Magnus Motorsports
Alright here is my story:
Ordered a magnus intake manifold about 3.5 weeks ago. Ordered it with 2 extra vacuum ports and a Q45 flange. I realize that that takes time so I waited. Took 3 Weeks to get here from the time of order to the time I got it. I first looked at it and I was excited. Until I looked closer, and this is what I found... Not polished front piece where the plenums are... http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00725.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00724.jpg Poor Machine Work on the magnus logo... http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00726.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00735.jpg Poor smoothing done on the intake flange... http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00732.jpg Not polished around the "donut" http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00736.jpg AND WORST OF ALL... http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00738.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/h...3/DSC00737.jpg THE DAMN THING ISNT EVEN WELDED! I realize that some of that stuff is just me being super picky. but when you pay that much for a BRAND NEW manifold I expect a great product. I contacted them last wednesday night and he contacted me back thursday morning asking for my contact number because he wants to work this out. I emailed him right back and gave him my number and the times I am available. 6 days later, no call at all. I emailed him again and no response. I didnt want to do this but I after 6 days of no call and 2 unanswered emails Im kinda pissed. Thats my story. I will keep you updated as I get this worked out. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
whoa sucky, hope you get it worked out with them.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
VENOM Intake manifold FTW! That sucks man. I guess you can't say you get what you pay for on this one. Was never a fan of them especially after the test results here on Mitsustyle.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
Holy crap that sucks.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I can weld that no problem, $20 and about 20 min...
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
looks expensive but they dont have very good quality control cause if they did it would have gotten caught by them. Sorry to hear about that!
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I wouldnt put up with that. I'd send it back and have it finished the way it was supposed to be done. For how much magnus charges, you should recieve a product worth the price.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
A little JB Weld will fix it. :)
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I wonder if they have an issue with there welding staff, or the lack there of. The manifold looks rushed and was not looked over before shipment. And Shane is a JB weld master.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
you SHOULD return it for a refund and get a manifold that has good costumer service, price, and performance.......cough jmf cough
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
That does blow. When you spend top dollar you should in return receive a top dollar product.
Forgetting an entire weld is pretty bad. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
They probably didn't finish it because the guy got swine flu.

I dont even know what to do, I really want this manifold, but do I return it and order a new one or have them fix it? And Im pissed I havent even gotten an email back, WTF! |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I have had similar issues with mine, it is currently back at Magnus right now being rewelded (I hope). The #4 runner was split on 3 of the 4 sides where the runner meets the flange, and has never seen more than 19psi or supporting anymore weight than just itself.
Also last fall my Magnus throttle body broke. The shaft that holds the plate snapped in half where one of the bolts were and sent the bolt down 2 of cylinders in 2 pieces obviously. When I called them to see if they would at least warranty the shaft (not to mention that my engine now needed to be rebuilt) they examined the very detailed pics I took of the damage and then wouldnt call or email me back after several attempts. I wish I wouldve spent the few extra dollars and bought the AMS. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
My experience with an intake seems to be on par now. I picked up a parts car with Magnus intake mani on it. Pulled the motor swapped it into my 2g and everything seemed good. Did a boost leak test prior to start up and heard some air escaping. Sure enough, it was a crack around the welds on the #4 runner. Did I mention I had the intake freshly powdercoated... so sand it down and have it welded up. Should work fine now.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I'm pretty sure they never polish the side of the plenum that meets with the runners. Mine isn't polished there. That's just inexcusable that they missed an entire weld like that though. Good luck on getting it sorted out.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I got a call from them today. They said they are finishing up a new one for me and it should be out today! Now I am happy. I gotta send the old one back asap. And I realize that mistakes happen up was mainly upset about them not contacting me.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
Damn,
The missing weld? Cmon.. I had one a few years ago and it cracked 3 times on me. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
Glad to hear they are getting it taken care of for you.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
You're not the only one. My Magnus wasn't missing welds but the welds had 3 pinhole sized air leaks. Their QC sucks! Don't know why they don't pressure test these. I didn't even bother calling them, I just had my brother welds it up. I will never do business with them again in fear of receiving worse the 2nd time around.
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I had the majority of the same things with mine, except for the non welding. But other then that you dont see the bottom that much. espeically if you get their Magnus Fuel rail like i did.
The magnus motorsports logo isnt machined, its stamped. so obviously its not going to look machined. Oh well, as long as it works you will be fine. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
Thought I'd revive this thread. I was up in Duluth driving to my cousins wedding in Virginia, rolled into it in 4th gear and heard a loud pop. From then the car wouldnt idle. Pulled over thinking I had a blown off a pipe or something like that. I didnt see anything wrong so I started pulling plugs when I noticed the intake mani.... No pictures yet but, there is a 4" crack along the weld on right above the runners. Needless to say I had to rig it(tape, bubble gum, some paper, and a shoe string) to make it back to Duluth and now I have some JB Weld on it so hopefully I will make it back to St Cloud to get it fixed up properly. Yea for magnus!!

