Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
If so, then you can afford to sponsor a child in need. Think about it, around $20 a month can give a child in need food, water, shelter, clothing, and an education... things most of us take for granted everyday. You have the power to change someones life, I hope you decide to to make that change.
Honestly, it doesn't even have to cut into your weekends. If you can eat out one less time, buy one less new hat, buy one less new pair of jeans, or golf one fewer round a month and so on... |

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
Wow...what to do with this thread... I've never seen a thread quite like this on 'Style and frankly don't think you have a very good chance at getting members here to contribute, especially since you're a n00b and most people don't know you yet.
Are you actively involved with this organization? Who is it? How to people contribute? How can we be assured most the money is actually going to help rather than just lining some guys pocket? |

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I really like the thread idea. If you don't want to donate or sponsor then just hit the back button and don't bother. No need to flame somebody for steppin outa their bubble a little bit.
I sponsor a little guy in Nicaragua through a ministry called Compassion. I donate $32 whopping dollars a month. I set it up automatically too, so I don't have to bother writing checks or remembering to pay all the time lol. It's pretty sweet really. My little guy (Jose, 11yrs old) sends me letters every month or so and always includes a little picture or somethin he colored. I can obviously write back and over time, get to know him more and encourage him. If you are at all interested please check out these links. If not, then don't. :) One time donation: https://www.compassion.com/contribution/defaulta.htm Full time sponsorship: http://www.compassion.com/sponsor_a_child/default.htm You won't regret it :) ...and if you do, or just cant afford it anymore, you can always cancel your sponsorship. |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
this is all good and fine, but why the hell do they always want you do the monthly 20.00 or so for a kid or family that is out side the US. when we have just as many kids and familys here that could use the help. I am not saying not to help out people but we need to help out our own back yard first

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I sponsor a young man in Thailand. It's $100-150/yr to put them through school.
The point? Bargain shop if you're going to sponsor a child. lol. Seriously, I'm not religious and I wouldn't give my money to group like Compassion. I'm sure they do fine work but they probably pay their foreign missionaries enough to live comfortably and there are locally-run charities that don't do that. |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I agree with the "lets fix our own shit" idea. Why do I care about a starving broke kid in Kenya when there are starving broke kids in Minneapolis. Or how about instead of spending that $20 a month on a kid in thailand you spend that $20 bucks at a local business and help stimulate the economy. And by local business I of course mean Sneaky Pete's and Bootleggers.
Here's to stimulating the economy!:5shotss::theBar: |

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I had a bad feeling this thread would generate a lot of bad post, and that isn't what it was intended for.
Kracka, I didn't put any specific organizations up because anyone who really is interested in giving would want to pick their own organization they felt comfortable with and had researched. |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I like the idea, but I've got my own kids to sponsor. Unlike a previous poster I would only give my sponsorship through a Christian organization, because I know several missionaries, and they don't live much better than the people they work with and frankly they don't want to, being a missionary is all about service, kinda like a lot of pastors. Their reward is in heaven, not in their bank account.
Anyways, good idea. Helping someone else ends up helping yourself more. |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
Febo how does spending $20 bucks at Sneaky Pete's and Bootleggers gonna help starving people here :-P I agree with fixing stuff here. Good luck!
|
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I also like fixing stuff here, that is why you can donate your time and or money. Most people can't donate enough money to really change a kids life in America. $20 a month can do SO much in other countries.
A couple bucks can give a kid clean drinking water for a month, a buck in America can get a kid a bottled water. |

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
This is a little off topic, but it is about giving...
Yesterday, I was hitting some practice golf balls in my courtyard at my apartment. There were these two little kids watching me who couldn't speak much English, mainly just Spanish. I asked them if they would like there own golf club to have and play with and they responded very enthusiastic. So I went to my car, grabbed two sand wedges that I hadn't used in a couple years and really had no use for and gave them both a club and a practice ball. They played with the clubs until it rained out yesterday. I just looked out my window and they are both in the courtyard just swinging away at their practice balls. To me, that is worth much more than any golf shop could of paid me for the clubs. Trust me, I could of REALLY REALLY used that money too. |

+1 for Goat Blower.
I like donating with compassion because they do a great job of keeping you updated about what's going on in the ministry. For any of you ppl that think donating to US organizations is better, I won't discourage your from doing so ;) It all helps. |

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
Man's got a point, actually. That money goes to local businesses, gets distributed between the employees, who also spend money at local businesses, and the distributors that business deals with. Those distributors spend money on the goods they distribute, and it just kind of spiderwebs from there to keep the gears turning.
Where does the money go if you send it to someone in another country? Oh yeah, that country. We have enough economic issues as it is without raising the value of everyone else's currency, be it the Euro or fucking bottle caps. |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
This thread has nothing to do with boosting our economy cmspaz.
BTW you need to take a deep breath and calm down kid. |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I work third shift and I gave up both Friday & Saturday.

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I've always wanted to do a monthly sponsorship in the future, once my income gets a little bit more stable.
Me and my ex did a one time sponsorship dealy a few years ago, and the letter we got from tHe kid with pictures and stuff really makes you feel like that was the best $ you could have spent. Just my .02 :) |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I'm all for helping people out and lending a hand when needed, but in this case I'm a selfish son of a bitch.

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I've thought about doing something like this, just haven't yet. To me, it's kind of easy to see who here has not been outside the US, and who has. Yes we have hungry kids in Minneapolis. That doesn't come close to comparing to the hungry kids in 3rd world countries. That's a whole different kind of hungry over there. Our homeless here have it nicer than some of the people with "homes" in other countries. And I don't mean to take away from those in need here. I just mean to say that there are people all over the globe, with varying needs for help, and it's great when someone, does something to help another, in any neck of the woods whether it be here, or Asia/Africa/etc.
It's everyones own personal decision on if they want to donate to someone overseas, someone within the country, etc. The point isn't to pick apart someones good deed, but to simply understand that it's a good deed in the end. Donating time, money, SOMETHING, to help another in need, is a beautiful example of a person reaching out to help someone else less fortunate than yourself. That person who is actually DOING (not the person(s) just sitting back and talking about it on the internet), gets to chose where he wants to place his good deed. I'm all for donating. It makes this world a better place overall, and it makes you feel better as a person. There's a million ways to donate money, time, toys, old clothes, adoption (people and/or animals) etc. I say good on anyone who does it, and shame on anyone who feels the need to negitively judge someone else on how they chose to do there part in helping another. Me personally, the only real donating I do is every year I give two toys to the Toys for Tots Marine Corps foundation. It feels good to give. I could do more, and probably should do more, but at least I'm doing something, just like I know there are many others on here that do as well. Someday I may consider doing something like these child adoption programs. |
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
Toys for Tots counts? Oh well then Im good, along with my $20+ given to the salvation army, and my slefless contribution to the local economy. Like McDonalds for instnace, as Im about to go pay some kids hourly wage for this hour.

Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
I'll donate $20 a month towards rubbers for people in these countries. :P
|
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
Or at least more education about the pull out and rhythm methods.
|
Re: Can you give up going out ONE Friday OR Saturday a MONTH?
Yea I donate clothes, and stuff like that when I have a chance, but as far as sponsoring a child. Who knows where that money is going, to be honest.
In my eyes, Im paying taxes, which goes to help some hoboish people afford things like alchohol, spinner rims, and cable TV. Not my problem they dont use it to buy things like food or education. Yea Im stubborn on this topic. :) |
