Project: XP Stealth
Well, since I started putting parts on my 93TT today, I figured I'd start my thread. I have the front suspention and brakes swapped over. I have the left rear Ksports swapped as well, need to do the upper control arm and brake as well. Other than that, I haven't done a ton to it. It's filled with parts.
A little backround on the car itself. I bought it back in 2006. This was my second 3S, first one that ran. I drove it for a short while, until the water pump locked up. Nothing bad happened to the engine besides some minor over heating. But after seeing the poor state of affairs with the T-belt I pulled the engine for further inspection. Pulling the main girdle off the center two main bearings showed copper. A build with pistons and all sorts of stuff was started at this point. I collected a lot of parts, but very few ever made it on the car. I also did a lot of work to the car. Everything was pulled out, all sound deadening was removed, all wiring that didn't run the engine or lights was removed, pop up head lights were converted to manual pop up, and I'm sure a few things I've forgotten about. Then my 92TT came up cheap and I started focusing on the driver mod more and the budget and motivation for this car dwindled. Since the 92 TT is dead, and approaching gone, the 93 will be coming back to life. It's only just though, the 92 "stole" a lot of parts from the 93 when it ran into some major problems. So, that's a fair amount of the story of why I'm building my race car. Goals for the car: Initially under 3000lbs, eventually under 3000 lbs with driver. Power: Mid to upper 400's. Into the 5's if I go for E85. After that who knows. Make it turn better. For anyone wondering why it's "Project XP Stealth", here's why. XP is an autocross class for cars. It stands for X Prepared, and is the fastest Prepared class there is. It has a TON of allowances for modifications in the rules, which also means to be competitive, you NEED to take advantage of every allowance in the rules, because someone else will, and beat you because of it. Due to some of the mods already done without consideration for the rules, this is the class that my car will fit into. I could attempt to undo the mods, but there are potential problems with that. And I was half considering running this car in this class anyways, so why not? I only have to beat Miata's and BWM's any ways, should be no problem for an oversized Mitsu right? :spin: :drive1: |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
This is gonna be sweet! Let me know if you need a hand anytime Ryan.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Good luck man! I hope this turns out the way you envision it.
Are you going to need a tow rig now too or you still going to be a trooper and drive it to events? |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Yay! Can't wait to see progress pics!
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
At least for the foreseeable future it will be driven to events. Working power windows, + working lights/turn signals = street legal enough to take my chances every once in a while.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
^ I agree! This project sounds pretty fun, good luck!
What color is it? |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Sweet project! I was excited to maybe see a bimmer in your garage, but this will have to do. :)

Sounds like a pretty sweet project!

Re: Project: XP Stealth
I did very little with the 93 today, but the 92TT is 100% ready to be dragged off to never never land. I cleaned it out a little, mostly put scrap metal into the 92 and set aside a bit of aluminum to make a few $$. The front sub frame piece showed up, so I should be able to assemble the trans and drop the motor/trans in tomorrow.
Thanks for the interest guys, hopefully it won't take to long to get it up and running. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
This is going to be awesome. Your sister sounds like a pretty funny person, haha.
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Well, I dropped the engine & trans in today. I had to Heli-coil two holes on the front sub frame, and working a bit of over time slowed me down durring the week. I also did the mod to my power steering pump so it shouldn't cut out at high revs any more.
I put the trans together a while ago with some upgrades. I now have a torsen style front diff (stock is open diff) and an upgraded output shaft. My "new" trans also has a good VCU in the center diff. The old one had a bad one. I did a new input spool on the T-case as well. With the t-case brace, at my power level the drive train should be able to handle anything I can throw at it. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Ok, I need to get cracking on this thing. I want to be driving it for the intermediate school on the 14th.
I have all the the drive train installed, still need to fill the trans. After that it's just hooking up the engine stuff and getting it aligned. I also need to have the IC fixed, which would be just about the only hold up I think. I have some new pipes on order, hopefully they get here in a timely fashion and I can get things all wrapped up. At this point my focus has shifted from getting all my mods and parts done and installed, to getting it driving. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Should be sweet!
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
I forgot about a few parts that need to be done custom, but I don't think I will have any problem getting them done. I did start it for a few seconds today, just to make sure everything works.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Pics?

