I got my new license plates in the mail the other day, and I got to thinking that the front of my sweet ass ride would look a little cleaner w/o a big ugly license plate there.
My mom bitched for about 45 minutes about how it is wrong to break the law expecially when you know you are doing it, and all sorts of other shit. I told her I had a cover on my license plates (also illegal) and I have had them on for 2 years, no problems, her response "you just got lucky" So has anyone here had any problems with not having a fornt plate on?? I know a few people that haven't had any problems, but they drive a buick and a grand am, so the cops probably aren't watching them too hard anyway. |
I once had a cop try to pull me over for it, and that's all I'll say about that. ;)
Other than that I have had no problems in over a year. And I should note that it was a Burnsville cop that was going to pull me over. |
LOL ive gotten tickets for that, but since i put it in the window ive had no problems

where should you put your license plate if you have a frount mount? i thought you only put it in your window if you are in a different state? i dont know
|
As long as it is in your front window i believe its legal.
|
i got pulled over many times some they just tacked it on to be an ass and some they just pulled me for that.
|
I got pulled over for just that reason a week ago. Some jackass cop had pulled someone over on the side of the road. The person was leaving as I drove by. 1 minute later, the cop that pulled the other person over pulled me over for no front plate. I told him that my car never had a front plate on and that I haven't had time to do it since I just got new plates a month ago and am busy. He went to his car and came back with a $100 ticket. Fuck da police.
|
I've seen some people zip-tie them to the passenger side sun visor :stick:

