Project Black Talon
1st Gen Talons have to be my favorite DSM's, epecially black. I got lucky and found one last summer from a guy in Iowa. He trailered it here and sold it ot me for 650$ with no motor or tranny. I finally decided its time for my 1990 Eclipse to go, its rusting, blew fourth gear in the tranny to the high heavens, and the motor only ad 90 psi across the board. Still made 380 hp and 400 lbs of torque at MAP with an Evo III 16g :). Anywho heres the talon..

Had the machine work done to it by John Gosh, great guy to work with, does great work, and is very helpful. I am installing 8.8:1 Wiseco pistons, Eagle rods and ACL tri-metal bearings. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/IMG00053.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/IMG00055.jpg I installed the pistons and rods today. The wrist pin seemed kinda tight on the connecting rod bushing with the very first piston/rod I put together. It would slide back and fourth on the wrist pin, but seemed kinda tight. Im not gonna worry about it. |
Re: Project Black Talon
Nice, was it just no motor? Tranny and everything still in it? If so that's a steal for $650. I'm a 1g nut myself, what set-up are ya putting on the 2.4?
|
Re: Project Black Talon
The talon came with no motor or tranny. Just starting off with an Evo III 16g, 1850cc injectors, E85 , BC 280's and lots of boost. Then upgrading to a Holset 6 blade Hx40 :sport017:
|
Re: Project Black Talon
Wow, that's a hell of a clean car for $650! What a steal! Was it all stock, or was there anything done to it?
|
Re: Project Black Talon
Heck ya, nice deal.
I would of went with higher compression if you are going to use E85. Sounds like a beast keep us updated. |
Re: Project Black Talon
Holsets are for losers lol. Sounds like a fun build, but why bother with the 16g on the 2.4L
|
Re: Project Black Talon
To get things rolling sleepydsm , thats all.
The highest compression pistons Wiseco offered was 8.8:1 for an 87mm motor, unless of course I called them and special ordered a set. The car pretty much stock except the ABS was eliminated (I would have done the same), and had a walbro 255hp in the tank. It didnt come with the rims or tires shown in the pic but came with stock rims and tires. The tires looked almost brand new though! http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...4162008167.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...4162008168.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...4162008169.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...4162008170.jpg |
Re: Project Black Talon
Lookin pretty good!
|
Re: Project Black Talon
Looks awesome. I didn't know about the wisecos i roll stock bottom end cause I don't make much power.
|
Re: Project Black Talon
Looks great, and that's a steal for what you payed. You're gonna have me looking for deals the next couple weeks.
|
Re: Project Black Talon
I was debating whether to remove my power steering or not. Than I though why not run an aftermarket P/S pump with a built in reservoir where the a/c compressor used to be. Anybody have any input/ideas on this?
|
Re: Project Black Talon
If you're daily driving the car, or if you do alot of 90* parking and slow turns, I wouldn't suggest removing the power steering. I took it out of my car, and sometimes I wish I still had it.
|
Re: Project Black Talon
power steering is a must unless your feeling strong everytime you drive the car. its a very clean car for what you paid for it! Those are some HUGE injectors. I guess that goes with the saying GO BIG OR GO HOME.. What kind of power are you looking to get...

Re: Project Black Talon
I am just fine without my PS, and I have a welded center diff too..

If anyone else wants help degreeing there cams....... Kiss my :aikido:, it was a pain and I never want to do it again, lol. I had to advance the exhaust 2.5 degrees and retard the intake about 6 degrees. |
Re: Project Black Talon
Damn, isn't 6* like a whole tooth? That's a lot less overlap.
|
Re: Project Black Talon
I think it ended up that way because I degreed a 2.4 with a DOHC head
|

Re: Project Black Talon
Well a few days ago I started to hear ticking coming from my motor. Sounded like a lifter tick but gradually got worse. Pulled the valve cover and ran and the noise was not louder with the valve cover off and I knew there was a serious problem. Drained my oil and found gold shavings!
Now I pulled my oil pan and found the bushing from number one hanging out of the connecting rod. Now im like WTF! with only 7500 on this motor. After I found that out, I removed the head to find the wrist pin actually snapped in half and was chewing up the bushing on the connecting rod. Then looking back at this thread, realised this is the same wrist pin that was too tight! What im doing now is still in the air, this should not have happened. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/IMG00162.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/IMG00163.jpg |
Re: Project Black Talon
Definatly not a year for Blake 1gbs, which it's just you and me buddy. Change your sig.
|
Re: Project Black Talon
I remember having some problems with my Weisco's as well. I think I had Gosh rebush them if I'm not mistaken. That really sucks, quality control is definitely lacking.
|
Re: Project Black Talon
Well a Wiseco represenative states at my wicked 500hp level HD's are required. I bet the stockers would be still holding :rollinglaugh:
|
Re: Project Black Talon
Poor guy.
|
Re: Project Black Talon
He did offer me a discount to cope with the situation. If I do and when I do, I will have to check over there tolerances, which is kinda sad one would have to.