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Rule of thumb for the project: If it doesn't make it go, stop or run it's not there. It does have working exterior lights, and windshield wipers, they are need to be street legal.

WOW you weren't kidding, that thing is totally gutted! Looks good man, definitely a comfy daily driver for ya ;)
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Haha dang! This wont be daily driven very often will it? Strictly track car?
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
No, not much of a DD, especially with the current exhaust set up of 3" pipe ending at about the rear axle line.
I do plan on putting the door panels back on for now. Until I get better (and lighter) seats and harness, I don't want anybody getting cut up trying to hold on/stay in place. More of a safety thing than anything else. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Passenger seat what? ;)
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Well :( It's 3060lbs and still missing the radiator and IC (pipes are in the car though). And it's only got about 4 gallons of gas in it. I'm guessing about 3130 will be the "final" current weight, with fuel, coolant, ic and door panels. Just makes me even more impressed with those select few that put the time and $ into getting these things under the 3000lb mark. I guess I'll have to see how it does. But I don't have the light rims on, I'll have to see what the difference in weight of the rim/tire combo is, the rims are ~10lbs lighter (each), but I'm not sure about the tires, 30mm wider.
On the plus side, light weight seats, and other more expensive parts are yet to be installed. Edit: the race wheels will be -40lbs total. I think it's time to ditch the crash bars maybe... -21lbs for the front. -36lbs rear. -3lbs for one rear tow hook. -~22lbs for the glass roof that I can take off at events... So close. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Time to start cutting.
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
Thats pretty light for a 3s ryan. You've still got room with your listed items, plus possibly flaring sheet metal, and swapping out glass for lighter bits.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Fuk dude sounds like you are about ready to hit the streets in this thing. I say fuk the weight for now, it's light enough. Get it running and driving, start to dial in the suspension and get the thing shaken down. Then come back and finish the weight reduction stuff, you've come a long way so far!
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
I just drove it up to the neighbor's and back. Needs an alignment bad, the steering wheel is 1/4 turn right to go straight.
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
I did a half-assed aligment (eye balled it) and have taken it for a few short spins. With the open exhaust it needs a bit more fuel in boost. I tossed in 10% accross the board, it still goes a bit lean. I added some more but haven't tried it yet.
I need to do a better alignment or something though. It seemed to get a bit squirrelly a couple times that I got on it. Maybe it's just the front diff + the roads or something but it was enough to surprise me the second time. I put the rest of the exhaust on as well, made it much quieter, inside at least. Straight 3" ending next to the rear diff. |
Re: Project: XP Stealth
So bring up one of your rims and we can make the toe adjuster things to attach to your rims, and almost 1000lbs less will have A LOT of effect on how fast the car is, and load so the tune will be a little off. A little less tree dodging and more aligning/tuning. Its nice to see the IC and radiator holding up nice.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
So, after a bunch of little finishing touches (making sure everything it bolted down, zip tied and in general order) and some cleaning, I'm ready to put it through it's paces tomorrow. I am attending the intermediate school MAC is putting on, so not a competition event, but it should be a good test and shake down.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
So, it was an easy fix. Apparently my AEM really wanted to be in an EVO. So after a reminder (firmware and cal upload) it figured out that it's in something with a few more cylinders. :D
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
So it just randomly switched two cylinders off? Seems kinda weird to me.
|
Re: Project: XP Stealth
AEM's will sometimes do weird things when you have a latop hooked up to them. It is a little weird to switch off two cylinders, normally it will just die and not start untill you just cycle the power to the ECU.

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Here you thought it was a PTU ;).

Re: Project: XP Stealth
Sounds awesome, great to see it running man!