Oh well, fuck it, Im gonna just zip tie it into my grill area, no fmic on the honda so it ain't no thing, I just dont wanna have to take off my damn bumper to bolt it up again (ghetto license plate bolting system, don't ask) |
i go a ticket on university last summer for no front plate. i had it in the front window but the cop was being a dick. there not cheap around $80, i think
|
I have been pulled over for no plate 3 times (only thing I was pulled over for). In Hopkins, I was pulled over in my talon on HWY 7. He gave me a warning.
I was pulled over in the integra in Minnetonka for no front plate and given a $130 ticket. I was pulled over in my talon again in St. Louis Park and given a warning. The Cops in Hopkins check. James has been pulled over twice in Hopkins and I have once in Hopkins and another time in Minnetonka. So far the "in the window" excuse has not worked for us. I leave it in the front seat and say it must have fallen or throw it up when I can. Doesn't help (in my experiences). Just put the fucker back on. Especially if you ever want to drive down to Uni. They look for any excuse to pull you over. James recieved 7 tickets in two months down there last year. He was able to get out of 6. |
I have an idea for all you guys getting pulled over for no plate. Put the plate back on! I have mine on there and I wont get rid of it. I do have a clear cover on it which is illegal but never have gotten pulled over for it.
I think a nice condition front plate mounted nicley like stock looks alot better than a ghetto window mod. Im not taking it off to pay 100+ dollars. Thats good mod money. |
I haven't had one on since 1999, I've never gotten pulled over.
|
I need to have my front plate in place in order to cover-up the big dent in the bumper, lol!
|
Maybe i should put mine on the srt eh?
|
unless it is mounted in the front of the car, its illegal. This means any windshield, visor, or other mounting system is illegal.
Also, clear/smoke covers are illegal. I have mine on the front. I had it on before the deer accident, and I scored a new bracket for free because of it (go go zip ties). Especially where the shop is, no need to get pulled over more often than I do. Plus if you are worried about something stupid like the front plate 'slowing you down' you really need to make some power :). I agree they don't look good on the front, but rules are rules. |
IN Owatonna that is a big thing that "tuners" and 'ricers' alike get pulled over for... As far as cooling, as long as it isnt zip tied to your front mount etc, it shouldt effect it.
|
Josh is right....the windshield mounting is still illegal, and from what I have heard you actually have a better chance of getting pulled over with it there. Cop sees a car w/o a front license plate he probably won't even notice unless he is specifically searching for a car w/o the plate.....but if he looks at a car and sees it in the front windshield it will flag his attention immediately. I have been given fix-it tickets for no front plate, but never an actual ticket.
|
I didn't have one for a long time after my car got hit when I first got it back from the shop. I didn't want to fuck up the nice new bumper but then I got stopped for it twice in one day so I put it back on. Its just something to give them a reason to stop you. If you are driving to work in the morning or around during the day you are usually ok, but cruising at night or after the bar is not safe. Just depends on how much of a prick the cop is. Usually if they stop you for that they are looking for more than a front license plate ticket to give.
CRAIG |
Anything that obstructs any part of the view thru the windshield is considered illegal. Even if it's down in the corner. If you have anything hanging from the mirror, it is illegal. Basically you have to have a completely unobstructed view thru your windshield. My advice, put it on the bumper where it's supposed to be or move to another state that doesn't require a front plate.
On a side note, in high school (1991), I got pulled over in my 73 Plymouth Valiant because the cop in St. Cloud thought I had no front plate. It turned out I had so much dust and dirt on it you couldn't see it. Now tell me that an old forest green rusty valiant is a car that catches the eye of an officer as a "fast car"..... |
As I was pulled over 8 times in 1 month for no front plate. Ya I can tell you most anything you want to know about this.
first off to let you know I drove 1.5 years with out one. And not a single incident. Then out of no where I got 8 in one month. secondly after getting busted at Opus a police officer gave me the run down on the law for it. It has to be bolted to your front bump and no where else (ie: it's illegal to put up in your windshield) it also can not be zip tied to the front bumper (which is what I did with mine) But I can say this for you. I also found a loop hole. Normally this is a fix it ticket. meaning that you fix it and then go to the coart house and show someone, etc. and it's dropped. Well even if the cop gives you an Official ticket and not a Fix it ticket. Just go to coart wth the plate mounted on your bumper. And play stupid. Be like I was told I had to show someone, etc. The judge being busy will drop the ticket. 7 out of 8 tickets I got tropped. The first one I didn't know was a fix it ticket so I just paid the fine over the phone. ps: I still don't run a front plate and I live right across from a police Station and I think for the most part cops will not pull you over for it. But they'll give you a ticket if your doing something else. (ie: pull you over for something else, but then just to compound the fines he'll right that up as well, especially if your down at Red Rock or Opus, or somewhere else where racing is going on) |
i think that some people just have more money to waste than others.... i've never had a problem with the look of my cars with the front plate.... weird!
|
I just don't like Front plates. But that could be becuase I grew up in NY and they don't require them in that state.
|
Front plates are really ugly on DSM's, they did not incorporate them at all into the design of the car. Very ugly on EVO's too....just look tacked on and out of place.
|
In ND it's the law to have a front plate. The front window mounting won't cut it. The cops in town don't even look at you but the Hi-po's are asses near WIlliston, ND. I'm moving to FL where ther is no front plate law.
Think about this: Imagine how much money the state would save just issuing people 1 plate for the rear of their car? Now that's astronomical! Well, the boys in the state pen wouldn't have enough to do if they did that. |
Think how much money they'd lose not being able to issue no front plate tickets :)
|
HA good point my man!!
|
If they only issued one plate, they would only charge you $3.50 instead of the $7. They would miss out on that extra plate fee.
Just so you know, every 7 years (I believe) you have to get new plates. It is automatic and you will see an extra charge for it. So the state would not save money, but lose money, if they only issued one plate to each person. |
Front plates are hideous! Whether ur front is made for them or not...looks just terrible, period. I've had mine off for two years, in the bottom/middle of windshield and only been told to fix it once. It's kind of a luck of the draw type thing, my day will come and after it does, the plate will come right off again. Did I mention its UGLY???
|
a front plate on a vehicle in minnesota is not required anymore there is no law saying u have to have a front but there is a law about having the rear plate on

Subd. 6. Other motor vehicles. If the motor vehicle is any kind of motor vehicle other than those provided for in subdivisions 2 to 4 (semitrailer, small trailer, collector's vehicle, truck-tractor, road-tractor, or farm truck,) one plate must be displayed on the front and one on the rear of the vehicle. Subd. 7. Plate fastened and visible. All plates must be securely fastened so as to prevent them from swinging. The person driving the motor vehicle shall keep the plate legible and unobstructed and free from grease, dust, or other blurring material so that the lettering is plainly visible at all times. It is unlawful to cover any assigned letters and numbers or the name of the state of origin of a license plate with any material whatever, including any clear or colorless material that affects the plate's visibility or reflectivity. |
I have never heard of it getting changed. I doubt the cops with their laser radar would let that get changed. That is their main target.
|
The info I quoted was from the 2003 legislative books. There has been no revision to that law since 1997.
|
tee-hee. I ahve a front palte but it moves out of the way when I accelerate so it can stil get air to the intercooler.
|
Going JDM-drifto hinged plate style, Tyler?
