All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

I'm starting to plan for the Cookout. I'm probably going to have it on Sunday, August 23rd. The next big thing to figure out is to just do the Cookout. Or expand it like last year to include events on Saturday, like a dyno day/swap meet and cruise.

For me, doing the full weekend was a lot more work, and our numbers were actually down in 2008 compared to 2007. That was a real bummer. Gas prices were over $4 a gallon, and the economy wasn't too great. We did get a lot more out-of-towners, but the number of locals that actually came to the Cookout was way down.

So I'd like to hear some opinions on what direction to take this thing.

Thanks,
Curt

Summer is busy enough as it is, so I vote for just a weekend afternoon. In my opinion the day gets a bit too long as well by the time voting comes around at 4ish.

I agree, the day gets long so I always show up at like 11am.

Last year was my first, but I have to agree, by about 2pm I had planted myself on a camp chair under one of the 'Style tents.

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

It's great to include a dyno day. The cookout and dyno day all in one day would be a little much, so I vote 2 days unless someone has a good idea on how to make it one day without it being morning to night.

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

Im not voting yet becuase i would want to know what the schedule of events would look like. If its camping i might be down, hotels im not the craziest about. The day does get long at the cook out but if there is more planned it might be better. Once again never let the numbers get you down there are a lot of outside influences that can effect it non of which can be controlled you do an awesome job at putting on this show

I'm still baffled at the people who think the Cookout is too long. If you truly get bored at looking at Mitsus, why not show up an hour or two late. We won't run out of food and you'll still see all the cars and see who wins.

I've been to a lot of car shows in my days. Having one less than five hours is just not practical.

More thoughts?

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

I do show up usually around 11, I guess ill have to make it 1 or 2. :D 5 hours of standing there gets to be a bit long... I see im not alone in this. If things were going on, like at a dyno day, it may be more interesting... but really looking at so many mitsus only takes maybe an hour. :) Then eating and chatting maybe a couple more...

Making sure it isn't scheduled on the day of an autocross or other event is key.

EDIT: I just looked at my schedule, will be in Duluth racing RC cars that weekend. Maybe next year.

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

I know its a full on mitsu event, but something to get better numbers would be to have a small section called "others" and allow other nice cars to be shown, and not just parked in back. just a thought. i know a lot of ex mitsu owners would like to go and show what they drive now

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

^^ I like that idea alot. :) haha

An ex dsmer section lol

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

It's the all mitsu cookout. Not all mitsus plus whatever else you drove. And there is an "other" section, but it's for strange mitsus. I think one day is fine, there are tons of dyno days for various car clubs. But I think there should be more activities. The slow drag was awesome, maybe you could rent some of those sumo wrestling suits and have a little arena setup on the lawn there. Something for when you want to take a break from walking the lot. I vote one day.

I'm up for the cookout. I havent been to one, but i will attend. IMO, i'd like the cookout/dyno day in one day. doesnt have to be a dyno, it could be something else. I just like eating, chatting and just to chill and look at other mitsu owners out there.

i got no problem with dyno early in the day gives us something to talk about at the show

I think this event should be in September so I can go. kekeke.

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

Summer is very busy and I wish I could do two days but I vote 1, but pack a bit more into it. 5 hours would go quick with even 1 or 2 more additions during the time frame. I would like to see some additional activities going on during the show hours.

Like the slow drags or easy and fun to participate or watch challenges.

Maybe some mitsu specific classes/demonstrations by one of the area experts on tuning or modifications. Anything where I can see and learn things would be a great add on for me.

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

I vote one day. I agree that there are enough dyno days for the summer. Seems like every club has one, why does the Cookout need one? As for the swap meet, why not just have that at the cookout as well?

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

I have probably been to the last 4? cookouts and each one has been great. (Thanks Curt for always doing a great job!)

I like the idea of the 1 day thing, I don't think a dyno day is needed, I think 11-4 is a fine amount, I think a swap meet there would be SWEET.

I am not a fan of inviting any non-mitus. MITSU cookout...

+1 on swap meet on the day of cookout

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

last year a few people just put their stuff for sale either next to or infront of their car. The problem with this i see is that it trashes up the "car show" who wants to take pics of cars that have car parts strewn in front

Aww man. Strange? I would have said "unique". :(

I vote for one day. The lenght seems a bit long, but thats just my opinion. After waiting all day in the hot sun, it starts to get to you. Maybe shorten it by one hour?

That's what she said. And strange is awesome because it's different. I think the swap meet is a good idea, but it should start at 3pm, so no parts infront of your car until 3pm, or whenever the voting is concluded.

I have been planning on going to the cookout but haven't made it to one yet. A suggestion could be to have vendors attend? Might be able to get some good deals from them and would have more for people to do. (this may already be happening?)

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

I vote just the cookout. It's summer time, and I know I have tons of plans, all the time, during the summer. Dedicating an entire weekend for me would just be too much.

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

1 day, car show style. Maybe setup a side where people can bring tables and do a swap meet over there, AWAY from the cars.

The dyno day may bring in more people, but it really makes for along weekend imho. I might try to get out the cookout this year, I've always had stuff going on the last few years the day of :(.

Why would someone wanna be away from the cars trying to sell stuff? It's nice to see a car and be able to talk to the owner a bit. I like with the parts for sale right by the car, it would make no sense at all to make it basically a car show and a separate swap meet over on the side, it would take some of the fun and socializing out of it.

Yeah except it is hard to see and judge a car when there is a table full of used crap in front of it.

FattyBoomBatty 05-25-2009 09:50 AM

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

Hence my idea that works for both of you, have the swap meet begin after the car show ends. Or maybe just not have an official selling/trading plan, but just let people do as they wish. If their car gets fewer points because of a pile of garbage sitting in front of it, so be it. All I know is I have a good chance at winning 1st place in the starquest catagory this year. :D

Chances are I won't even have a DSM by the time this rolls around, but I'll still be there regardless!

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

i agree with the point about plenty of other dyno days, but i enjoyed the cruise to the drive-in diner the day before the car show. make sure it is on a weekend that works for most. if some miss out cuz of other stuff then so be it. also, i understand that some people came to the show but didn't pay to show their cars, yea you suck whoever you are. curt works hard to get everything to run smoothly. so i think we gotta do something to make sure that doesn't happen again. oh btw bitches, MITSUS only!!

I wouldn't mind a mini cruise after the show on Sunday.

Even if I just drive into the lot, park, walk around and look at cars for 30 mins, and leave?

Our dyno is only a few blocks away from either of the usual Cookout sites, if you want to do anything the same day. I am not sure of a smooth way to handle it though.

Re: All Mitsu Cookout or a full weekend?

Just a little update....... I'm planning on having just the Cookout. I'm planning on doing it on Sunday, August 23rd from 11am to 4pm again. (the non-diehards can come late if its too long for them) ;)

There will be a couple of Saturday evening events for the out-of-towners. Probably dinner and a bonfire. But no dyno day. As far as the "swap meet" idea. You can sell stuff at the Cookout, but there will not be any advertised swap meet. As some people have noted, displaying used stuff in front of your car kind of distracts from the car show theme, and I have no desire to make a dedicated space for the swap meet.

I'll make an official thread about the All Mitsu Cookout soon. I need to finalize a few things first.

Thanks,
Curt

Curt I think you made some great choices. I understand the need for some events to keep the out of towners happy and incentive to come.
