Im done with ACT products

I went to the track with the expectations of 11s. I have the power and I have good 60 foot times. I just have a lockout in every gear with shifting above 5500 rpm's. I bought the Act hdss clutch kit a little over a year ago and it doesnt slip at all, it just locks out all the fucking time. I could only manage a 12.3 with a 60ft of 1.69. I know act clutches are ok for dsm's but I just cant believe how terrable this clutch is for the evo. Im thinking of the competition clutch but how much power can these really hold up to, I need something that will hold up for over 400hp and 400tq.

what year is your car?

I'm not making as much power as you are, but I have the competition stage 4 clutch in my DSM and I love it. Much better than my old ACT 2600/street disc.

Re: Im done with ACT products

go with a spec stage 3+ i love mine, never slips at all and have never had any issues with it

He has an 03Evo 8. I think he needs a twin disk...

I don't get it....do you have the same problem on the street? How did you not konw about this problem before hitting the drag strip.....does no one practice before they go? ;)

Not really. I'm 99% sure Jim has the SAME clutch. He's making more power, he made 20+ runs down the drag strip this weekend and from what I hear, he had better than good results with it. TwinDiscs are NOT the end-all solution that people make them out to be, especially on a DD street car.

Re: Im done with ACT products

Jim has a sprung 6-puck, I'm pretty sure Mike has the street disc. Shawn was also getting lock-out on nearly every pass yesterday and he never has gotten it on the street. The ACT street discs just do not allow high RPM fast shifting.

No sir, this requires breaking the laws. Unless the car is stock, can't be on it for long before exceeding the speed limit.

Re: Im done with ACT products

It would be nearly impossible to simulate dragstrip conditions on the street. A hard launch + rowing through 4-5 gears + skyrocketing adrenaline.

Re: Im done with ACT products

Yea, you can't run the street disc on the Evo's. That's been a known issue for many years.

Ahhh, I see! F U ACT and your full-face discs!

I've never had a problem shifting with the street disks on my DSMs or Galant

Evo's are setup differently.

I'm certain my car has an ACT clutch in it and I have never been locked out of gear.

Funny that at the same time this thread is going on there is a huge one on EvoM about the same thing.

Just don't replace it with a Comp Clutch, unless they fixed their failure problems.

We'll see shortly...
Its really quite frustrating b/c it seems like all clutches for the Evo, single and twin, are failing at a very high rate compared to most cars.

Pull style sucks.

Yup :( Any idea what Mitsu's reasoning would be?

Because it is Mitsu?

Pull style *can* have some advantages with tighter packaging I am pretty sure, but they really don't seem to work nearly as well...

Re: Im done with ACT products

I never really tried shifting as hard as I did at the track. My best run was my first run, after that I would get locked out even at 5500rpm's. Im going to try a 6 puck first and then if that doesnt work out for me, than I will go with the twin.

Re: Im done with ACT products

ACT HDG6 for the evo or nothing else when it comes to ACT. Their street discs lock out at high RPMs. ACT street discs are as shitty as their 6puck sprung is awesome when it somes to the evo.

I have 14k on my ACT HDG6 and I was shifting lightning fast at 8200rpms on 11 drag passes with zero lock out this weekend. At least 30 some odd launches so far. I hot lapped dragged three runs back to back all in about 5 minutes and the clutch never slipped or complained. 11.1@126 was best time and that was NLTS shiffting with a 1.658 60'.

I had a couple people at BIR try to tell me my clutch sucks and lockouts, funny stuff.

Re: Im done with ACT products

I saw you jim and you were not having any problems. You probably saw me on the track sucking it up. I could not get it into any gear over 5500 once, every shift locked out. I may just pick up a act 6 puck clutch disc and try that out.

I would have said Hi but by the time I noticed another silver evo it was late in the day and couldn't find where you were at in the pits. Yeah it looked like you were having shifting issues, how frustrating. :(

Re: Im done with ACT products

You can spend some time playing with the adjustment rod, cruise switch/stopper and relieving pressure in the system until it works better. I have had some luck doing that to get rid of lockout with the ACT street disc, but often the engagement point ends up being very high.

I would do anything to get rid of it at least a little bit. I want some 11's this year with whatever it takes.

Re: Im done with ACT products

Well, just get a 6 puck in there and you'll be fine. I made sure to not get a street disc because the ACT guy (ACTman on EvoM) told me the full face discs were known to lock out because they're heavier than the stock discs. Shep told me the same thing. Just get a 6 puck in there (sprung or unsprung) and you'll be fine. Also, my unsprung one lasted... 60k miles hahaha. It finally just got switched out this year.

Thats insane! Very impressive though. I assume it even had plenty of abuse and launches on it?
