Rally Cross

So I have briefly talked about this with a couple people from the board and a couple friends, and wanted to see if anyone else does or is interested in doing a little rally cross. It's seems like some good ol fashion fun in some dirt, where are dsm's should be..haha. So yea chime in about the subject, I'm planning on running in the next event.

Re: Rally Cross

I'm planning on photographing the next event (as per usual), unless someone is willing to let me share their car.

Re: Rally Cross

My 1g is ready and tested, did a little back dirt road driving, and it's running great. Need to fix my passenger window motor (by fix I mean swap in a new one) so I can keep the inside of my car clean..haha. Have a set a blizzaks that grip the dirt nice too.

Re: Rally Cross

Nice dude... you're better off then I was at my first event, I just ran all seasons. I'll be there, so your maroon 1g won't be alone :)

Re: Rally Cross

Haha yes! Looks like us maroon 1g guys are the only ones not afraid to get a little dirty.

Re: Rally Cross

I want to do it, mostly because I'm confident that I'm a better driver than the majority of the Subaru tards out there, but driving off road is not friendly to a lowered car.

Re: Rally Cross

I'd say an event where there surface is relatively smooth shouldn't be too bad. People were talking about the Corcoran site at the last event, and I would feel comfortable running my car there, it's nothing but pea gravel.

The Canon Falls site isn't too hard on cars, though.

I'd almost have to agree with you... I beat a surprising number of people (subarus), and i've only ever done 1 driving event before that; the autocross novice clinic. I don't claim to be a driving prodigy or anything. You'd probably do really well.

Well, if anyone wants to share their car with me for a rallycross event I have my stock Evo wheels with snow tires on them. :)

You have coilovers, dont you? Go for a 2" lift!

I've thought about that, but it's a lot of work just to school some wanna-be rally drivers for an afternoon.

That doesn't seem like that much work... There were also some lowered WRX's out there.

Re: Rally Cross

You'd have to mark exactly where they were at, plus it would take probably about an hour to do all four, twice. Not something I'd do for fun, that's for sure, just getting them set once installed was enough for me.

Re: Rally Cross

I need a clutch :( bleh I'm pissed. Thought I felt it slip the other day, and now it's for sure slipping under full boost.

why do you have to mark it? Is it important you get it back to the exact same place? I've had cars with coilovers, it wasn't usually a big deal to adjust them. Just easier if you jack up each corner as you're doing it.

Cash is what's gonna slow me down, Dane might be able to get me an exedy aftermarket clutch that I can pay off...I'm bummed though, just got it running good.

I assume alignment would be off if you put them back to a different place. I guess it doesn't have to go back to the *exact* same place, but I'd want it pretty darn close.

Matt D. 06-02-2009 11:52 AM

Re: Rally Cross

Yeah, alignment will be off if you adjust it at all. Driving in dirt won't affect much with bad alignment, but I wouldn't want to drive on the road very far with bad alignment.

Obviously the people at the top are going to have skill, I think Matt D was probably more referring to your average subaru driver :)

Even Rally drivers can get beat out. ABV (mark) beat out Mark Uteck in his old Prepped Scoobie with my 1G, basic mods and rally tires. Club/Pro Rally is one thing, Rally Cross is another, if you know you're car well enough, you're gold. I think Dizzle would do just fine. I'm looking forward to the day of being able to get back out on the courses again, maybe with another 1G, maybe with a little something else.

Haha, then I am nowhere near going to win. I couldnt care less though, I am going in with no course racing experience, except for the occasional dirt road racing (which doesnt count anyways)...so yea, who cares if you win or lose, its just about getting dirty...lol :seeya:

If you had a manual car I'd take up your offer for sure, just not interested in driving an automatic car.

let me just say this at the last race the fastest time of the day was in a automatic 91 turbo t leg its not always the car but it is always the driver...but if your not up for challenges thats fine..I would hate for you to loose in a auto wagon...

No shit! I guess the rallyx smack talk threads on MNSubaru pay off!

But seriously Matt D, she does have a point. I've seen your driving first hand, and I know you're good, definitely one of the best drivers I've ever ridden with. But I seriously think that if you can hold yourself so far above a group of drivers that you've never seen or met yet have already stereotyped, on a surface that you've never competitively run your a car on (IIRC), that you will be quite unpleasantly dismounted from your high horse at one of these events.

I'm not trying to tear you down here, I'm just telling it like I see it. Regardless, you should definitely come out, I'm sure everyone would like some more serious competition, especially of the ill-represented Mitsu variety.

nah its just my hatred for all people named matt, they are all way to full of themselves..oh look I can generalize and categorize too! lol...jk...yes it would be nice to have some more serious competition! so my offer still stands this next event is the last time to be able to co drive my car cause come jul i will have a another co driver for the rest of the season who also offered me to co drive in his sti for autocross.

to be fair, i refuse to rallyx the SlowTI this year. the Gravity Park Twin Performance stage rally was enough like a rallyx to convince me that the car's powerband and gearing match up so poorly for low speed stuff it just isn't fun (n/a ej257 using turbo cams and manifold ftl). i'll be back next year at rallyx's though with our extremely overbuilt open class engine lol

This seriously makes me want to ditch the coilovers and put better springs on my stock struts just so I can do some rallycross.

10"? Not enough. Also, ditch the sway bars, they just add weight.
