What weight oil do you use?

And if you use something other than 10w-30 which is specified by the 1g dsm users manual, why did you switch?

Reason I ask, is my oil pressure is a little on the low side, which isn't too surprising for a high mileage dsm, and i've been thinking about switching to 10w-40 to boost it a bit until i get around to swapping out the oil pump. Is that a terrible idea?

Kracka 06-16-2009 01:53 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

10W-40 is fine to use and falls within Mitsu's spec for use during the warmer months. What is your oil pressure at during idle and hwy cruise?

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I use 15W-40. Reason is because I just see a lot of the other guys at similar power levels using thicker weights. And if it's working for them, then hopefully it works for me.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I put 10w-30 synthetic in my quest because I got it for free at the dyno day, and it's working fine. But next oil change I'm going back to 20w-50 regular oil for the win.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I have always used 10-30.

What would be the benefit of running heavier oil? Does not having balance shafts and not porting your relief valve make your oil pressure get pretty high with the heavier stuff too?

Swifty1638 06-16-2009 11:24 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I saw a big difference in 15w 40 vs. 10w 30. The newer stuff my oil psi was around 80 at cruising/pulls, and around 50ish at idle, or just below. Old 10w30 it would be around 25 at idle, and 75ish max under load. I ran the oil feed off the filter housing, and no restrictor, and could have been the reason why my turbo detonated, and shifted the center shaft over.

When you start making some decent power you might want to goto some thicker oil to protect that munchgsx stage 1 motor you got.

Amsoil 20w50 with larger main bearing gap by using acl race bearings.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Amsoil 20w50 here as well.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I did use 5w30 valvoline conventional at one point, but did not like how my lifters reacted. So then I went to 10w30 valvoline and it got better. Switched to valvoline full synthetic 10w30 and I leaked everywhere. lol

I plan to run full synthetic 10w30 once I get the car put back together.

I run royal purple 10w-30 right now, but will be switching to Rotalla 10w-30 this weekend.

Oh I forgot to mention, I already run Rotella in my DD, I will be switching to rotella in the DSM this weekend.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Why Rotella?

Kracka 06-17-2009 03:09 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Its a good, proven, heavy-duty conventional oil.

4g63tcrazy 06-17-2009 05:54 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Is it cheap? Or is it expensive like Royoal Purple and AMSOIL? And where do they sell it?

Kracka 06-17-2009 06:54 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Its priced like every other conventional, I think a gallon (4 quarts) is under $10 at Walmart.

Yeah it's price is extremely reasonable. Right on par with other name brand jugs of conventional oil.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

wow, crazy. For once something that people speak positively about that isn't stupidly expensive.

4g63tcrazy 06-17-2009 11:41 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

So I should stop running Royal Purple and run this stuff?

Stop running RP and run anything else. There are lots of great conventional and synthetic choices available.

http://mitsustyle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195

My favorite conventionals:
Chevron Supreme
Shell Rotella

My favorite synthetics:
Mobil 1
Castrol Syntec

They're all reasonably priced and easy to find while providing great engine protection and oil life.

4g63tcrazy 06-17-2009 11:54 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I'm talkin about my talon. Are you saying I should run non-synthetic? And this oil is that good? Or are you talking about in any other regular car? I'm a little confused haha.

Kracka 06-18-2009 12:06 AM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I'm talking about any car. There is no reason to run synthetic oil in your DSM. The only reason I run Mobil 1 in my Evo is because its the factory fill. I ran Chevron Supreme in my S2000, Laser, and currently in Janelle's WRX. In some of my other DSM's I ran Rotella and Supertech (Walmart's brand).

There are plenty of good oils available so pick one and stick with it. Read that oil thread I linked to, lots of good info has been posted.

4g63tcrazy 06-18-2009 12:16 AM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I'll read the thread but it just wouldnt feel right putting regular oil in my dsm.. I would feel guilty haha. I had to put Q horsepower in it once cause no stores were open with royal purple and I babied the car til the next oil change.

Thats just plain crazy and ridiculous.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I run Rotella 10w40 in my DSM and it works great for me. I usually throw in a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer just for shits, and because with the external cooler, it takes 5 quarts.

Shane@DBPerformance 06-18-2009 11:17 AM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I run whatever... I would feel more safe running some cheap store brand conventional oil from Holiday in any car making decent power over the water they sell as Mobile 1 nowdays.

Kracka 06-18-2009 11:20 AM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Mobil 1 is actually testing very well in extended drain analysis. I posted Zac's analysis after 8k miles in the oil thread. Their viscosity ratings are definitely on the thin side though. If Mitsu didn't specifically recommend Mobil 1 10W-30 for the Evo I'd be temped to use 5W-40 instead.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Sweet, using some valvoline 10w-40 really helped my car run better. As scary as it is... my car no longer is registering knock using this weight oil. It really helped quiet down the engine.

Halon 06-19-2009 06:37 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Sounds like maybe you had some lifter tick that the thicker oil is helping keep quiet. Cool.

I'm switching to rotella, sick of paying up the ass for mobile 1

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Mobil One really isn't what it used to be.

Anyone with a DSM making over 350whp should probably be running 10w40 or higher, or at least that is my opinion.

True, ever since they sued Castrol (and lost) a few years ago it hasn't been a REAL 100% synthetic oil even though legally they are allowed to call it 100% synthetic.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Lame, after running the thicker oil for about 800 miles, my car is now registering knock again :( wtf.

It's possible you have a spun bearing.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

I run M1 10w-40 in my 6g76. The Mitsu book says 5w-30 but the heavier oil hushes the lifters nicely.

Very unlikely (doesn't show any signs of it) but i'm clueless. I think I just have a loud engine.

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Has anyone used Valvoline VR1 20W50 and how do you like it? I'm thinking of running that for the summer then regular conventional in the winter.

Synthetic oil is just too expensive for me right now and is un-needed.

SnoEclipse 06-29-2009 01:07 PM

Re: What weight oil do you use?

Synth only costs more money if you insist on changing it every 3k miles.

If you take it to 10k miles with a filter change at 3500 and 7k miles, your price per mile goes way down.

But this would start the whole oil change interval argument again.
