 octane with no problems thus far. Maybe I should start filling up with bp 93.

Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
SWEET!
I know BP is the shit as far as gas goes, I used to take my DSM the extra 20 miles if need be to fill up there. However, I had filled up at Holiday before my tune... I wonder what the difference would of been between the two? |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
was the car knocking on the quick trip fuel? or was it just down on power? How mutch boost?
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
Good question carltalon... I'm assuming he was able to run MORE boost without knock with the BP than the Kwik Trip gas and that's why the power was higher right?
This wasn't the same boost level and just different gas was it? |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
BP is quite the good one. I "feel" that the BP does bring more power, but to little to notice. But comparing the BP with Holiday Gas Stations, i feel the difference with BP.

Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
Oh, that makes sense.
More timing > more boost. |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
thats pretty crazy. I only run the bp 93 but thats because the shop I work at is a bp
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
It was the same exact boost and same exact A/Fs. On the Kwiktrip gas the car was too prone to knock and we had to run lower than normal timing. His first pull on the BP 93 with no changes to the tune netted around 10awhp more. Then I was able to get a decent amount more ignition timing into the tune with the BP 93. The BP 93 he had was even noticably better than the BP 91/92 that we were always happy with.
The Evos run much less timing and are much more sensitive to timing than DSMs, so even being able to safely run 1 degree more can me a decent power gain with the stock turbo. 90% of the HP gains on an E85 stock turbo Evo are from more ignition timing, you might be running the same or 1 psi more of boost at 7000RPMs on E85 vs pump gas, because the turbo is just maxed to begin with and won't make much more boost in the upper RPMs. |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
Doesn't surprise me at all about my car now.
The guy who bought my car changed out the injectors to bigger ones and street tuned the car using DSMlink and WINTER e85. He said he made another 100whp when he dynoed it, compared to when I had it dyno tuned with DSMlink and Holiday 92. The most amazing part is it was only around 4 lbs more of boost, but I'm assuming a lot more timing... Edit - BTW I understand that it is a little different comparison, e85 to pump... but honestly 100 more whp??? That is like going from pump to C16 and e85 is only like 105 octane. So I think that says something about the quality of Holidays pump gas, shit. |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
If/when I switch to e85 in the quest, I am honestly expecting 100 more whp, and if it doesn't happen, I'll be sad, in which case, I'll sell the engine or maybe the whole car, haha. j/k.

Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
E85 is not crazy octane, but it is actually comparable to C16 when it comes to what you can get away with tuning wise on most forced induction cars. It's definately better than your run of the mill 110 octane race gases.
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
I'm assuming that is because of its crazy cooling properties Shane? I've heard of people not running Intercoolers once they switched to E85.
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
correct me if I'm wrong but the cooling properties help but I think most of it is the large octane jump from pump to e85 that make the biggest jump in hp cause octane rating is the fuels ability to resist detonating

Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
I <3 BP Ultimate!
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
must be the INVIGORATE! lol. jk.
It's suprising to see how much the BP93 differs from other Gas stations with 93 octane. The only BP i know that serves the 93 is off Robert Street in West St.Paul. |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
There's two right by my house and I only used bp ultimate in my dsm.
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
Most metro area BP's now serve the 93 octane.

Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
Probably, it seems to help turbo cars way more than it should. Both ethanol and methanol have very high latent heat of vaporisations compared to normal petrol fuels. Straight methanol doesn't have a crazy octane rating either, like 110-115 octane, while C16 is 116-117 octane. But you wouldn't see a C16 car running 60-80psi of boost with no intercooler, while you do with methanol cars.

Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
I had my own experience switching from BP to Holiday gas today. I was running my Colt at about 20psi on BP gas with about 6-7 counts of knock. Got 92 at Holiday and turned the boost down to 18psi. Knock still doubled.

I work at BP service writing and full service bitch, but yea, our gas is the shit. All sorts of people with nice cars come here because of the 93 octane hotness.
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
I don't seem to notice a difference from station to station, but I'll try and stick to the BP's as much as possible now. Good thing there's one right by my house.
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
I must be missing something... So he dynoed 270 originally, swapped TBs and came back another day, 270 again.
Came back a different time only switching to BP gas and now 318??? Guess I am a little leary as they were different days, temps, etc. Could have been a bad batch of gas or something else... I guess a better test would be slap the car on the dyno on BP, tune, drain all fuel, switch to holiday, and tune again. Still hard to rule out temp of the intake charge and the possibility of getting bad gas... |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
I have had numerous similar experiences, I always use BP 93 in my GTP since I run a really small pulley on the super charger.
One day I was almost out of gas when I left work so I got a bit of gas at a Kwik Trip on my way home. I got on the hwy and gave it 3/4 throttle, it felt way down on power for some reason, I hooked my scan tool up to it and it was knocking bad around 10lbs of boost and 1/2 throttle. Good thing I only put $5 in it; subsequently I went and filled it up with BP93, got on the same hwy going back towards home and floored it with my scan tool on, 18lbs of boost and no knock. Doesn't get anymore real world than that. BP gas is very good, the only people that are going to be able to tell the difference is high compression cars, or boosted cars that are slightly to highly modified. I have filled up my Tahoe all over and can't tell the different from place to place, but my GTP that makes a measly 350whp chokes and pukes on SA, Holiday, and Kwik Trip gas. Don't know why though, you would think the gas would be farely close, I mean what the heck doesn't 92 octane mean 92 octane? Weird. |

Yes, the test could be better, but it wasn't a test, it's what happened while one guy's evo was down on power and Shane and others tried to help him figure out what the problem was. Just sharing real-world results, that's all. |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
You should throw in another player: Shell V-Power!

Now I'm not recommending this, it was just an experiment with my POS Colt. I have no tuning equipment but I'm assuming it runs a bit rich with the factory unhacked 1G MAS. |

I'm full on converting to E85 as soon as I get off my lazy ass and put a small 16G on the car. It still has the 11b, and with decent gasoline it has no problems at all maxing out the power potential of the miniturbo.
|
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
Nice, that's like a stock conquest. Just add a 1G mass and unplug the waste gate and done.

I had an Evo 8 customer running Shell V-Power that was too prone to knock. He switched to BP 91 or 92(might have been back when the BPs only had 91) and we were able to pick up another 15awhp at the same boost level. Which is a decent amount on a 260awhp car.

Put it in your car and let me know how it goes for ya. I've tried it and the car ran noticeably worse, and many others have experienced the same issue. |
Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
hrm, this is rather interesting. I'll have to give BP 93 a try. I'll also have to talk with my BIL, he's in the 're-fueling gas station' business. IIRC, the majority of gas stations all get their fill from the same distributors. I believe there are only 2 or 3 here in MN.

Re: BP 93 vs Quik Trip Premium: Real world, dyno proven results!
I put some of this magic sauce in my car tonight, and it felt pretty good. I can't tell if it's because I wasn't wearing any shoes, or if it was raining, but it felt faster.
