clicking poping and binding noise

so its about time i posted this. after i completed my 4 bolt swap. driving around i get a clicking and poping noise. sometimes i get a rubbing noise.

this happens while driving. ive checked under the car and i see nothing rubbing or any contact of moving parts.

this only happens while moving, so i tried jacking up the car and leaving it in gear to try and better pinpoint the problem but there was no noise when i tried this.

so it only happens when the cars suspension and loaded ive got no clue what this would be

ive had halon kind of check this out as well and i just cant figure it out.

when i did the 4 bolt swap is was an entire suspension swap, as well as some agx's in the back

any help would be nice as im compleatly stumped

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

Is it possible thats the rack in pinion are bad? or thats your rear shocks are bad?

viridionplague 05-22-2009 02:24 AM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

rack and pinion should be fine, this only started happening after doing the rear end, thats all i touched.

i guess it wouldnt hurt to throw the stockers back up there and see if that helps at all though, thanks for the idea

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

well i tried the shocks, to no avail. only other thing i can think of is that for whatever reason its the calipers making the noise.

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

Axle CV joints? Thats a common clicking noise from the rears on DSMs.

viridionplague 05-22-2009 02:57 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

one of the front axles is a little loose, but the rears seem to be in good shape

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

When I was hanging out of your window, it sounded like the noise was for sure coming from up front, not the rear.

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

i just find it kind of odd this would happen after doing the 4 bolt swap in the rear. never touched the front, and it was fine before the swap.

you think a bad axle would make that kind of a noise?

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

What do all of your control arms look like? does the wheel wiggle L to R or up and down?

Kevin 1G Drummer 05-22-2009 07:12 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

A bad CV joint would definitely make that kind of noise. When you put in the new rear axles did you check to make sure they moved freely without any weird noises or excess play? That would be the first place I would look.

viridionplague 05-22-2009 07:14 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

wheels do not wiggle at all. the axles in the rear were installed already. they turned pretty freely, i installed the entire rear assembly. like the entire rear end all at once as thats how i bought it.

i tride grabing the axle and moving it around, just a very very small amount a movment on one side but nothing i would be worried about

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

The rear axles on these cars click all the time and they will usually last forever doing that and you usually won't be able to tell a good one from a bad one by looking at them or wiggling them. You just go buy new ones. If you run a welded center diff or welded VC, then those new ones will soon be clicking again.

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

so its probly not a big deal then?

viridionplague 06-01-2009 06:56 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

well i went and bought an axle, got that in.

im still getting this clicking and popping noise, every once in a while i get a loud thunk as well.

going strait is fine most the time but turning slightly causes alot of noise./

anyone else got any ideas?

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

My car is down for awhile. If you want to borrow either of my axles or intermediate shaft for a couple days and swap it in just to see if the issue goes away, feel free.

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

could give it a shot, i realy think its the back end though, just that the sound it traveling up the drive shaft or something

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

the way it sounds to me is the spider gears or the limited slip in the rear could be shot id pull the diff cover and have a look see.

Kevin 1G Drummer 06-01-2009 11:26 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

^^ +1. If it's fine going straight, but clunks and pops going around a corner I would be concerned about the diff. That is, unless the previous owner put a clutch type LSD in it.

viridionplague 06-01-2009 11:41 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

well the rear diff is welded, ill pop the cover here in the next day or two and ill take a look, ive never been in a rear diff but i guess ill find out

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

is your car an auto?

Halon 06-01-2009 11:49 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

No his car is not an auto.

viridionplague 06-01-2009 11:56 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

no its a 5 speed

Kevin 1G Drummer 06-02-2009 12:29 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

Hmm, maybe the welds broke loose. It would explain the noises.

viridionplague 06-04-2009 05:47 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

so i pulled the rear diff cover, seems that most of the welds are loose and some of them are compleatly broken off, i pulled some good chunks off the magnet.

so as i moved the wheels i was getting some clunking coming from the diff.

also the more binding and pingin noise is coming from the passenger side rear tire, where exactly is hard to tell with the tire still off but it for sure the source of that noise.

anyone wanna venture some ideas on what you would do in this situation?

Halon 06-04-2009 06:15 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

rebuild the rear diff. I'm not sure how, but I know Steve on here did.

viridionplague 06-04-2009 08:38 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

i dont think i like the idea of trying to rebuild it, since its welded already, ill probly just have it rewelded and figure out the other noise.

need to find somone with a welder now

unless i can find a good rear diff for cheap

Kevin 1G Drummer 06-05-2009 08:50 AM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

The other noise you were hearing could possibly be the wheel bearing. There isn't much else back there that could be making the noise.

viridionplague 06-05-2009 10:41 AM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

yea its really faint, i only heard it cause my head was right in between the diff and the wheel, and it was pretty quite at the time.

its a very quite and sounds like a small metal piece is being "picked" like a musical instrument, just dosent resonate.

Kevin 1G Drummer 06-05-2009 05:36 PM

Re: clicking poping and binding noise

Yup, sounds like the wheel bearing is starting to go.It probably makes more noise when there's a load on the wheel. It's kinda hard to test with a loud exhaust, but it should be able to be heard if the car is slowly rolling and someone is listening back by the wheel
