Spaz's Electrical Issues
The problem that was concerning just mysteriously appeared today, then just as mysteriously disappeared after making that post.
So I don't really trust it right now. And I will be damned if I go on this cruise with a chance of my car saying "Screw you, I'm gonna drain your battery completely when you try to start me." If it doesn't do it again, I'll consider it good. Once is admissible, twice makes it a problem. I'll clean my battery terminals for good luck, though. New PS pump is in, system needs to be bled more because it's still making a racket, but it works and doesn't leak (beyond the first start when I forgot to install the stem o-rings :jackoff: ). |
Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
How about a new battery and alternator? Have you gotten either/both tested yet?
|
Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
Alternator tested at 100% with the tester my dad's got. Battery tested fine.
As I said on Friday (I think I said it at Uni) the alternator function was intermittent, so I wasn't sure if it was bad. Could be that there's so much ATF on it from the pump that it just couldn't work. I'll probably take a hose to it tonight or tomorrow and see if that helps, or maybe a car wash... |
Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
Why not just bring it in somewhere to like an Autozone. I thought they will test Alternators and Batteries for free.

Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
if the p.s. pump was leaking all over it. just replace it it is dieing
|
Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
If I'm replacing it, I need to take a hose to it anyway. I don't think they'll warranty it on parts if it's covered in ATF.
And it tests fine, it just stops working randomly for random lengths of time. |
Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
do it. get a new battery while you're in there. If nothing else, keep it in your trunk or back seat so when your battery does die you can swap it out then and limp somewhere safe ;)
|
Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
When your dad tested it, did he load it? I'm pretty sure that when a shop/store tests it, they load it down heavily because that's when an intermittently failing Alternator will really show if it's dieing.
|
Re: MitsuStyle Spring 2009 Cruise - April 18-19, 2009!
bring it in to be tested. clean it out with brake clean. water will not do much for p.s. fluid. the best way to get a warranty is to clip a wire on the inside of the alt. that way it is just dead
|
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
If you replace the alternator, replace the battery at the same time. A bad alternator can wreck a battery, and a bad battery can wreck an alternator.
(posts moved from the cruise thread) |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Yay spaz's own thread!
+1 on what was said about loading it down; on Friday you showed me the battery was putting out 12v, but as soon as you cranked it it went to only 3. This means dead dead dead battery to me (which it was). How much voltage is on it when cranking on it now? |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Replace the alternator.
|
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Oh, and gap your friggin spark plugs!

Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Lights were on when the alternator was tested. It charged the battery just fine tonight when I refilled and bled the PS system. I'm going to have it all tested tomorrow, and hopefully get the misfire diagnosed as well.
|
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Wow. I say sell the car and get something reliable, like a conquest.
Oh, and I had an issue with my alternator in the truck. It wouldn't charge the battery. The battery was saveable, but the alternator was done for. A rebuild and 90 bucks later it runs frickin perfect. This is what I recommend you do. |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Turning the lights on isn't really enough load to determine if a battery is good or junk. You need a proper load tester for that. I say replace your alternator (and don't let PS fluid leak all over it this time) and replace your battery.

I'll be getting everything tested this afternoon, and will probably end up just replacing the alternator, sabotaging it if need be. :D |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Started it up, tested the alternator, came back at 100%. Drove it around, lights came on, took it back home, tested at 0%. Time for a new one.

Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Don't sell the car because of an alternator problem. Any car can have that problem.
Now if it crankwalks though... |

Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
theres the choice of a saturn alternator for a cheaper alternative? i woudlnt trust it though
|
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
I will eventually. I want to spend more time learning stuff on the Talon first, at the very least do the upcoming timing job. The Stang'll hit craigslist and probably a few other sites within the next month or so, but I probably won't be looking at selling the Talon until likely the end of this season. The whole shoutbox deal was me not being able to find the cars for sale section on EvoM, and people got inquisitive.
Now, back to my current issue... Alternator's out, I'm going to go see if they'll honor the warranty for it. However, when the PS fluid sprayed all over, my belts and pulleys ended up getting soaked. What's the best way to clean them? Soapy water work, or should I use a degreaser? |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
The saturn route is a decent amount of work to get it installed, probably not worth it. If you can't get a warranty one, someone probably has a used one in good condition for a lot cheaper, or hit up u-pull, they usually have some 2gs.
Don't use too harsh of a degreaser, probably not good for the rubber. Dishsoap usually works really well for me. Or just let them squeal. :D |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Thanks. I can feel the PS belt slipping when I go lock to lock quickly, so I'd prefer to get that resolved.
As for non-stock alternators, I'm using a 97 Galant ES alternator (rated 10A higher), and so that's what I'll be getting again (hopefully) under warranty. |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Engine degreaser. Why not just buy a new alternator for a hundred bucks and be done with it?

My turbo oil feed line broke and got oil all over my alternator and fried it that way. Bring it in and have it tested. |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Did I mention you should replace the battery while you're at it? We're going on a 400 mile cruise this weekend....there's no dealership or checker for a loooooong ways where we're goin! No cell service either ;)
there *is* an o'reily in Alexandria though, we spotted that one special for ya ;) |

Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Fuckers didn't warranty my alternator because it tested fine on their machine (like their machine knows all). Doesn't test fine on my machine, and my dad "isn't okay" with clipping a wire to make it test bad. Battery tested fine, but we knew that, it's run my car for the last god knows how many miles.
So I'm supposed put the alternator back in the car, get everything charged, then drive to O'Reilly's and hope to god it gets me there, then leave it running until someone can come look at it, and hope it doesn't die while I'm waiting, then charge it back up and drive it home, hopefully with a new alternator in hand. I have no desire to put a bad alternator back in to prove that it's bad just to take it out again. I'm sick of this bullshit, I want a working fucking alternator :madashell: Any way for me to test the wires with the alternator out of the car? That's really the only thing left. |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Best way to get ATF off the belts? Get new belts. They aren't that expensive.
|
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
all I have to say is my bro is the man. he is going to warrenty the alt for spaz tomorrow.
buy a batt, plugs, and new belts the oil in them will make them fail fast |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
I can give you a number of a guy that will rebuild the alternator, he's really good and less expensive than buying a new one, even with a core exchange usually. Rick Brutger of Auto Electric Specialists, Inc. 952-939-9373.
It's off Plymouth road in minnetonka. |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Thanks for the offer Andrew, but I need this ASAP. Just getting a new one, for free, is easier.
And Craig, if you see this, it's a 97 Galant ES alternator. But at this point, anything that'll bolt on and work is fine with me. |
Re: Spaz's Electrical Issues
Don't forget new belts, a battery, and new spark plugs!