Re: Magnus Motorsports
One good thing is they do offer warrenty on that stuff. BUT good luck getting it to them. I didnt know how hard it was to ship to canada until I had to deal with this.

Re: Magnus Motorsports
We need some pics man! and pics of the temporary fix also

not quite as epic as some but, either way its a pos. Sorry, no pics of the really stupid Macgyver'd roadside fix.
The JB weld bandaid. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1253490380 what lies below http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1253490380 |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
ghey. Time for a venom!
|
Re: Magnus Motorsports
Does nobody remember all the garbage 1_Vicious_GSX went through with Magnus a few years ago? That in itself shows that regardless of their accomplishments, Magnus Motorsports is a poorly run business.

Re: Magnus Motorsports
Bring this back from the dead...
Ordered a RWD magnus for another car and I am less then amused by the quality of this one. #1- 4 Months to get #2- Center punch divots on the top side of the manifold (where they would have drilled for a regular mangus for the vacuum ports) #3- Plate where the vacuum ports are is not even tapped #4- Seems as tho the runners are not centered properly. looks as they filled with the welder a bit #5- Nit pick but the magnus logo is milled on the top and bottom. they really couldn't make a different plenum for the RWD or machine it later. I am calling tomorrow to talk to them. But as of right now I will never purchase another magnus manifold again nor will I recommend it to anyone. |

JMF FTW!! I love mine!

What is this, SBR 2.0?

Re: Magnus Motorsports
That guy Greg, who did the intake flow testing, said he had a nice SMIM design and made, but was just looking for a local company to sell them...
Looks very nice. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
Just got off the phone with Sean at Magnus, great guy to deal with. Very helpful and took full responsibility for the product they sent. everything is being worked out.
This thread was never meant to totally flame Magnus. They are a great company and make a great product. I understand that the amount they produce there are going to be mistakes. And maybe if I wasn't such a hard customer and have one off parts made it would have been better. Anyways They are dealing with the problem and I am once again a satisfied customer! |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
Until next time...again?

The magnus that I bought was fine, i believe some of them crack by the #4 tube because of its proximity to the TB and the intercooling pipes.
Most people don't think about the stresses that the intake manifold experiences from the engine shaking and especially how bad it is if the intercooling piping is setup so there isnt room to flex. Just look at the stock manifold, it has a steel brackets, one on the top and one on the bottom...I have always removed both with no ill effects, but still, mitsubisihi engineers knew that the intake manifold was one of those parts that needed to be over-designed. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
As Jakey noted earlier in this thread, I had my problems with Magnus, and I gave them a fair thread about it, as some of the issues were not all their fault, although most were. But what did go wrong on Magnus's end never should have happened.
Not that I'm trying to defend Magnus on this, but there are two different issues in this thread. 1. The out of the box problems are very disappointing, especially for the money these intakes cost. Never should happen that way and just a visual inspection before boxing it up would/should have caught it. I don't think they pressure test each one and I can't think of anybody else that does either. But that doesn't mean others don't, I just don't know of them. Either way, Magnus dropped the ball on this one. 2. On a SMIM, there is a constant flexing of the metal that over time can crack a weld. Boost somewhat "balloons" them up a little and vacuum pulls them inward. This is a problem when using flat sheeting in this type of application. If the plenum were a completely round tube, the stresses would be distributed evenly. Welds are by nature meant to handle straight pulling forces, but when flat sheets are welded at 45 deg, 90 deg or 120 deg angles, and those flat sheets flex due to boost/vacuum, this causing flexing at the weld, which over time will fail. So over time a weld will crack and/or blow under boost. It's just the nature of using sheet metal. The bigger the areas of the sheet metal, the more flexing there is. That's why they seem to crack closer to the #3 & #4 runner. If you want to avoid it completely, go with a cast piece. Downside to a cast piece is extra weight. |
Re: Magnus Motorsports
I know cast intercooler end-tanks weigh less than their welded sheet metal counterparts. Not so with intake manifolds?

Re: Magnus Motorsports
someone should make a Carbon Fiber intake manifold, that would be tight.
edit: The honda guys have them looks like a really sweet peice. http://www.advancedinductionresearch.com/ |
